Goshawks on Pheasants, over pointers.

A morning on a local farm, hunting Pheasants with a Goshawk.
After leaving the farm yard, we headed along a hedgerow leading into a game crop.
The dogs hunted well, with several Pheasants flushed, before Lush and Calla came on point directly in front of Keith. Cammy helped flush the Pheasant and the Goshawk was slipped.
After a short flight the Goshawk struck the Pheasant and after a further 100m or so, caught it.
Keith made his way in and after fitting the tail guard, he allowed time for the Hawk to plume it's kill, before trading the Hawks normal rations for the Pheasant.
To maintain the birds quality of flight and to keep them keen, Keith only allows a single kill.
We then headed back to the pickup.
On the way, the dogs pointed on a Pheasant sitting tight in a ditch. After a bit of persuasion from Cammy, it flushed out into the glare from the sun.
On arriving back at the pickup, Keith returned Rheagar, the Goshawk, back to it's box and prepared Rhaena, the Ferrutail, for a flight later, at the next location.

Thanks Lee. We went out with the Ferrutail later that day on the brown hares. Got some good footage and hope to combine that with a future outing. Kenny

I feel a high level of gameplay and romance in the fact that the hunting is done not with guns but only with animals. Goshawk is beautiful.

Yes. The connection between the hawk and falconer is exceptional. A lot of time is spent getting to this level.

Will Goshawks take grey squirrels generally or are they not preferred if there are pheasants about? I'm looking for an alternative grey squirrel management as external manual hobbyist management has let me down in reducing the numbers so I'm wondering if there is a more natural way. I know we can't rid all the greys without a costly countrywide scheme but the trail cams show an increase of more than double in the past few weeks and spring is only just here.

In the wild, Goshawks are very astute at catching grey Squirrels and can form a large proportion of their diet. However falconers would be reluctant to use them for Squirrel control, as they have a nasty bite that could lead to injured tendons, loss of foot or death.
