Back when I had a bit more energy, and a particularly crazy friend and fellow chess enthusiast, I invented a variant of this where you had to do 20 (or 10, if you're lazy) pushups (or sit-ups) before you took any piece. The fun part of this variant is you could force your opponent to do a lot of pushups by trading down into an endgame- of course at the expense of you yourself doing the same number of pushups. A different variant is you have to do a certain number of pushups for each piece you either capture or move (whichever you choose), with the number depending on their traditional "point" value- which you could multiply by some integral value to increase difficulty: pawn = 1*N pushups, Bishop/Knight = 3*N pushups and so on. Finally, there was the variant that that same friend of mine and I spontaneously invented at an outdoor "full size" chessboard in Zurich Switzerland, which happened to be next to a 50m tall pedestrian tower with a spiral staircase that led up to a viewing platform. Here's how it worked: One made a move and then sprinted to the tower and moved a spare piece up to the next step up, then sprinted back to the board. When you got back, your opponent had to instantly make a move and then they sprinted off to the tower to move the piece one higher step. Each move made the player sprint higher and higher up the tower. You could take as much time as you wanted, but this gave your opponent more time to think. A single game was a great workout. In case you're curious, the exact location of this insanity took place here: 47.414755 N, 8.538398 E

Alternative to 60 push ups is each time you lose a piece, you have to do the same number of an exercise as that piece is worth, ie lose a pawn, 1 push up, queen means 9. you can only play your move after the exercise set is completed

I've always had an idea for a variant of chess called "Disguised King", Basically normal chess but a random piece will be the piece you have to checkmate, and the selected piece will act like a king. It will be random on a chess site but on a board you can either agree on which piece the "king" will be or you can just let someone else choose it. To identify which piece is the "king", one of the players must try to use the selected piece, which then would be told that that is the "king", both players will then know which piece is the "king" (Yes, the king can be selected as the piece you have to checkmate) If there is a piece chosen but the selected piece has 2 clones, (eg: knight, rook, bishop, pawn) then you have to checkmate ONE of the knight, rook, bishop or pawn (If there is a flaw or a suggestion pls reply)

Theres an interesting level of stratagy here, do you do pushups when your move is obvious, so you can blitz it out right after? or do you try to think about the position while doing pushups? I think for high level players that can easily keep a postion in thier head its obvious, but what about less experienced players?

I'm going to make a complete guess. In obvious terms, he's trying to attack the rook or maybe a pawn break. But honestly I think he's trying to "scare" the opponent. Crazy moves like that can cause people to overthink and make bad moves out of it. Especially when people do not have a decent amount of time on the clock. This isn't a bad strategy, but it's also not a good one. I'm not 100% sure although.
