GoPro - Singapore Airlines Cargo Ramp Agent POV at Chicago O'Hare Int'l Airport [01.27.2014]

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

PLEASE READ: if I were to type a description of this video, it would be very long and drawn-out, so please feel free to ask me any questions about my job and my responsibilities and I will answer them. Thanks!
NOTE: While I am an avid planespotter myself and love photographing and video-recording airplanes, I hope this video goes to show how hard us ground crews work to keep these aircraft flying. If I may add, it was -7°F ( approx. -21°C ) on this particular day with a windchill of -16°F ( approx -26°C ). While I was properly equipped with the appropriate clothing, facemasks, goggles, gloves, and boots, after a while the body begins to sweat and that sweat begins to freeze onto your skin. It's also not very easy to be doing a dangerous job in the extreme cold with new guys who are not used to the elements consistently complaining about it. You can't just tell them to go home, you need the help to maintain the plane on schedule and turn it around on time. I hope you all understand how fun, but how stressful, this awesome job can be.
As many of you know, I'm an employee at Chicago's O'Hare International / Int'l Airport ( ICAO = KORD / IATA = ORD ). I bought a GoPro HD Hero 3 White Edition camera on sale during my lu nch break on "Black Friday," the crazy sales event after Thanksgiving Day, and decided to wear it during my job offloading and loading cargo planes at the Southeast Air Cargo Ramp at O'Hare.
Here, the video starts with me marshaling in Singapore Airlines Cargo aircraft 9V-SFM, a Boeing 747-412/SCD ( cn 32898 / 1333 ) arriving as Singapore Airlines Cargo 7969 Heavy ( SIA7969 / SQC7969 / Singapore Airlines Cargo Flight 7969 / Singapore International Airlines Flight 7969 ) from Dallas - Fort Worth / Ft. Worth International / Int'l Airport ( KDFW / DFW ) in Texas by way of Hong Kong - Chep Lap Kok International / Int'l Airport in Southeast Asia with a fuel stop at Anchorage - Ted Stevens International / Int'l Airport ( PANC / ANC ). I was standing atop a JBT AeroTech Commander 30 aircraft cargo loader, or as some people call it, an elevator or bridge.
I stopped recording after offloading the rear belly of the aircraft because the front belly door wouldn't open. It was frozen shut from the extreme cold the aircraft had experienced during the flight from DFW to ORD! You can see me trying to get it open, but I gave up after several attempts because I could damage the locking mechanism and that would be very bad and potentially catastrophic to the structural integrity and pressurized interior of the aircraft during flight.

    Very Interesting Indeed. Always blows my mind why ground crew are so poorly paid and underappreciated. Without ground crew everything would grind to a halt. From marshaling, offloading, loading, GPU, ASU, HVAC, pushback, jetbridge (for pax aircraft), you all rock.

    I do like how you used the small baggage ramp instead of the huge one to open the cargo doors. I’ve seen a lot of planes just use a big ramp. They are pretty much wasting fuel... But you did it the good way. Nice job unloading this 747! Edit: On smaller planes they use small ramps due to cargo door size.

    Great video Bro. Fellow Ramp rat here. My base of operations is YEG International. You've inspired me to buy a action camera and film point of view video. It's hard to describe to non airport workers what exactly it is we do . It'll be fun to film Marshling, ULD off loading and loading, and finally push back from my TLD push out. Again mad props to you and the rest of your crew. Take care:)

  • @ChicagoAirportSpotter

    @ChicagoAirportSpotter

    Thank you! Yes, I agree. Not too much (or not enough!) footage from this perspective exists. And you're right, I did hold the X longer than usual. On a 747 or similar large aircraft, our rules were to wait until the engines are off as well as the red rotating beacon before setting the main gear wheel chocks. The nose gear chocks are set as soon as the aircraft stops. Then the pilots set the parking brake. Once the main gears are chocked, the mechanic can tell the pilots to release the parking brake and roll back onto the chocks and then set the P-brake again. I wait for the mechanic or one of my fellow ramp agents to signal me to pass that onto the pilots. That's what I did when I placed my wands parallel to each other.

    Must be interesting working at the worlds second busiest international airport. Working as ground crew seems like a big responsibility, ya know, ground crews are pretty much what makes it possible for you to get from the plane to the terminal safely and efficiently. Absolutely awesome. Other than being a commercial pilot this is literally my ideal job. I'm studying aviation at University in the UK at the moment and would FAR prefer to be doing this at Heathrow or Gatwick. This perspective shows just how personal, so to speak, you get with the aircraft and I can only imagine how sweet it must be to marshal in that 747. This may sound weird but this video has inspired me to apply for an airside job like this one this summer. Great video!

    First time I marshaled in a 747...it was one of the most incredible moments of my life. I've since done it with MD-11's, 777's, and 737's. You are correct that we do get very personal, in a way, with the aircraft when they are ours on the ground. It's the most satisfying feeling watching them take off once we're done with them. This job is not for everyone, it takes a certain kind of insane mentality to deal with the weather, schedules, and physical aspects, but I do recommend it to everyone who wants to try it out or who wants an aviation career. It's a great place to start off at the airport and get your feet wet. I myself am starting flight school soon, and I wish you the best in your endeavours. Cheers, and thanks for taking some time to watch this video!

    Thank you. Ever since day one at ORD throwing bags into Delta narrowbodies, I wanted to shoot something like this. The bad weather makes the job a whole lot more interesting, but I'd rather it be 120°F with 90% humidity than -20°F with a -50°F windchill. I have a couple more coming. I recorded dozens, but stuff goes wrong in most of them, so I won't upload those, lol.

    That things massive! I flew from O’Hare to Will Rogers in those tin can planes, an American Eagle. I also flew back, we hit a storm on the way to Oklahoma and had a terrifying landing. We then sat in the plane for a few hours waiting for the lightning to die down and to get pulled to the gate. It was just American Airline waiting too, Sprit got pulled in, United got pulled in. It wasn’t the best day I’ve ever had

    Doesn't T5 have a computer screen at the gates for marshaling in larger wide-bodies (Boeings and Airbuses) like they do at T3, T1, and T2 gates for American Airlines and United? Also, what contract company do the rampers worker for? Menzies, Swissport, Total Airport Service? I ask because I work as a Fleet Service Clerk/ramper with American Eagle Airlines/Envoy Airlines at T3, G gates. I never seen larger wide-bodies get marshaled in by human rampers because the planes are too tall. I've only seen American Eagle and United Express get marshaled in by human marshalers since the planes are small and short, ERJ-145, CRJ-700, CRJ-200, and EMB-175.
