Agreed. Judo which is a high amplitude sport with submissions still isnt mainstream in N.A. Wrestling is still not mainstream. Kicboxing isnt even mainstream in NA, even though it could argued, it is more exciting than boxing. Social media including streaming platforms have made it viable for the top wrestlers, grapplers, judoka's to make a living. Including their own content and the opportunity for brands to advertise through them, like any other industry, adds some more income.

Gord Ryan sacrificing an mma career for Danaher's unguarenteed dream of Grappling being bigger is a bit disappointing. Garry tonen had his best grappling performance, got a bronze at ADCC, while being a pro mma fighter. So it's not like Gordon would have to quit grappling, in fact his name would just get bigger and bring new eyes to grappling. I think John secretly doesn't want Gordon taking the inevitable damage even the best MMA fighters take. Which, considering the money Gordon has made in pure grappling, is a far better argument for Gordon avoiding mma.

This is actually not a bad idea. Only thing is, and mind you I love MMA and bjj and anything combat sports really, but combat jj just looks gay as hell. I'm sorry. I think if they really wanna bridge the gap, they should have the ruleset be where striking in a standing position where no clinch or standing grappling isn't allowed, but all striking(in mma standards) is allowed on the ground. Then, it would be practically the bees knees. But, as for now, it looks retarded and hasn't picked up any notable traction, in my opinion. Bareknuckle boxing is more popular. I feel like it would be an I'll advised choice for Gordon.

And gordon ryan seems like a bigger, better version of them with hype behind him before his first match. Also he is very outspoken something i don't always like but the careers of McGregor, Chael Sonnen etc. prove that trash talks gets you ahead and gets you fights. Ryan Hall seems like a really nice dude and is super intelligent but fights so rarely I'm afraid his age will get to him before he can reach the pinnacle of his capabilities in the sport.

I think, if he doesn’t rush it like so many other specialists, he could do very well. Looking at his game, Gordon rarely (especially in recent years) sits backwards into leg locks from top position, but rather works his way through the pin hierarchy towards the back. He did, after all, get 5 RNCs in ADCC 2019, with only one heel hook. I also doubt that he will pull guard in MMA. Looking at his training partner, Garry Tonon, who has had 4 fights in ONE FC. Garry tends to choose to G&P rather than look for submissions in most cases, unless it gains him a position, or very open for attack. He has been seen to fall back into a heel hook one or twice, but that is Garry’s grappling style, not Gordon’s. I do have some concerns for Gordon however: 1. Gordon’s grappling style is very methodical without many scrambles. This may not be the best for MMA, where you get max 3 min on the ground per round, so he will have to act fast. 2. Gordon isn’t very athletic, and carries lots of muscle. He may lack explosiveness for striking, or gas out very quickly (look at Rodolfo’s last fight). 3. Gordon has mediocre takedowns, which may prevent him from actually getting the fight to the ground. Especially if he goes against a D1 wrestler who could easily defend his takedowns. 4. He may rush it. He is only 25, and should take his time with it. Looking at Kron Gracie and Rodolfo Viera, they rushed into fighting the top 15 of the division before even getting 7 pro fights. The best specialists who do well in MMA take their time. Werdum, Khabib and Adesanya all had roughly 15 fights before the UFC, allowing them to expand out of their speciality

Grappling, in and of itself, can be a wonderful pursuit in life, and a great self-defensive option; however, trying to transition from pure grappling to MMA-style competition is a sudden run into a violent wall; because, unless you can aggressively overcome being punched in the nose - hard, you will fail.

The problem with leg specialists in MMA is that they don't do that well historically because they end up being avoided by other fighters. Palhares got banned, but even if he wasn't, he would have ended up as Ryan Hall, stuck. Regarding Gordon Ryan, I think he has the potential to become a GOAT when it comes to teaching BJJ. He's very methodical, and systematic, and BJJ schools desperately need revamping their stale curriculums and methods of teaching. I think he has a very bright future if he takes that road.

Even more paramount than martial artists going into boxing as the fundamental principle of jiu jitsu is that it works in a combat situation. Judo had the same thing for the last 20+ years, had many conversations like this at national events. Anything could happen and sub grappling/bjj could really take off economically but I don't see what he's hoping for happening. Judo kept trying to change the rules "to be more appealing to fans" for it to really take off and in my opinion it killed it. Gordon could switch to mma, have some fights and have retirement money, just like Ronda when Jimmy was telling her the same thing that John is saying about Gordon. The reality is if Gordon transitions it would probably end his innovations in bjj because you really need a specifically mma focused, more basic version of grappling in mma, not super, double watusi xyz asteroid guard complicated, with punches it makes things much more basic. ps-11:20 exactly what khahib has, people are so scared to get taken down they are hesitant to play their game so then they are at more of a disadvantage.
