GoPro Review: Official vs. Unofficial Jaws Flex Mount

GoPro has long been criticized for placing a premium price on products that are relatively inexpensive to produce. I never bought into this too much until learning a bit more about the company’s history and having expensive components fail multiple times.
While I LOVE the Hero5, the $50 Jaws Flex mount has broken TWICE in the two years that I’ve had it (without being put through any extreme handling).
I originally bought a cheap $11 “knockoff” from Amazon to use as parts to repair the mount, but then realized the quality was almost identical to the official mount.
THIS IS IN NO WAY A SPONSORED VIDEO, EVERYTHING WAS PAID FOR WITH MY OWN COLD HARD CASH. Here's an Amazon Affiliate link if you'd like to order for yourself and help support the channel:

    This is excatly what I was searching for. Nicely done, thanks! Like your humor, too :) THe ending is hilarious :D It would have been a 10/10 if you could have actually used the jaws theme there... I was actually curious about exactly this part that's breaking all the time because I was thinking it must be a terrible leverage on a tiny plastic thing. Do you think this would be strong enough for using it on the boom of a windsuring sail? I mean if it broke for you couple of times already...

  • @tombuck

    @tombuck

    If you search “GoPro Hero 4 Housing” in Amazon you’ll see options for either a waterproof case or just the frame that has the mount on the bottom. Usually they cost between $10 and $20

    GoPro sells the gooseneck as a separate accessory also. Much cheaper than buying the clamp+neck when only the quick release foot on the neck is broken. And there’s probably third party versions of the gooseneck available as well.

  • @jemand8462
    @jemand84622 жыл бұрын

    I bought the chinese one and it's really tough - but the clamp seems to be much stronger than what you're showing here. I can hadly open it with one hand, at least not more than an inch. It's both good and bad: it holds tightly on my windsurfing rig, even after rough crashes, but it's really hard to attach in the first place. So there seem to be differences in chinese versions, too.

    GoPro branded products are way too costly to purchase. After market brands come for one fourth the price that GoPro charges...the company needs to seriously look into this and rationalise their pricing. With the dollar becoming expensive, GoPro products are absurdly expensive in countries like India, which has a significant market for GoPro products.

    Dude, I got an unofficial clamp with a goose neck from Amazon for $24 and the clamp broke apart at the hinges (both hinges) after maybe 10 uses. Even though the design is the same the plastic is f*cking cheap. Don't tell your viewers to buy those cheap clamps because they don't last. I agree you can replace the goose neck with an aftermarket one because they're all the same.

    I built my own clamp by designing and 3d printing the receiver to the clip, mounting/gluing/bolting it to a nylon hardware spring clamp (like what you use to hold up photography backdrops) and buying a 3rd party gooseneck. At the time the 3rd party clamps didn't exist, so I saved myself about $40. For your part, you can have a replacement 3d printed if you already have a printer!
