It's obviously a silly comparison so don't take it too seriously however it shows that a $20 uke can still be used as a proper instrument - provided it stays in tune!

For a soprano to get that kind of a rich tone, like a tenor? Yeah, definitely costs much more than a toy, which is what the other one is.

It doesn’t matter how much it is, give a $1000 ukulele to a beginner player and it will sound like a $20 ukulele, give a professional player a $20 ukulele and it will sound a $1000 ukulele.

+Zach AnthonyK - it's an addiction! ...called UAS - Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. I'm a pretty bad case, though I mostly aim at low-price bargains that sound/work OK and then doctor them up to play well. In a few days work a $20 Mahalo won't sound just like a Kiwaya, but it'll sound much better and the neck/frets/action can be -almost- as good if one takes care.

The $1K uke sounds several orders of magnitude better, but a $20 uke will suffice to learn on and jam out on the beach. That being said, if a student is interested in seriously learning to play any instrument, the best advice I can give is to buy the best instrument you can afford. Your ear will develop better, learning will be easier due to the action, and over the life of the instrument you will hear it grow more beautifully sounding as the wood ages and adjusts to your playing style. It will also hold its value longer and even possibly increase in value. Plus, there’s nothing quite like holding a well-crafted instrument made of wood that feels so good in your hands. That being said, consider the maturity of the student and their ability to care for it. Also, make sure to get it adjusted and setup professionally after you buy it and study up on instructions for caring for the instrument as well as any special instructions for the climate it will be most often exposed to daily.

I'd like to learn this instrument. This video was helpful in finding/choosing an instrument to begin with, and what to look for when purchasing my next one. Dillon Taylor You're not necessarily paying more for better tone, instead you're paying for a different tone, a tone that is achieved by the wood used and stuff, on top of higher quality hardware. Only certain woods can get certain tones, and in some cases, those woods are much more expensive.

Literally the only reason why they sound different is because the Mahalo uke is plastic with nylon strings, and the Kiwaya is wood with probably aquila strings. You can get a cheap uke that's wood and aquila strings that will sound just as good as the Kiwaya.

Actually, a solid wood uke does sound significantly better then a plywood (so called laminate) uke. I can see paying up to a few hundred for a decent, well made, solid wood, properly set up, soprano uke -- but that price is ridiculous. The fret board and bridge is rosewood (not ebony which would be better). I'm not too impressed. On the company's web site they have George playing a KMS-K which goes for a ridiculous $1750.00.takumiukulele.com/product/kms-k/

The Kiwaya had much richer tone, it sounded awesome. Mahalo also did incredibly good considering it's only $20, but it sounded like a toy compared to that awesome tone of Kiwaya. I'm looking forward to learn playing ukulele and I think I'm going to buy a Mahalo.

Josh YouAre I agree, its definitely much easier to play and feels amazing and it was a little bit more difficult to play the tune on the yellow one. I just wanted to prove the $20 can do the job for beginners as I learned loads of skills on it for months before 'graduating' to the kiwaya. To me its definitely worth the money especially in terms of tuning stability, intonation and tone. Thanks for the compliments! G

There ya go, and I bet you like yours just as much more, because it did not cost you 1000 bucks. The most I ever paid for any uke was around $75, and it's one that doesn't even play, it's an antique that hangs on my wall.

My music store sells mahalo ukes for 20 dollars but then a big price gap to 80+ dollars for all other ukes (im not willing to spend that much for an instrument i have no experience in), one of the workers there said that there is supposed to be like middle ground (30-40$) that sounds and just as good as the 80+ dollar group. Sadly those ukes are sold out, probably meant that it sold well, the worker said that it will restock in a few more weeks so thats cool def gonna check it out

Obviously, when you start out, the price of an instrument doesn't matter. Building up skill is much more important and a functioning $20 Ukelele is enough for that. A better instrument doesn't make you a better player.

+ConWolf Sorry to disagree, though a better instrument does not make you a better player it does help. Cheap instruments tend to be harder to keep in tune, finishing of frets is not good, sound is less than motivational. This comparison of a 20 to 1000 is a bit funny but the difference is very audible. Any guitar player would agree with me to buy a reasonable priced guitar, and not some

  • @W0lfw00d178

+ConWolf I disagree though, in this case it can be good. I also have a mahalo and a luna. So i see where you are coming from. But your skill is based on how well you can read and play chords/tabs. But Playing on a cheap instrument can set a standard for bad habits, and hearing chords on a cheap instrument can be distorted from a expensive well built instrument, So when you actually go to play on a much better instrument it can throw you off because your not used to playing a instrument that has better sound quality. It happened to me when i first learned to play guitar. I suggest if anything picking up a cheap guitar/uke play for 3 months and if you really love it, and develop a passion, pay the extra for a much better quality instrument with a much more trusted name.

+loon2u4fun It doesn't matter the price of the instrument, it depends on the person who plays it. I am sure those poor Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii didn't have thousands of dollars to drop on their musical instruments, but here we are arguing about it. Money doesn't make better music, hard work and talent do. Passion for music or passion for having an instrument you can brag about the cost of?

+eldragon00 Yeah well, Im amazed that the 20 dollar one is playable. If I were to play the Ukulele I would probably spend 100 dollars or something on my first Ukulele just to "be safe", but the 20 dollar one seems fine to begin with. but let me get things straight, you said in your comment that a "3 digit DIFFERENCE would be reasonable? 20 dollars = 2 digits 20000 = 5 digits (3 digit difference) Haha well no worries man, I know what you mean, just replace the word difference with "price", right? I hope that is what you mean because I'd not spend a 5 digit number on any Ukulele.
