As a guitarist, it is hard for me to find gospel music where I can learn more about playing in church (specifically guitar). Whenever musicians come in to play they have so much experience and play amazingly. I know that they have had good teachers and have dedicated the time to practice and I am sure they would make great teachers. The only problem is... none of them are guitarist so I can't ask any of them for help. All I can do at this point is play the simple chord progressions that I can hear in the songs ( 1,4,5 and 2 3 6 minors) and occasionally play in the pentatonic scale in particular songs and moments . I am looking to learn how to play as a pianist would play in church but, on guitar. I just wish I knew more and where to start in learning the genre.

bro i have never related to comment so much. Please let me know if you found where or what to learn/practice. its so hard for me to find what to practice. Experienced players just tell me to practice but idk how to practice what I want to practice if that makes sense haha idk.

@@scottrodriguez1408 I’ve expanded my guitar vocabulary. I’ve learned the blues scale for lead. A lot of what i know in gospel is still improvised. I play a lot of minor 7 chords arpeggiating wherever it sounds clean. The best lead you can do is simply playing the melody and adding riffs and licks when you have time and space. I have a great music conductor so he knows when to tell everyone else to “shhh” for a little bit and let the guitar sound shine. Piano is often playing rhythm so i’m not playing chords often unless i’m arpeggiating. We have an audio interface hooked up to all of our sound in church for our live streams so what i do to practice listen back to the recordings. Learning triad patterns were a huge expansion to just the pentatonic and blues scale. Learning “preacher chords” for common walk downs and walk ups. If you want we have a ton of videos of music you can play along to as well @nccjca

additionally, to "learn" this style, it's really all about actually going to a gospel church and listening. there are no records nor method books for this style -- it's about immersion
