Thanks Eileen - yep - Paisen along with some others do pretty major works on promos on Amazon and Insta - I try to check out as many such brands as I can, but can't do them all - it's like a tidal wave. This isn't a good one though!

I had a soprano Ovation about 17 years ago with the same sound hole decoration. It was Asian, but had a red, solid spruce top with their iconic plastic bowl and a pickup. It sounded good, a lot like a Flea. Someone else liked it too because it was actually stolen. Hope it went to a good home and ignited a passion for music.

They were well regarded as I recall. What's sad now is... if they chose to push them, they wouldn't stand a chance as people would think they were copies of stuff like this one...

  • @PTRarch

I still have mine, must be what, 12 to 15 years - so soon I can call it vintage. I have the black one, and it's a looker and a player. Not as loud as my Flea (unless plugged in) but that might be because of the different strings I use (I won't go into that one, got 14 ukes, all set up different...). As for the thing in the review? Apalling blasphemy done poorly. As for Ovation: they still make uke's but with a plain round sounhole. There's a review here somewhere, but not that much praise unfortunately...

I have one and happen to quite like it. Out of the box it was pretty good, but I did make a couple minor modifications. I always do a setup on any instrument I get, so I actually enjoy that. Yes, the tuners weren't great, but I had a set of Grovers on hand that I had removed from a different uke. I added a pre-amp to mine. I almost always dress the fret ends and round the nut edges anyways. Since I was adding a pre-amp, I also changed the saddle to a compensated bone saddle and set the action to slightly low. The height at the nut was just right, but I gave the slots a slight treatment to ensure a smooth passage. I've had it for about two years now, and it gets played quite a lot. I like it.

  • @GotAUkulele

The thing about setup on any instrument I review is - I am reviewing for a wide audience - many of whom have never touched setup and many are getting their first instrument. I have to consider those people where a poor setup could be fatal to their choice. Personally, I found it sounded pretty basic too.

Thanks for giving us all the 'things' too look for, or consider when buying. Whilst I'd not buy any uke lacking a seller setup, those who do have benefited from your expertise AND opinions. I have a Caramel ebony tenor that was gifted to me. I did the set up myself, and changed the strings, and since it's electro-acoustic, it can be fiddled with enough to produce some interesting sounds. But the "whatever it is" on the front, I am painting to make it resemble autumn leaves instead of the debated idea of the Koi...with those changes, it is a little more unique. Overall, I am enjoying it, but my favorite uke will still be my Ortega archtop concert uke.

I don't like the sound. Its muted , short, and yeah, thin to me and I listened twice..ergh. I don't mind the overall appearance (like that it's dark too) and think people are attracted to this given ukuleles are pretty generic in appearance. Have no idea that it's a derivative of Ovation. The leaf design reminds me of autumn leaves. But true about the lack of originality. Glad there are reviews to save wasting time checking them out personally.
