About ten years ago or so, Gordon was set to play a concert out on the west coast here. I didn't really have the money to go but I was worried I might never get the opportunity again so I dug deep, sold a few things I didn't really love and managed to scrape together enough cash to buy tickets for myself, my wife and my mother and the three of us went to see him to celebrate my mother's birthday. I have plenty of regrets in my life, but selling things to find a way to see Gordon play is not one of them.

He's in a whole different league from Bieber, but it shows he's a humble guy. I don't even think of Gordon Lightfoot as a singer. He's a real troubador. A true bard.

Yes. Gordon Lightfoot is just too classy to put anybody else down. He's too much of a gentleman (like my dear father) to go there. I've got to get his new albums and get caught up. I'm listening to his Canada Day appearance every night. Tag Along is my new obsession. Love it that Sunday Morning Comin' Down is one of his favorite songs. Kristopher's Why Me Lord is probably another one. The first one tells my story before AA, the 2nd one after. Love ya, GL, and look forward to seeing you on stage again. Thanks for the memories.....

I think of people like Lightfoot as very top tier, elite class creators (with Paul Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, and many others, etc)... Listen to his performances then go listen to Bieber's... Idk... Hearing people I respect give such jaw-dropping different opinions (even the musician above in the replies)... I guess music is just all completely subjective appreciation... It's just SO, SO difficult to believe that there is no objective greatness attatched to such refined high iq/eq writers and artists, as opposed to rich kiddies playing on their Korgs and laying down a bunch of pre-rendered samples and single layer beats; writing classless songs about superficial cringe and materialism... The exaltation of such soulless efforts are affronts to life itself and the divine spirit within each of us. As far as MY worthless opinion, as a lifelong musician and lyricist, goes, it's like hearing a musician like Mozart and a poet like Yates, both, together, praising a monkey banging on a drum while grunting. It's very difficult for me to empathize with, in just about every conceivable way. I understand exactly what people like Bieber's lyrics mean (I HAVE stopped to look at many of today's lyrics) and I know how to appreciate the style of music (I mean, who wouldn't know how to? It appeals to the 2 year old in all of us... It's to music as porno is to film. We all understand how porno can be appreciated...) But whatever... I mean, to me, it's truly disturbing and a thundering desecration to put Bieber next to Lightfoot... Okay, enough. I'm done now. Sry.

@@luceatlux7087 Very well written comment. I'm with you and also a musician. I have no problem with today's pop stars and rappers, but to even suggest any kind of artistic equivalence between them and the likes of Lightfoot is disrespectful and insulting. There is absolutely such a thing as superior music and lyricism, just like there is superior cuisine, fashion, film-making...and any other art form.

I'm SO glad to hear him say good things about Justin Bieber. What a class act.Bieber is actually very talented, it is easy to mock him, but Gordon is comfortable enough in his own skin to praise Bieber. Unlike, for example, Maynard James Keenan, who, when Bieber said he was a Tool fan, took the opportunity to minimize Bieber. I never thought much about Bieber until I actually took the time to listen to some of his work, and when he went on SNL and made fun of himself, he won me over.

That's such a sweet story. I had older siblings who turned me on to 60's and 70's music at a young age, and I remember Gordon had a way to make me feel like everything was going to be okay when I heard his songs. We had lost our father in 1975, and I could also relate to many of the songs back then about heartache and loss. It seems like some songwriters can write music and words that can make one more aware of feelings deep inside... and that is a good thing.

In early wee hours when the mind won't sleep, I sometimes hear him singing around a campfire on Isle Royale to a small group of friends. Fell out of a chair when I heard McLachlan's version of the classic Song for a winter's night - his poetry mimics Rembrandt - the painter of man. Down to earth, workin the land, trying desperately to maintain real loving relationships with a woman. We all try, don't we?

What a wonderful humble man and such a great songwriter and vocalist. I saw Gordon in concert, outdoors, sometime around 75/76, it started to rain and we begged for Rainy Day People. He said he hadn’t played it in sometime but would give it a try. ❤

~ Sundown and other records by Lightfoot I still have and enjoy. It was all about his music, and it still is. Real singing, analogue sounds, real instruments played by human beings, and the voices: all just as they came from the vocal cords with no enhancement. It is just about good, real music from the heart. Thank you, Gordon Lightfoot! Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

If You Could Read My Mind is the first song I heard by him. I must have been 12. Bought his album. I still love that song to this day and I'm almost 65. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is great too. His masterpiece I would say. Saw him in concert maybe 10 years ago. Wonderful experience. RIP Gordon. What a beautiful man.

I just watched some young people doing reaction videos listening to 'If I could read your Mind' and they were genuinely moved by a song written around 1970. It was moving to see.

Gord's amazing! Saw him several times in concert and got to meet him, Terry (God rest his soul) and Rick many, many years ago after a show in Saratoga, NY. So mellow and down to earth! Just a fantastic human being.

Around 1979 or 1980, I watched Gordon's HBO concert at my home. I'd already come to enjoy his music, but hadn't really thought much about it. But I was really surprised at the huge number of great & memorable & timeless classics he kept pulling up, all from his own imagination & hard work, and it was then that I realized he must be the human equivalent of Canada's National Treasure. I like him and his music more now than I ever did. Where will we be someday, when he's no longer with us? We'll always be mourning his loss, I think, but we'll be forever grateful that he was born.

Wow he seems so cool. I have loved his music for so many decades. If you could read my mind Was the song I played over anf over on the record when i was a kid. Its what made me feel music and inspired me to want to play music probably when was only 4 or 5 years old. his voice was so smooth. Now the new music lacks feeling.

I never thought my feelings of admiration and respect for Gordon Lightfoot could grow even stronger but this interview proved me wrong. An amazing human being, brilliant songwriter and singer. One of the few people I wish I could have met and talked to. I miss him as if I knew him personally - his songs gave me so much joy.
