Gotham FC's Midge Purce reflects on NWSL Championship win | SPECTRUM NEWS NY1

November 14, 2023
For the first time in its history, the New York women’s soccer team Gotham FC won the National Women's Soccer League championship.
Gotham FC secured the league title Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over Seattle's OL Reign in a fiercely contested final.
Gotham FC forward Midge Purce was named the most valuable player of the match. She assisted on both of Gotham FC's goals in the final.
“At first, it was this huge shock,” Purce said during an appearance on “Mornings On 1” Tuesday. “We all believed we could do it, but to actually do it... it hits you. You can't believe it.”
The win marks a major turnaround for Gotham FC, which finished at the bottom of the league in the 2022 season.
“We had a lot of changes. We had a lot of reform within our club, within our team, and within our coaching staff. And it paid off,” Purce said.
Purce looks to the NWSL championship as a sign that fans are tuning into women's soccer on the domestic level.
“It's been a long time coming, and I think this championship with the highest fan count, with the highest viewership, I think this is a big note of what's to come,” she said.
