Gorilla Mother Kala Nursing Her Baby And Showing Me The Finger

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

New gorilla video series starting this week. As you might know from the special edition video a couple of weeks back that Kala the gorilla at Bristol Zoo had a baby. So the new series will all be about the Bristol Zoo gorillas.
Just so you know why the quality of the video isn't as good as I would have liked it to be. Bristol Zoo is quite a difficult place to film inside, even before coronavirus the barrier didn't allow to get close to the glass to cut off any reflection. Now with COVID 19, there is a new edition of ropes to keep you even further away from the window. I will try my best to get the best footage I can in the given circumstances. In this video it was all inside as it was raining quite heavy. I'm just editing next weeks footage and there will be outside footage, so you can really get a good close up look at the little one next week. Even with a rainy day, the zoo was still really busy and of course, everybody wanted to see the baby gorilla. A one-way system meant, trying to get a glimpse before you got moved on so other people could have a look. I felt like tieing myself to the barriers and refusing to move😂🤣 . I then walked all the way around the zoo again and queued again. A glimpse, walking around the zoo, standing in the rain queuing and get another glimpse. How many rounds I did that day, I don't know, I lost count, but every glimpse makes it worthwhile.
Anyway to the video. Western lowland gorilla nine-year-old Kala is lying in the wood wool and she casually giving me the finger with her baby in her arms. She turns away and starts picking her nose. On the next round, I managed to get a glimpse of Kala and her baby above me, sitting on the glass roof. She moves away and time for me to make another round. On seeing her next she's having her lunch, tucked away in a corner. After that she lies on her back, grabbing her baby, checking it over. She moves on having her little one on the back of her shoulders. Resting again in the nest, she has a big yawn. I'm not quite sure who joined her there as the two girls Ayana and Afia look quite similar from the back. Kala is happy to let the youngster inspect the baby. She even puts a hand around her. Later she rocks the baby in her arm. The girl is having another quick look at the baby.
They don't know the sex yet of the baby, but I'm 99.9% sure it's a boy joining the two girls in the group. 😁 But we have to wait and see if I'm right. Apparently, it's quite difficult to know with Gorillas as they are hands-off with them. They should use a good zoom lol. Bristol Zoo was famous for getting it wrong with the gorilla namen Kukena. Only found out after 6 years that in fact it was a female. 😁😁
More info about the Bristol Zoo Gorillas:
The first Gorilla arrived at Bristol zoo in 8th September 1930 named Alfred. The Zoo itself opened in July 11th 1836! The first gorilla birth was on the March 6th 1971.
Currently, there are 7 gorillas at the Bristol Zoo.
Starting of with Jock the Silverback, he was born on the May 31st 1983 at Zoo La Palmyre. He got moved to the Bristol Zoo on the 25.June 2003. His offspring are: Namoki, Komale, Kukena, Afia, Ayana and the new baby.
Kera was born on the August 26th 2004 at the Parc Zoológic de Barcelona. She moved to the Bristol zoo on the 08.September.2008. Her offspring is Afia.
Afia was born by emergency cesarean section at Bristol Zoo on the 12th of February 2016 after her mother, Kera, showed symptoms of potentially life-threatening pre-eclampsia. She had to be hand-raised. Gorilla Romina took an interest in Afia when the keepers walked past her Afia on their arm. So Afia was slowly introduced to Romina and in October started bonding with her surrogate mother. Kera did recover after being ill for a while but didn't reconize Afia as her daughter. Romina took over to raise her, but sadly they had to put her to sleep in Aug 2018 because she had an advanced large cancerous mass in her abdomen. Afia by then was part of the group and dad Jock and the other females looked after her.
Touni was born on the 12th of December 2007 at the La Vallée des Singes and got moved to the Bristol Zoo on the 28.September 2015. Her daughter is Ayana who was born on the 22nd of April 2017. Jock is the dad of Afia and Ayana.
Kala was born on the 11th of December 2010 in Hannover. She's the newest member of the group as she joined on the 16.October 2018. She was pregnant in Sep 2019, but sadly lost the baby. The cause of death is unknown. As you'll know from this video Kala had another baby on the 19th of August 2020 and mum and baby doing really well according to staff.
Kukena who was in previous Bristol zoo gorilla videos was born on the 27th of September 2011, but she has been moved on to sunnier climes to the Madrid Zoo.

Thank you SV, that’s a lovely video. Mom Kala and baby are building a strong and beautiful bond. There’s so much love in the way Kala rocks and hugs her precious little one. Also, I loved to watch the way Kala and the little girl get along well, with mom letting her touch the baby. Amazing series. Can’t wait for the next one. I’m a big fan of your videos.

It always amazes me how much they are like us. Putting her arm around the older daughter as if to say I still got ya, Momma still loves you too even though we have a new baby. And rocking the baby to sleep or for comfort just like a human mother will do. I just love seeing the similarities between us!!
