Gordon Lightfoot is a poet from a great era of original groundbreaking songwriters whose likes may not pass this way again. Those windows open for a short time, and vanish as suddenly as they appeared. God forever bless the heart of a poet.

Funny you should say that... this song, Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind...all kind of intertwined and took me back that folk, poeti, searching but hopeful time and for whatever thought process brought to mind Rod McKuen, Kahlil Gibran, Peter, Paul and Mary....etc...Was a young wife and mother, and they all brought me comfort on a turbulent time.

Yes, the world of coffee houses and folk singer/songwriters yielded some incredible talent. When you have thousands of dedicated musicians honing their craft, those that rise to the top are going to be special. Currently its not just folk singers its musicians in general have no place to play, not enough paying gigs to keep many going long enough to develop the skills. We can only hope that over time that will change....because their are Gordon Lightfoots out there and Joni Mitchells, that will never realize their abilities....that's the real shame for us all.

Such a beautiful composition and heart-aching sentiment. The parting between lovers takes place at an airport in this song, but it could be a train station or anywhere that people say goodbye. In my case, it was the exit ramp of a highway. She walked away, and I could see her receding silhouette for what seemed like forever. She was gone but I would meet her again two years later. Life had changed. She got hurt by the next man and was looking for comfort. Unexpectedly, we made love, but there was no going back to the way it was. We were heading in different directions in life. I was scholarly and she was simple blue-collar. The parting had no drama as it had the first time out on the highway exit. We would meet again 30 years later, but only on social media. She had her church, two kids and a nasty divorce. I had one kid and a wonderful wife of 25 years, the true love of my life. Still, I would never regret the time we had together, but the image of her walking away on the highway exit has never left my mind. Thank-you Mr. Lightfoot for reminding me of the image every time I hear this song.

I was fortunate to meet him just outside the theatre as he was leaving in Indianapolis and we talked one on one. He's the real deal, down to earth guy. I just wanted to tell him how I appreciated his music and that it had helped me through a rough time in my life. I don't know why I did that rather unexpected thing but he was very kind without being patronizing. We talked some before he gave me his autograph. As is the case I just thought of Early Morning Rain and here we are. I noticed he was playing a 12 string guitar very cool.

When I was 18 and went into the Army I learned this song without knowing it. While the Drill Sergeants marched us around they would call out cadence calls, and one of them was "In the Early Morning Rain". It was sung out to us and we called back with the same cadence and tune of his song, but modified lyrics. It went like this: In the early morning rain With my weapon in my hand And my pockets full of sand As I lay me down to rest I caught a bullet in my chest Tell my baby not to cry Because I'll never say goodbye In the early morning rain.
