Gotland island, strategic location in Baltic Sea, remilitarises as Sweden joins NATO • FRANCE 24

Sweden joined NATO earlier this month, becoming the 32nd member of the military alliance. Around the Baltic Sea, nations are worried about what Russian President Vladimir Putin could do next after he showed he was capable of invading neighbour Ukraine. Sweden has officially put an end to its traditional neutrality and its prime minister has even told his people they need to be prepared for war. Military service was already reintroduced back in 2018. Our reporters Clovis Casali and Julien Sauvaget went to the Swedish island of Gotland, deemed the most strategic location in the Baltic Sea.

And there is nothing and nobody there along the route, really. Ships that leave China/SE Asia go past Singapore, India, Middle-east and the med where they can deliver and pick up goods. Not so in Siberia.

Because the politicians had sold out to the US before then and started to prepare for the American war against Russia by then. For example, they formed the new "espionage" law that puts journalists and whistleblowers in prison for up to 8 years if they tell the truth about war crimes committed by Sweden's "partners". They did this to protect the US, to make them untouchable by law and media. It's all a plan, the US has been planning this war for decades, and the Nordic countries will be annihilated because of it. The Swedish politicians have been bought and are sacrificing their country and people for the USA's megalomania. The US will fake an attack in the Nordic countries and blame it on Russia, so they can attack Russia from Nordic territory. RIP Nordic countries. All for the USA's insatiable greed and hunger for world domination...

@@_loss_ Frankly, I don't see a problem with either scenario, i.e. Åland swapping autonomy for independence or joining Sweden. From a Finnish perspective, Åland has always been the odd one out, demilitarized and detached from the mainland -- literally, figuratively, linguistically, culturally and whatnot. When Finland gained independence, Åland had to join Finland because influential Swedish-speakers in Finland wanted to see more of their kind -- and this against the islanders' express wishes. Anyhoo, the point here is that the Ålanders actively take part in defending their homeland instead of outsourcing their defence to the Finns -- or, for that matter, the Swedes.

Nukes would make them a target for nukes from Russia. Also, Swedes and Finns were reluctant to become part of NATO for a variety of reasons. One is as a NATO member your responsible to respond to attacks on other far flung NATO countries. After 9-11 NATO countries responded and helped the US in Afghanistan. Their citizens died there. American's don't even show appreciation. You don't have to lecture Sweden, or Finland, on preparedness. As a society Finland is better prepared than Americans. Sweden is not close behind. They have centuries of dealing with Russia and maintaining their freedom. I'm happy they are both part of NATO now.

200 conscripts at the regiment... that is, there are professionals on the Island(with e.g Leopard 2 and CV90)+200 conscripts next year. First responders in case of a surprise attack would likely be Home Guard units though, international media seems to think this is a reserve force, it's not, it's local defense forces, 40 Battalions of what one could call light infantry across the country, made up of volunteers(former pros and/or conscripts), and Gotland got theirs as well. The Home Guard could use a bit more capabilities though, e.g now they got assault rifles and support weapons, e.g Carl Gustaf, FN MAG(GPMG), sniper rifles, 120 mm Mortars, AT4, NLAW, they are getting new drones now which is a start(only for recce though, Parrot ANAFI USA GOV), but they still lack air defense, to take one obvious thing, should have e.g RBS 70 available in The Home Guard, but thats just my opinion.

Most of the Swedish peace activists have historically and still to this day been far left, many of them supported the Soviet Union's militaristic dictatorship while at the same time arguing for Sweden to demilitarize. In that light it is very clear (although this is still speculation on my part) why the old lady in the clip changed her mind after Ukraine, she probably was and still is very far left and when the great threat was the Soviet Union she wanted Sweden to get taken over by the communists. However now when Russia no longer is a communist nation she changed her mind. She always knew peace worship leads to subjugation but back then it brought her closer to her ideological goal while now it will bring her further away. That is a teleological fallacy that might seem well-meaning and accidental but is rather more nefarious and intentional. In her individual case I might be be wrong ofc but looking at the broader peace movement in Sweden and also in the West in general this is a pretty common occurrence, a definitive pattern that is quite revealing.

5:32 "I don't want my kids to become NATO soldiers". Neither do we Americans, nor do the British, The Polish, and I'm sure the people fighting to defend and restore Ukraine whole don't want to be soldiers either. The problem with selfish and naive people like this father is if you aren't willing to fight to defend what's yours someone will take it from you. It's not that to must fight, it's that you must be ready to fight. The weaker the target the more risk you invite to your home, your children, and your nation. Sweden has been made safer by joining the NATO alliance. Russia is looking for neighbors to conquer. So my question is, would you rather your son be READY to fight for his homeland, or would you rather you all be enslaved and wiped out by the genocidal Russian regime. All across eastern and central europe the USSR induced famines to starve out the non-russian ethnic groups, all the while moving their Russians in. Sweden has been lucky to avoid the same fate so it seems some naive people in Sweden think they're safer then countries like Ukraine going it alone. That is foolishness.

The problem is that the whole narrative about the possible attack is fictional. Nobody is going to attack the mentioned father (only local gangs could possibly do that, I guess). The only winners in this hyped story are the military complex and its private contractors who will make some additional billions.

Oh I didn't know they will enslave everyone - that's very insightful. I guess I'd rather fight for my homeland and probably die 😂 but better than being a slave lmao 😂 hahaha let's go glhf

Because most Swedes are ethnic Swedes. But when I served in the Norwegian army as a conscript, we had several immigrant soldiers in our platoon. But origin from some nations can be an issue, as the military won't give them security clearance, even if they really want to serve.

Yugoslavia - Dictattorship oppressing multiple of the peoples of its nation, kind of like Austria Hungary. the very thing they swore to destroy. Libya, dictatorship donating weapons and money to terrorist organizations. Syria was to fight off ISIS mainly, but also to stop the dictatorship. Iraq, dictatorship.

I believe that the suggestion that Sweden become a N.A.T.O member nation is a very bad idea. Sweden is bigger than what most maps show and that Sweden shares a frontier with Russia. I would veto any measure to accept Sweden as a N.A.T.O member. History speaks to us all that any military incursion by Russia and Sweden into one anothers land has always ended badly for both Russia and Sweden but that is where that bloodshed began and ended; such military conflict did not in the past compel others, N.A.T.O members, to join in and worsen, expand, that violence into an uncontained nightmare. Sweden not being a N.A.T.O member has been an excuse for many within Russia not to placate the instigators within Russia whom want conflict, those whom want a return to overt authoritarianism. My Regards Mr. Dominic James Austin. P.S. It is nice to know that there remain such pretty girls within Sweden.
