    Considering silverback mountain gorillas regularly lose fights against leopards, I think it's safe to say a giant brown bear has too many scenarios of winning over the gorilla.

  • @rgmoses2189

    @rgmoses2189

    Жыл бұрын

    True but a majority of the losses on the gorillas side were on juveniles, in cases in which Silverbacks have directly confronted predatory leopards in the jungle, a majority of leopards back off due to being outmatched. Saying "regularly kills gorillas" is correct but isn't accurate when it comes to healthy Silverbacks. At the end of the day I agree 100% that a Grizzly would blitz

    The problem between the two is the bear is a natural killer. It is an apex predator. While the gorilla is massively powerful, it just doesn't have true weapons. People think bears are so cute and cuddly looking, and they are, but that hides the truth about their capabilities. Seeing a bear in the wild get mean is one of the most intimidating things you will ever see. Their power is legendary and their speed is terrifying.

    Size matters. A LOT. The gorilla has a bite. The bear has a bite and two powerfully deadly paws with huge claws. They weight more that twice as much. With a thick coat and a lifetime of fighting other bears as well as bringing down large dangerous prey like elk, maybe even moose, I just don’t see the gorilla winning this. The Siberian tiger or the male African lion are the best match ups for the grizzly bear. But I still give the edge to the bear. It’s just so damn big, powerful, and fast.

    Good point! I've heard a term for this called "survivorship bias." It describes a scenario when data on a threat is informed only by people who have survived encounters with it. I remember hearing this story about American bombers during WWII in Europe coming back to the airfield with tons of bullet holes from the Luftwaffe. The engineers inspected where the planes were damaged, and decided to put more armor on those parts. As they quickly learned, this was the wrong approach because the planes damaged in non-critical areas survived, whereas the planes damaged in critical areas were the ones that didn't make it back. The funny thing about survivorship bias is that there's no good way to get data on the threat until your methods of challenging it improve! Firearms had to improve to learn how deadly the Grizzly is, just as engineers had to try armor in different places to learn how to make bombers more survivable.

I think there's a debate for an average Siberian tiger vs average grizzly - the tiger probably wins. But the biggest grizzly vs the biggest Siberian tiger is a battle between 2200 lb and 850 lb pretty sure the bear beats it unless really unlucky strike. However, the bear for sure has a lot higher fat percentage As big of a size difference that is, the average Siberian vs the average size grizzly there is not that much of a difference in size its like 480 lb for Siberian male tiger and 590 lb for an average male grizzly, here I think the tiger most often would win if they would ever get in a fight. Mostly it will just end in them both running away.

Only desperation over food seem to be enough to provoke the average tiger to fight full on, kill or be killed. (some very large males do the kill anything in my territory thing but its extremely rare) Lions on the other hand grow up fighting one another both playfully and seriously, with weaker males being either killed or driven out of the pride. All of that said, rogue Tiger's are a serious threat, They are known to kill and stalk seriously large prey on their own and are still a threat even to the hunters hired to kill them armed with modern firearms. Where as rogue lions treated are more of nuisance to farmers and their livestock and many farmers taking them out by themselves, over zealously at times. I'd say the average Male Lion would kill the average Male Tiger. However at the top end of the scale, the rarities, like the tiger taking on a full grown elephant or the lion that takes on the same. i'd say it goes to the Tiger, those fuckers are freaks of nature.

    It's a simple fact. Pound for pound, bears are the worst mammalian carnivore group to put against an ape of any sort. They pretty much cancel out any advantage a primate holds over other animals. They can fight on two legs, they are actually very intelligent, they are surprisingly dexterous, and can climb just as well. And this isn't even taking into account their superior weaponry and defensive options. Great video, Seth. I know this isn't your field of expertise but I'd certainly love to see more like this as well as your Dragonball and Naruto videos. 10/10.
