Gorillaz Perform The Pink Phantom ft Elton John | Song Machine Live

Damon Albarn and the full Gorillaz band are joined by Elton John and 6LACK for the first live performance of 'The Pink Phantom' at Song Machine Live from Kong Studios. We loved to see guitarist Noodle, bassist Murdoc Niccals, drummer Russel and frontman 2D take the global stage for an unforgettable show last December 12 and 13.

When the song opened with 2D vocal having no filter, I began hoping we'll finally have a version of the song without the cringe autotune on 6black's vocals. I was horribly wrong. Is autotune 6lack's crutch? Can't he sing?

@@godaberi Like it or not, the song leans on their vocal harmony, 6lack could have just given his excellent beat, but regardless of what you think of autotune it is out of place in this song that showcases powerful vocals. Most of the instrumentals in the song is very subdued, and the vocalists are the main force of the song. If you think of autotune as an instrument separate from the vocalist's performance, it sticks out like a sore thumb amongst every other element in the sound. It neither sounds sincere nor is it enhancing any element in the song. Like having golf players comprise your defensive line in a game of football.

@@thegooseman508 Everyone's *vocals* were amazing. Autotune isn't 6lack's vocal, its a tool or an instrument. The sound of this instrument sticks out awfully like a kazoo solo in a band playing a sombre ballad. 6lack's element is his beat which was excellent, but they chose extremely poorly to add autotune to it. Unless of course 6lack's voice somehow sounds even worse than without autotune.
