COIMBRA - Monastery of the Holy Cross (Mosteiro de Santa Cruz)

The Monastery of the Holy Cross (Mosteiro da Santa Cruz) is also known as the Church of the Holy Cross. Because the first two kings of Portugal are buried in the church it was granted the status of National Pantheon. Founded in 1131 outside the protecting walls of Coimbra, the Monastery of the Holy Cross was the most important monastic house during the early days of the Portuguese monarchy. The monastery and church were erected between 1132 and 1223. Nothing remains of the early Romanesque monastery. In the first half of the 16th century, the Monastery was completely renovated by King Manuel's order. The facade was built in two phases. Both imposing towers were built between 1507 and 1513. The portal was designed by the master builder João de Castilho and between 1522 and 1526 it was completed by Nicolas de Chantereine. On the round arch of the portal stand two angels, playing the trombone and holding up the arms of the Portuguese kings. Above there are three niches, in which the statues of King David with his harp, Mary and a prophet are housed. On the sides, the Fathers of the Church stand on pedestals, each separated by a column, Gregory the Great and Saint Ambrose on the left, Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine on the right. The pulpit was the work of Nicolas de Chantereine in 1522. The pulpit platform is full of small scenes in Renaissance style, adorned with cherubs and grotesques.
