The official name of the cathedral of Gorizia is Cathedral of Saints Ilario and Taziano Martiri. The current exterior of the Cathedral, in neoclassical style, dates back to 1924. The bell tower was built in 1500. The first church was built in the 13th century. Between 1682 and 1702 the interior of the church underwent a radical makeover in the Baroque style. In the central nave there is the pulpit by Angelo De Putti which dates back to 1711, and was built at the behest of the city's nobility.
The main altar, rich in polychrome marbles, is the work of Giovanni Pacassi from 1707. The statues of Saints Ilario and Taziano and that of the two angels are attributed to Pietro Baratta. On the back wall, a canvas by Giuseppe Tominz with the Virgin to whom Saints Hilary and Taziano turn, dated 1823. The stalls for the canons and the bishop's chair are enlivened by thirteen scenes depicting the verses of the Paternoster: they are the work of Giuseppe Bernardis , who carved them between 1834 and 1836.
