I love that you guys just go in on why it's good, what problems it has, and all that, because you appreciate [piece of gear] and want other people to have good gear too. I'm also amused that I'm here watching a GoPro review and considering buying one because a guy who talked about SQL injection on another channel I follow hosts a "quiz" show with 3 friends, one of whom made a Freddy Mercury thermometer, after doing some stuff on linguistics but before showing some quirky places throughout the world wherein he censored the Hollywood sign. And that's something you might not have known.
One geek explaining a new product to another geek is probably the best review ever. Please do this again!
"significant amounts of faffing about later" wasn't in rainbow comic sans?... how very disappointing :(
The look of sudden and total understanding when Tom says "It will be easier because it Linear" on Matt's face should tell you all you need to know about how hard video is most of the time.

If that lady was able to claim something that technically was not hers and you obliged, can I claim that GoPro 5 is mine?
This video features Tom unzipping -something- off screen, as well as Matt doing "Uppy Downy" movements on screen, and as such, is rated M for Mature.

Lindybeige did a video on that, why the English put R's between words that would otherwise meet vowel to vowel - it makes the pronunciation easier.
+Matt and Tom I know this is an odd question about the tone used for the bleeps when Matt talks. Had not given it much thought over the last 30+ years of watching TV and online videos, but the tone used is a standard tone. It's the same pitch more often than not. (And no, I'm too rusty to be playing "Name that Note".) Is there any special reason why it is used, or is it one of those, "Well, the editing panel used it, and since the panel was so popular, everyone copied them." kind of things. I don't know if there's enough there, but it might be worth a short video. Even if it just turns out that some engineer or designer picked the tone at random, and everyone copied them, a short video about how arbitrary decisions become an informal industry standard (like how all the computer cases in the 80's and 90's are tan) would still be interesting.
@ragnkja

The standard "bleep" is a 1000 Hz sine wave. I'm not sure if Tom picked the right frequency this time. He did not in the video about why they bleep some swears.
@jackielinde7568
7 жыл бұрын
But why is it a standard? That's my question. Is there a technical or legislative reason, or did someone just pluck it out of their butt as an answer to the question "What should we use to censor naughty talk?" BTW, looked up the tone, and it's somewhere between B5 and C6.
@ragnkja
7 жыл бұрын
Jack Linde Sounds about right, knowing that A4 is 440 Hz, which means A5 is 880 Hz.
@LeoMRogers
7 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, I'd say the reason for it being a high pitched sine wave is because that makes it sound deliberate, so people didn't think it was caused by something wrong with their speakers. As for why it would be 1000 specifically, probably just because its a round number in the range between high enough to sound deliberate and high enough to be uncomfortable.
@robburgess4556
7 жыл бұрын
1K might have been chosen because it's a standard tone used for checking levels, especially in video/TV. 20 or 30 years ago you might not have had a handy generator for 440Hz, but most gear could give you 1K.
This sells me on it, because I trust Tom and Matt: I know they're not selling me out, and that they're doing this because they like the tech, not for any other reason.
My HUGE question, Tom, is battery life. A GoPro 3 can get an hour and a half of 1080p video on a battery, add an hour with the battery pack. (Plus a few minutes but those are the easy guaranteed numbers.) What does the 5 get? I'm not upgrading the 3s/3+s we have at work until I know they'll last that long. (Wedding videographer.)
Cool, I just a got 5 the other week, my first ever GoPro and really like it as well. Don't worry about the lens cover removal, it's designed to simply twist off making it easy to replace if it ever gets scratched and as you mention to put it into the super-suit.
I'd suspect that the reason GoPro's linear lens correction is so much faster than Adobe Premiere's is because GoPro makes the cameras. Specifically, since they know what lenses they use, they can hard-code a lot of what needs to be done, which means they can make a hardware solution instead of a software one. The tradeoff between versatility (software) and speed (hardware) would make a hardware solution to this impractical (well, maybe it'd be okay on some high-grade graphics cards now that GoPros are so popular) on a computer, but the best way to make the fix in-camera.
Very useful practical information - I've been thinking about getting a Go Pro for a while, but had been swithering between the 4 and the 5. Very helpful :)
I come back to this video every couple of weeks purely for the "Significant amounts of faffing about later.." at 2:34, it always makes me crease up laughing, it may be the most British sentence ever

I got one of these, mainly because the voice control function, as novelty as it is, meant that me, a completely blind person, could film video quite easily, not to mention the app, which is close to being fully voiceover screen reader accessible.
Not sure if any one else has mentioned it, but the front lens is removable in part because GoPro designed it to be replaced, and they sell the replacements for $20 (not sure on your local pricing for that though)
That reaction to USB-C made me realize how old this was!
You are so trying to make this into a tech review stuff, for the free stuff. I fully support that decision!
Interesting. It's not in my budget range but this sure is an upgrade. I've been using an SJCam SJ4000 for over a year now as I never really saw the upside of a GoPro. Now, finally, they're doing some really unique and interesting stuff. Thanks for the review guys! Going to find the footage of the angry Python lady now :D.
i cut up an old iphone screen protector of my 3+ on the case lens to stop scratches and it works amazing as easy to remove in the field

Thinking about how Tom mimicked throwing a drone up reminded me of the rare occasions that you see Manhacks being deployed in Half Life 2. Maybe they could be made a reality in the future and if so, oooh damn.
If you want to spend under £100 the sjcam m20 does image stabilisation and in camera lens correction too, Its a great cheap cam and something I'm happy with risking as its quite cheap
Unbox therapy did a review on the folding drone you were talking about. It seemed very cool
there is one of those throw drones but you need to wear a control thing before it starts tracking you (i believe)

really nice image quality in this video
Hero 4 got Linear mode as a firmware update, so not such a huge reason to upgrade anymore.
Talking about registering a device before you can use it.. I bought a Samsung Gear S2 watch, before you can even look at the time, you need to register it to a phone. Problem I had was my Samsung phone was rooted and the Gear app refused to run on a Knox tripped device, so I basically had a completely non-functional watch.
Woah woah, a GoPro filming in log??? That’s amazing!!!
what is the battery life like. can you opomise by turning off touchscreen ?
It may be able to do the lens correction with less processor use because the exact lens is known.
Matt and Tom would you still recommend upgrading from a 4black, now there's a firmware update for it, to also be able to do the linear function?
What's the battery life like when you enable the fancy processing features?

is wind stabilization to mono or stereo?
@OrigamiMarie
7 жыл бұрын
It sounded like there was kind of an either/or, when they were talking about it. Either you get stereo whatever-each-mic-picks-up, or you get mono but corrected for wind. Probably because after all the math on the three mics, it can only get one good audio stream.
Why do you keep going on about 30fps in USA, but 25fps in europe? Why does it matter?
@AlRoderick

KZread search "Tom Scott frame rate", he explains why having a shutter speed that matches the local power grid AC frequency matters. It's actually pretty cool.
@IstasPumaNevada
7 жыл бұрын
Standard TV framerates differ primarily because US/Canada/Mexico/some others use 60hz for their AC power, and almost all of non-Americas use 50hz. Power frequency being easily divisible by framerate was initially to do with how TV recording/broadcast functioned, and still has relevance because (a) established standards, and (b) things lit by stuff like LED lights on AC power will flicker if your framerate isn't synced to the power.
@thewolfofthestars1847
7 жыл бұрын
It's so that the FPS syncs up to the power line pulses or something like that. I think Tom did a video explaining it on his channel with a video on iPhones.
@danielplusben
7 жыл бұрын
TheWolfOfTheStars PAL (25 FPS) and NTSC (30 FPS) are actually colour formats, and were how the colour picture was broadcast on analogue TV. The formats have stuck with us until today when everything is digital. PAL is better for analogue broadcast. NTSC is prone to artifacts and bad colour if the signal is weak. Each has a frame rate of half the power supply AC frequency. It helps everything stay in synchronisation. Simple PAL devices like DVD players will show either PAL or NTSC but NTSC DVD players will only show NTSC normally. These colour formats are often confused with DVD regions, but they are completely different. Any PC will decode both. NTSC uses a slightly higher frame rate, normally 29.97.
I just use Defishr to preprocess the video from the GoPro. It is significantly faster than Premiere Pro, and only $79
I genuinely wonder what the point of the GoPro is compared to every other camera on the market. Is it just supposed to be more rugged for EXTREME videos? Is that it?
