They do a split quadruple twist lift way better than most are able to do a split triple twist. They stopped doing it because it expended a lot of energy, was dangerous and they thought they never really got the credit they deserved for it.

I want to say that it wasn’t, that he was super healthy until his heart gave out-but who knows what he would have looked like without that problem? Looking back, he kind of had a bluish tint to his skin in Lillehammer that actually made him look like Prince Charming in his Moonlight Sonata costume. He was so pale in his baby blue costume in Calgary. Did he just look like a handsome exotic Russian, or did he have kind of a blue pallor that shouldn’t have been there? And were the mistakes in Lillehammer the mistakes of a superb athlete whose heart was pumping too hard and whose body had just 18 months to live? We’ll never know.

I love Sergie skating after seeing what I have been able to follow on their competitions, yes this is the only time out of the available footage on their competitions from , that I’ve seen Sergie make 2 mistakes he is such a polished skater ( with his ballet background) he just look flawless . He’s so strong the ways he tenderly handles & makes sure that at all times that Katia is secure., you could see from early on that this young man from the start had heart of Gold ( never selfish) he wanted Katia to get all the recognition !! What a partner ? Not only in skating but you could see after they knew that they were falling in love from then on you could see that she wore the PANTS IN THE HOUSE , you could see how much he adored her , the way he looked at her w/ so much love ❤️ , ( I think Katia was a graceful beautiful young lady turned to become beautiful woman ) what love these two had for one another , from that love came a beautiful little girl now a woman ( looks like Daddy) , What a beautiful love story ???? R.I.P. SERGIE 🙏🏼 & Katia so happy you kept on with your skating .....⛸❤️🥰💋😘😘

I am in love with the way Katia expresses emotion on the ice, in particular here, when she lands a throw jump, most skaters kind of have this look on their face like "Whew! Made it." not Katia, she lights up like Christmas, just beaming at the audience, "Yeeeah! Landed that!!" She totally draws the judges and the audience in with her expressions.

I sit here with tears in my eyes watching this beautiful pair skate.I remember this so vividly. I always loved them, Sergei was just so gorgeous and Ekaterina such a little doll. I notice poor Sergei skating with his mouth open for a couple of minutes then that lift and the commentator saying he looks a little bit tired. I wonder if Sergei might have been having problems back then but never said anything. Maybe just always thought it was nothing. You never know.... Rest your sweet soul, Sergei. You are deeply missed by so many~♥ And my heart broke for Ekaterina..

In those days both G & G received lots of medical testing and reporting through the Soviet skating system especially before their major competitions. Even her extreme heartbeat when she did those 4 revolutions in the air in the 4 split twist was recorded. Unlike Katia, Sergei had to do the whole program on his feet ;-) plus lift her, throw her and complete the jumps and spins. He also had to maintain the incredible unison and completing the beautiful lines in their positions. Plus he kept his jumps and spins at the same level as hers to hide the big discrepancy in heights. And they were skating faster than any other pairs team on the ice at that time. He almost always has his eyes on her to ensure the perfection. Makes sense he'd be tired and out of breath by the end not necessarily heart disease impacting him at that time. Later when Katia began skating solo she said it was very tiring and she had to re-condition herself to get used to being on the ice the full program. She said when she was with Sergei she had the opportunity to catch her breath through the program during the lifts or when he was guiding her on the ice. At the end of the programs he's panting and perspiring and she looks exquisite, smiling. Of course he wouldn't have had it any other way... :-)

afrogirl757 Thanks for the informative comment! I came over to YT after I saw your reply on G+ so I watched it again! lol Gosh, Sergei is just so gorgeous. I remember I was so in love with him and I actually broke down and CRIED when I heard that he had died on the rink. It was just so unreal. It was such a shock and I felt so,so bad for Ekaterina . Watching them on the ice over the years I always wanted them to be together and when they finally were and had Daria I was so happy for them. Then...the horrible news. Omigosh, I gotta stop!!! I went out of control there!! (again) And then her first solo skate. She skated as though he were still there beside her. When she came out 'holding his hand'. Omigosh I cried thru that performance. It's so weird to see her now with Ilia. That one really surprised me. But, gosh, it was so long ago but to see Daria now it makes it more real. I am glad Ekaterina found love again. But I know her heart must still ache for Sergei. Ok I read a few of your comments here and I see you are a G&G lover, too. But you know a lot more than I do about them. Talk to you later~

vegasjill21 Thanks for the complement. I think every woman was in love with Sergei after they watched them skate. I'd just seen them a few weeks earlier skating on TV and then he was gone. I remember being at work when I first heard and trying to explain to a co-worker who wasn't a skating fan why I was so upset. And I was shocked by how much they were loved all over the world. Only a few months ago did I start thinking about them again and was again shocked but this time with joy to find all their program here as well as the creative montages. Also had never seen the My Sergei movie before - must've been living under a rock when it came out in 98. I actually just found out more about them since joining the FB grp "We love Gordeeva and Grinkov!" In fact someone posted a recent photo of Daria there today. She's such a lovely lady now and still looks like her dad. After Sergei's death back in 96 even started taking skating lessons at 39 yo and that's where I learned what an aerobic workout skating is - and I definitely wasn't lifting or jumping. Just stroking the ice is great training. I dropped about 10 lbs that year not to mention excellent for the abs, thighs and buns LOL Almost 20 yrs later and G & G are still the best.

afrogirl757 Hi afrogirl757, The 57 in the 757 must be your birth year. Mine,to-..1957. I used to skate back when I was a teenager but wouldn't have even thought to put skates back on in my 'older' years! lol I'd have broken my neck!! lol Or ankles. haha But good for you...it is such great and fun exercise. I have always loved to see those girls wearing those beautiful costumes. The more silky and flowy the better!! Like Karina Smirnov on Dancing with the Stars. She always wears the most elegantly beautiful costumes!! I just love her!! But anyways, my Mom and I just adored watching all the skating events together over the years . If I missed an event I would be so upset!! Even at work someone always knew to come up to me and say "Ice skating is on!!!" So I'd run watch it in the breakroom if I had forgotten to tape it at home!! lol Up until the late 90's I 'knew' and was familiar with all the skaters. Now...when I see them again I almost cry to see how they've...we've...all aged. Gosh I'm OLD!!! :( The skaters that just mesmerized and drew me in were, of course, G&G, who could practically bring tears to my eyes not only for their beautiful staking and programs but also of their heart touching love story. Michelle Kwan was another who was untouchable as far as grace and beauty on the ice. Well, it's so nice to talk to you about this passion we have for these figure skaters. I'm sure I will talk to you again later. And if I finally get back on fb I would love to take part in the G&G page. Take care~ Jill

Yup! 1957 was the best year for Chevy trucks and women. LOL I completely agree with you about the golden age of skating. Ever since I was a little girl I've loved skating. There was a rink in the park across from our home. I'd skate til I was frostbit. G & G and Mishketunok & Dmitriev and Maria Butryskaya were the first Russian skaters I loved. Remember back in those days... I felt like I was only allowed to root for US, Canadian and British skaters. But they were awesome ambassadors - so good you had to cheer for them. Back in November I watched Kristi's annual family and friends show and shocked to see them with potbellies and wrinkles - just like me and knowing that they're still 10 yrs younger than me! LOL Katia has kept herself in incredible shape though and her skating still in demand at almost 43. I was disappointed that they didn't invite her and Ilia to Sochi with the other Russian gold medalists. But I've read that she and Ilia became US citizens a few years ago so maybe that's why. It's great chatting with you. If you haven't already- check out the Gordeeva.com facebook page and join the "We Love Gordeeva & Grinkov" facebook group. That's where I've learned a lot of tidbits about G & G. Its a fun group. Do you watch any of the current skaters? The Worlds competition is on this weekend. Have an awesome Tuesday. hugs- Marsha

He was self-confident with absolutely no ego. So many young men could have been absolute self-serving jerks when their little pairs partner just happened to turn into the most gorgeous woman ever. She was there for the taking, but he just grabbed her and loved her. That’s really unique.

I’m not Orthodox, although most of my country is largely orthodox and I don’t understand these silly little church laws, orthodox and catholic have come up with, which are in no way Biblical, but he was only married a few years and s father for fewer.

The commentators almost patronise G&G by calling them a 1 1/2 pair... well, they stayed a pretty darn long time in the sport to prove everyone that they were both equals. They were amazing together. RIP Sergei Grinkov, you are missed by ALL skating fans throughout the world.

I'm pretty they meant height. Like the best differential is when the male is 1 1/2 times the height of the female.

Which is pretty patronizing and dehumanizing. That “female” was Ekaterina Gordeeva and the “male” was Sergei Grinkov. They weren’t blue crabs fresh caught from the bay.

I think they were first on which might explain their lowish marks for technical merit. First quad twist in worlds, it took 20 years before we would see that again in competition.

Actually, the first quad twist lift was executed back at the 1978 or 1979 Worlds by Marina Cherkasova and Sergei Shakrai of the former Soviet Union.

@@lucillebonds4332 no? How are they jealous of her. It’s because she was so small. It’s was unusual back then for pair teams to have such a huge height difference. She was just smaller than most. Even in her book she says rhat

@muscleboi4use Totally agree. And I suspect given it was 1987 that the commentator (NOT Scott Hamiton) was harking back to his Cold War mentality when he made the 1 1/2 pair comment.

Replay toward the end of the clip shows that she's pre-rotated 1/4 turn before he actually releases her as she ascends, completing slightly more than 3 1/2 revolutions before he caught her.

  • @3Axel1996
    @3Axel199612 жыл бұрын

That wasn't the case; otherwise, Scott would not have booked them for his Stars on Ice tour beginning with the Fall of 1990, after G&G first turned professional. By 1994, he was just too biased in favor of them.

I guess, but that is still very annoying and patronising. I guess they were jealous they had no pairs like this one in Northern America. It is actually interesting to hear that, prior to becoming a great friend of theirs, Scott Hamilton was often making rather negative comments about G&G and their skating. Then, he became their greatest fan at the 1994 Olympics.
