    If you start at sunset that part of the night lapse will be entirely white due to the lighting being too bright for that much of an open shutter. However, you can do a day to night time lapse or night to day time lapse by using the settings I outline in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnl-rayHlbXAZNI.html You mainly need to adjust the ISO, interval, and shutter settings to accommodate this.

The battery pack I use is not necessarily waterproof so if I know it’s going to rain I do something like wrap it up in something that will keep the water out such as a ziplock with a hole to run the cable through. Waterproof battery packs do exist and are also an option. I just don’t own one yet.

    I appreciate your feedback. If it’s an older iPad or a lower-spec iPad it may be because it cannot keep up with the quality of the footage. I’ve had some devices stutter like this before. If the video is in the HEVC codec that is especially common to see it look like this. HEVC is especially hard on older or lower spec devices. I recommend trying to view it on a different device and see if it plays back smoother there.

    Thank you and great question. If you use the Anker power bank I use, or most of the other Anker-branded power banks you can leave the battery in and it will work great. On the latest firmware version the Anker power banks work great with the GoPro Hero 10. The reason for issues with power banks on the GoPro seems to be that many of the brands other than Anker do not provide sufficient amperage or voltage to properly power the GoPro. I have found that the GoPro Hero 10 works properly with the Anker power bank whether the battery is installed or not. I prefer to keep the battery installed so that I still have a few extra hours of record time during a time lapse if my external power bank runs out.

    Does night lapse mode work with the Max Lens Mod? Also, why did you choose flat color instead of the new natural color profile? Seems like a lot of youtube videos I’ve seen say that the natural color profile is pretty good (while not under or over saturating the images.)

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    2 жыл бұрын

    You could theoretically use the Max Lens Mod but it only supports up to 2.7K resolution which would be significantly lower resolution than the 4K offered through the standard GoPro lens for a night lapse. Shooting a night lapse in flat gives maximum control over editing the RAW photos for the finished product. You could shoot in natural for the video mode but there is a risk of natural not handling the subtle colors in the sky correctly at night time. As always I encourage people to experiment further and see what they like best.

    @@GreatDayForAHike It would be nice if they included some built-in mode like other action cameras. The Nikon models are nearly foolproof, I just select sunset mode or party mode or fireworks mode (it automatically dynamically adjust contract so the sky is darker but the fireworks are vibrant) or daytime landscape, night landscape mode, portrait mode, 4 different underwater modes, etc. So much smarter then these brainless GoPros where you are constantly adjusting them to make them work correctly. After a years of fiddling you may eventually creates modes that almost work.

    @@GreatDayForAHike Nice that you've had no issues. Do you know why? Asking this becouse normally dew/frost is a major issue shooting timelapses at night, and people regularly use heating strips on their objectives. Do you think GoPro heats up that bit when shooting timelapses or if the conditions just have been so favorable on your occasions? I think it’s mostly that conditions have been favorable for me. The camera does stay a bit warm when shooting and this may be part of the reason as well. I expect if it gets cold enough the camera would freeze up. I just am not sure what that temperature would be. The question of how cold is too cold.

  • @apahualpa173

    @apahualpa173

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@GreatDayForAHike Right. If the camera, including the lens, stays warm enough then there's no problem. And the humidity level certainly plays a major role beside temp. So there's no exact temperature which is too cold but it's rather about the combination of the factors. It will be interesting to try and see once I get the GoPro purchased and get to testing. It's now getting cold here in the northern Finland, tonight being the coldest so far for this winter with some -10'C in my area.

    How do you keep few or frost off of your lens??

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. I have found that having the GoPro powered on and the GoPro taking a photo every 15 or 30 seconds creates enough of a heat dome around the camera that frost will not form on it. I’ve tested it recently in some cold, frosty nights and it has stayed nice and clear. With few, I find the hydrophobic lens sheds this pretty well. Occasionally if it is a really humid overnight some drops will sit on the lens for a bit but typically they will slide right off within a few minutes and not obstruct many of the frames that make up the time lapse.

    Really confused with the Sharpness - Low or Medium for Video? In another video you said Medium :/ And same thing with Interval, here you have mentioned Auto but in the other video (Day to Night) you said 15s and Shutter Auto

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    Жыл бұрын

    It’s because some of these settings are different for a time lapse that is day to night or entirely a night lapse. For a night lapse that is entirely night you can technically do low or medium but low generally gives best results. Interval depends on if that is being used to determine the interval between each photo or if the shutter speed is being used. Anything other than an interval of auto will control the time between each frame. Interval of auto gives control between each frame to the shutter speed. These precise settings are different in night to day situations vs a time lapse that is entirely a night lapse.

    Use low for everything! Same for a TV setting, it just introduces artifact. Use software, it can take it time (since it does not need to operate in realtime) and do it correctly of you think you need some.

    If you let it sit there for a bit as long as it is still recording it should get to 0:01 and then 0:02, etc but if you are shooting with a 30 second interval it will take 15 minutes of real time with each 30 second image to equal 1 second of a night lapse image because each individual shot is one frame and it will take 30 frames to equal 1 second of video.

    If you were to submerge the camera in water then it would no longer be waterproof but if you have it plugged in with the USB-c power cable and sitting on a tripod doing a night lapse it is “waterproof” if it rains or snows because water cannot get into that USB-c port opening due to the cable filling it and sealing it off.

However, when working in certain lighting situations such as the darkness of night with a little light while holding a camera in one hand and moving tripods and other gear with the other hand, keeping the video in focus is not so basic LOL In addition, letting elements come into focus is an artistic effect sometimes.
