    This was one of the best episodes so far, if not the best! It's a shame people did not appreciate this and it has so few views compared to other episodes. Awesome technical discussion with one of the sport's engineering legends. Gordon's insight to the fan car and the BT55 was downright thrilling. Thanks for your work Tom!

    McLaren did their first carbon fiber chassis in the US, because no one in the UK, at that time, was mastering the technique of unidirectional carbon cloth layering, which John Barnard wanted. As Gordon said, riveting carbon fiber panels was a no-no, which led to structural failure. A future episode with John Barnard would probably shed more light on the fact 😉

    the british press only care about moral victories - i guess that is all they have to sell papers . . . real victories are almost impossible for them to find they think that their hero, who was beaten by his team mate by 24 points, while suffering from major concussion and was playing by the team's and engine manufacturer's rules still somehow won a moral victory

    If you're seeing this, I urge you to listen to the interview with Steve Nichols on the "JayEmm on Cars" KZread channel. The idea that the McLaren MP4/4 was designed using lessons learned from the Brabham BT55 seems not to be the truth. I have always been a fan of Gordon, but Steve Nichols deserves credit for designing the MP4/4.

  • @Crazy_Guitar

    @Crazy_Guitar

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yep! The MP4/4 was Nichols' brainchild! According to Steve, Gordon wasn't at all interested in designing another car and his job was being a Technical Manager, not a Cheif Designer. He had inputs (suggestions) on the gearbox linkage and the monocoque moulding (which Nichols ended up accepting), but that was about the input Gordon had on the MP4/4. So, enough bragging about the MP4/4, please, Mr. Murray.

    Patrick head was telling Honda for years that the oil filter was in the wrong place on the v6, being underneath the engine. If they copied the cosworth oil scavenging design it could have been 33mm lower. Honda were in love with senna though. and ducarouge persuaded Honda that the 87 lotus could win races with a Honda engine & senna onboard, and that they didn’t need the low engine. Honda didn’t want to supply two engine designs so stayed with the tall engine. Williams was designing a lower car for the low engine for ‘88, but senna and Honda and the ‘low’ engine went to McLaren. So Patrick head deserves some credit for the ‘88 McLaren.

    This interview did not age well in light of the letter that was written and signed by all the McLaren designers of the MP4-4. That letter documented the egregious inaccuracies in Iam Bamsey's book about the MP4-4. The sole source for the MP4-4 was Gordon Murray. If Gordon was actually involved in the detailed design of the MP4-4, then why did he get so many details completely wrong? The reality was Gordon was not involved in the detailed design of the MP4-4. He was operating at the Corporate level at McLaren. But once it was successful, like so many self promoters, Gordon took credit for work he was not involved in. Listed to Steve Nichols commentary about the MP4-4 and judge for yourself. Which person's statements ring true? Murray is a great designer who did not have to take credit for others work to pad his resume.

    I know I’m late, but something interesting is that it appears that Gordon’s philosophy is what led to the great success of the MP4/4. The car was clearly related to his Brabham but with a Honda engine which fixed the issues of the BMW he had at Brabham. Gordon demanded a low profile engine in order to suit the needs of his design and even Nichols has noted that the engine was a huge contributor to the MP4/4’s success. I don’t know more than the next fan, but it has always appeared to me that Gordon’s philosophy on design led to the success of the car even if the technical details were done by Nichols and his team. I don’t believe those ideas are contrary to one another.

    I missed opportunity to talk about many drivers he worked with. Tom Clarkson is unbelievably unprofessional. It is always about Senna. If he interviewed anyone he would find a way to talk about Senna. Despicable.

    Could not agree more... Tom Clarkson is biased, un professional and does not respect his guests, but leads them Murray says Piquet is best all rounder and Tom just plays dumb because his dead idol was not the best.

    I must just add it is very veryyyyyyyy clear that Tom Clarkson is anti Nelson Piquet and almost doesn't want to see what he was about and how he was respected by others. Jean Alesi talks about how Piquet helped him in his early years and Tom just skirts over it. In this interview Gordon Says Piquet is the best allrounder and that includes working with Senna in the incredible 88 season. Tom doesn't even take it further but focuses on Senna like he is a gay school boy in love with Senna. Sorry but that is disrespectful.

    Crixus Mauperthuis Cmon, to say Barrichello was better than Senna. You’d leave Senna out of a top three of Brazilian drivers.
