GoPro: Orca Rescue in 4K

Спорт

The sixth and final of the HERO4: The Adventure of Life in 4K series.
Dr. Ingrid Visser dedicates her life and her research to help the most intelligent predator on earth - Orca. She swims with wild orca and advocates for modern solutions to release orcas from captivity.
Shot on location in New Zealand, this short film documents Ingrid's life mission to preserve wild orca through education & leading rescue missions to save orca from shallow waters & fishing line entanglements.
Includes never-before-seen footage of a GoPro mounted to the dorsal fin of a wild orca plus various archival footage and pictures from the Orca Research Trust.
Shot on the HERO2, HERO3, HERO3+, and HERO4® cameras from GoPro.com.

It's no wonder they attack in captivity. Theyre going mad. They are an extremely intelligent, highly social, family-oriented animal built for swimming vast distances in the open ocean and theyre being made to live out their existence in what is essentially the equivalent of a bath tub. Any intelligent being forced to live out its life in a box is going to eventually lose their mind. Ive been to Sea World once, and despite the scenic landscapes and designs, the music, the lights and the hype, it was the most depressing thing Id ever seen. Being an artist, I stayed to watch and sketch the orcas and dolphins between their "shows", and what I saw was a glimpse of the reality of their life. They were so lethargic and lifeless... dead inside. Many seemed to have the equivalent of a nervous tick. Bumping the walls over and over, swimming slowly in circles, or just floating idle with their nose to the wall. During the "shows" they were robotic... just sort of 'going through the motions'. Truly heartbreaking and I havent been back since.

Many of these whales were stolen from their moms and let me tell you the mother/infant bond in any animal is very strong. I had a toy poodle that was the best show dog and loved it so much. When she retired from her show career we tried to bred her to get another like her but unfortunately she had a difficult birth and the puppy died. The momma dog held that dead baby in her mouth for hours and cried, I finally said give me your baby and your human daddy will bury her for you, she dropped the puppy in my open hand and plunged her head into my armpit and literally sobbed loudly. Needless to say we all cried too. How can they get over losing their family. They may even hear them calling for them. My horse also lost her mother at age 40 and her daughter mourned and hung her head, wouldn’t greet us and stopped eating for a month.

6:03 that attack on the seal was incredible. The pod needed to first understand the physics involved, come up with the idea in situ, communicate the idea so that everyone is on the same page, and finally coordinate flawlessly to pull that off. That alone is a demonstration of intelligence comparable to our own.

It's kind of a weird statement tbh.. like why wouldn't a scientist at least consider the possibility that some animals may just have the ability to recognize individual humans?? like i know they're not sitting there thinking "oh that's my pet human Karen and her friend Barbara...." but still.

@@souffle01 Indeed, it has also been demonstrated that dolphins can recognize each other after decades of being apart. And come to think about it, if "animals" (because as @Arabella rightly points out, we fall under that label as well) could not recognize individual humans, how would a dog / owner bond work then? It would be quite hard to get such a thing to function if the dog didn't remember or recognize the human.

So amazing how at 11:56 you can see that the other orcas could’ve easily swam away and abandoned the one who was tangled. They weren’t tangled, they were free to leave and go hunt or something. Ingrid, I was very moved by this video, your shared knowledge, and your insights into Orcas. Those children benefited enormously as well, and will be forever changed due to your time with them. What a magnificent thing is your passion for Orcas. In the footage of the deep, I was moved to tears watching those giant animals being so gentle with you, and curious about knowing you, understanding you. I wish we could all do the same for them. I have worked with animal rescue since childhood and across continents. I love all animals. I discovered scuba diving and this was an epiphany! There is so much more in the ocean than on land. So much more beauty, diversity of plant and fish, incredible colors, textures, forms, and the silence speaking volumes. I have hope that we will grow as humans and be able to appreciate these animals in their full glory. Our knowledge and values of most things is entirely deficient, wrong, and the opposite of what is. I have discarded most of what was taught to me and embraced my own experiences and inductive knowledge of what really is. Snakes for one. Snakes are so misunderstood. They are gentle and sweet, and love to cuddle. But every source from the Bible to Walt Disney makes snakes the bad guys to be feared. The only animal to be feared is the human being. With videos like yours, we can educate, inform, change minds and values, and save the planet. Thank you profoundly for this gift.

Unfortunately, it has always been a facet of the human mentality that we can do anything with any other animal species, whether for food, sport, or merely entertainment. There are those who still feel strongly in that direction. Fortunately, there is now a strong tide leading in another direction, that of respecting other inhabitants of the earth instead of treating them as playthings. I certainly agree that this video is all the more powerful for being a view of Dr. Visser, living a life of purpose.

Sadly, someone rationalized it because they saw it as an opportunity to make money. I think that's why her statement at the end is so important. If enough of us refuse to buy a ticket, and it no longer becomes profitable to put orcas in captivity, then the odds of them being freed grow much higher.

I believe a lot have people have seen whales in captivity (including myself) because they want to see them and think they are being looked after. I visited Sea World Orlando and swam with dolphins at discovery cove. When I started to be educated about their conditions and how oblivious I was, an enormous amount of guilt clouded around me! I told myself that it's happened now, but now just pass the education forward and reduce/hopefully eliminate the ticket sales. I am doing the same and seeing them in the wild. Kayaking in Canada is on the top of my list!

@@kennyboyle700 I like to think that people still get inspired by the orcas in captivity and leave with a new understanding and fascination with them. All the wows and woahs and laughing shows that people are enjoying it at least and will take away happy memories that they paid for. A shame for the orcas themselves, but it has helped shape the public's eye into loving orcas rather than dreading and fearing them like in old times. Before orcas in captivity were common, they were sea monsters. Now they are lovable symbols of fun and entertainment at least

It's a shame that such intelligent animals are kept in captivity. I'm sure they're fantastic to see, but I'd MUCH rather see one in the wild and know that it is interacting with me by choice, than to see one in a cage at a place like sea world. We can make this change, just don't patronize zoos or aquariums where they keep these types of animals. If it's not profitable, they will stop doing it. It's clear that these animals are FAR more intelligent than humans give them credit for. I don't think we should cage them for our own entertainment, it just seems wrong.

  • @carlosrojo1556

Captivity is bad for any animal but science has learned a lot more because they are able to study these animals. I bet that we wouldn't know half the things we know about these creatures without studying them. Again I agree that captivity is bad for all animals but it also helps the research to keep these animals safe. We humans are very ignorant as a whole and I don't think people would care if some animals went extinct unless they saw it at a zoo and it said that we need to take care of these animals. It's not all black and white like orcas. To make a good argument you have to know both sides. Most people think that they know everything and that their opinion is valid above everyone else's opinion but you just have to consider both side of the argument.

Scott R I have seen them in both settings on a whale watching boat in Alaska, it was so exciting and fun timing when they would surface to breath and the sound was amazing. But the heartbreaking sight of them confined in those little pools is terrible. You immediately know it’s wrong. I went to see Winter the dolphin with the prosthetic tail. Granted she can’t be turned loose but the tiny pool she was in was like a fishbowl. She was on the bottom and we never saw her come up. I think she is depressed. I am appalled that the Japanese are so lazy that they go kill and eat whales. Why doesn’t the UN do something valuable like stopping the Japanese.

They are only angry in captivity. You will never see an Orca that feels safe in the wild try to kill you for the sake of just killing you. Unlike some animals. 5.) Thank you Dr. Visser for your tireless dedication and passion. Orcas are my 2nd favorite animal after the African Elephant, having them in captivity is ignominious and SeaWorld is an abomination. This is not right people, these creatures do not deserve this garbage and are suffering. The rapacity of human beings is disgusting at all levels but when you take a creature of supreme intelligence and emotional depth and put them outside their natural world with no space and away from their families it is a criminal act, no doubt about it. Who gave us the goddam right to take these wonderful animals away from their playground?? They are fking apex predators that thrive in all oceans and live with their families their entire lives, their bonds are much closer than human beings. Every single person who works at Seaworld should be put in a cage and treated like a circus act. How do you think they would like it? We have people like Dr. Visser that have taught us all we need to know about these special animals, SeaWorld isn't teaching us anything other than greed and repulsiveness. It is my opinion that anyone who poaches an elephant or buys Ivory from those elephants should be given the death penalty with no trial. PERIOD. It is my opinion that those who are selling slow lorises, taking them from the wild in Borneo, and keeping them as pets should be imprisoned with torture for LIFE. And finally it is my opinion that everyone who works at SW, is associated with SW, or buys a ticket to SW, should spend the rest of their lives in a cage slightly more luxurious than solitary confinement. It is our responsibility as human being to know what is going on at these aquarium parks. With the exception of young children who do not know every single person that goes to these Shamu shows should be caged and treated like a slave.

Yes, I have been to Marineland where they hold these whales in captivity, but seeing them perform in these tiny tanks has awoken me; now I'm dreaming of starting an Orca Sanctuary and studying them! This video is beyond fascinating and inspiring.

My family never had money to go to parks, but I always wanted to go to sea world. Never disney, never roller-coasters, I just wanted to see whales and marine animals so bad. Never got to go. Now I'm glad I wasn't able to. Now that I'm an adult I have learned to hate the concept of animals held in captivity when they don't need medical attention. Now the dream is to go on a whale watching trip to see wild whales.

Kaytie Buckhalt people always say we need zoos and aquariums so that people grow to love animals but you don’t have to see them like that to love them. Especially now when we have such amazing technology. Many people love animals and never get to see them

slone magyar exactly. When I was a kid, I had a book of animals, there were 90 pages, with around 4 animals on each, and even though I’d never actually seen any of them, i still loved them, and wished the best for them. Zoo teaches us that it’s okay to abuse animals.. it shouldn’t.. if we absolutely feel the need to have zoos, then it shouldn’t be where we come in, and see animals in captivity. It should be them roaming free, with us walking inside a cage, looking about at them, instead. If you want something, it shouldn’t benefit you only, and make another suffer. If you want something, then you have to suffer a bit too.

@@slonemagyar1034 What type of 'people' or person says that? Only people who have no empathy with animals would say such a thing, and frankly these people are not worth knowing.

Ingrid Visser is one of my favorite fellow countrypersons. Intelligent, humble, hard working and open. She's a fabulous teacher to young and old and she's the best ambassador for marine life this country has. A world class scientist, we are fortunate that her entire life is dedicated to these amazing animals. Instead of a fundraiser for a stupid exclusive wall, how about putting that sort of passion towards a sea sanctuary for captive orca?

Right, all lives matter not just the orcas... Except they live in the ocean and its more polluted than the sky not to mention that they are on the endangered list unlike your neighbor's goldfish.
