    thank you so much for this in depth process, I really enjoyed it. I have just ordered a GoPro to try and take night lapse from my high rise in NYC against Brooklyn Skyline and I am thinking if you can recommend me about what shutter time and ISO when shooting a night lapse against a skyline? Later I would also like to take photos more slowly and for all of winter but maybe 1 photo every 5min. But then I must totally change shutter speed and ISO for it to work between night and day, or is that something that is possible to schedule, so depending on time it uses a special setting? I guess that feature is not available :)

    Really great video - especially since you even take us through the past processing. I only face one issue with the TimeLapse in the end - when I run the video the brighter corner (there is a city nearby) start to flicker which is really not lookin nice - Do you have an idea where this is coming from? and what could I do, to avoid this flickering? (Settings RAW Picture as you recommended in this video 20secs at ISO 400) Thanks

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    21 күн бұрын

    Thank you. Unfortunately, there will be some flicker in time lapses due to a few different factors sometimes. Rapidly changing lighting conditions or a bright part of the frame relative to a dark part of the frame can also cause this flicker. Several types of artificial lighting can also cause flicker. There are some tools out there that can help resolve this issue in time lapses but they have a bit of a cost.

I only use a cell phone to edit my videos and photos in the quik app. I know that 6 gigs of Ram is not enough. When I make videos in 5k/30... I don't see the image on my cell phone... only the audio comes out. On the Gopro, the image and audio come out perfect. I would like to know which notebook I should buy to edit my 5k videos and what size of memory I should have in order not to crash. Can a friend help me? Alexandre Manzoli BRAZIL

    Hello: I have been following your Night lapse directions with my new Hero 10, but I have a couple of questions; What is the largest SD card that the Hero 10 will handle? I ask this as my camera seems to overwrite files. What format should I use to format the card, and is there a setting somewhere in the camera to prevent this? Or, is it possible to have the camera just shut off or stop filming when the card is full? I cannot go nearly all night...I am using the Anker power bank that you recommend. The camera is taking beautiful photos, just not enough of them! Thanks for your excellent channel!

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    Жыл бұрын

    All great questions. The Hero 10 can support up to a 512GB MicroSD card. The recommend cards are listed here by GoPro: community.gopro.com/s/article/microSD-Card-Considerations?language=en_US It is recommended to always format the MicroSD card in the GoPro. Just make sure you have all files off the card first that you want as formatting will erase all data on the MicroSD card. The camera should stop filming when it is full. If data is being overwritten on your card by the GoPro then this card could have some type of hardware problem. Thank you for your feedback and support!

    Love your videos! Question though, why set interval to auto? In the beginning of your instruction you direct us to set it to auto. Later, when you start your editing, you mention the interval being set to 30sec vs 15sec for space saving and storage card capacity. So is auto better or setting a 15/30sec interval? Thanks!

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    Жыл бұрын

    I appreciate your feedback and great question. I should have been a bit more clear on this when using that interchangeably. If you set the shutter speed to 15s and the interval to auto the GoPro will automatically default to a 15s interval. With a 30s shutter speed and an interval of auto it will default to 30 seconds. Therefore interval is not needed in those situations unless there is a situation where one does not want the shutter speed and interval to match which usually will be for daytime time lapses only. However, if one wanted to do a 15s shutter speed with a 30s interval that would be fine, but a shutter speed of 30s and an interval of 15s would not work due to the shutter speed being longer than the interval.

  • @jesseboyle2263

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your feedback! Great question. So firstly, I have never had any of the GoPros I own overheat to the point that they turn off except one of them where I purposely set it up to fail in conditions that would cause it to overheat and power off. In normal usage such as this I have had zero overheating issues. With time lapses the camera is capturing one frame every few seconds or in the case of a night lapse one frame every 15 or 30 seconds in most cases. A GoPro should not ever overheat to the point of turning off during a time lapse or night lapse because this is a very light workload for the camera.

What would you suggest to correct this? I've got the video uploaded to my channel (Its Video Format, but Picture format was doing the same with the moon)

    You can bump your ISO down to 400 and set your shutter speed a bit lower. 5 or 10 seconds for instance. This will help the moon look better but you will not capture many stars due to these being features in the sky with less light than the moon. However, if the moon is the focus of your night lapse and you want to capture the moon with proper exposure then try the settings I mentioned above.

    So I have the ISO Min: 400 & Max: 800 but the shutter was set to 15secs. I'll drop the shutter down to 5 secs tonight in photo mode and see how that turns out. Thank you for the quick reply.

    Sounds good. Yes, doing a night lapse with the moon in the sky can be rather challenging lighting to work with and I have found it does require plenty of experimentation depending on the result you want.

    This would largely depend on the specific location and how bright or subtle the appearance of the northern lights are at that location. In general these settings should translate well to capturing northern lights, especially the RAW photo mode settings.

    Having a bit of trouble... I took 405 photos with the same exact settings. Edited everything fine in Lightroom, exported as JPG, etc. When I import into premiere pro, my sequence is less than a second. Super quick. I followed everything, made sure I chose image sequence etc., and verified that the folder selected had 405 photos, which it did. Maybe I'll restart all over again, but I expected at least half the time duration you got for your clip!

    I think I might know a possible solution. Do your file names cross a 1,000 increment at any point in their naming? Ex: 1997.jpg, 1998.jpg, 1999.jpg, and then 2001.jpg. The naming convention when capturing these on GoPro will usually skip anything ending in at least three zeros. So what you have to do is go back and import the additional photos starting with the file that starts the next sequence. You can then place this second batch on the timeline next to the first batch for a continuous sequence.

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    You do not need a special charger adapter. The USB cable that comes with it connects to the GoPro to output power and then when you need to charge the power bank you plug it into a computer or a wall charger with a USB port. It’s really quite convenient.

    What are your thoughts on using the Volta as the power source for a night lapse?

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    Жыл бұрын

    The Volta is a good option for a power source. If the Volta is fully charged along with a battery inside the GoPro that is fully charged this combination should last for most of the night provided outdoor temperatures are not too cold. Also, be aware of the weather as the Volta is not waterproof, but should be able to handle some moisture.

  • @GreatDayForAHike

    @GreatDayForAHike

    This is a great question. I have tested these settings-and many variants of them-with the Action 4 and found the Action 4 to not get even close to as good of results as night lapses from the GoPro. I believe this is because of the way in which the Action 4 handles RAW photos and the megapixel factor. The Action 4 night lapses lack a lot of detail and do not seem to pick up on many celestial objects with the exception of the very brightest stars/planets. For night lapses, the GoPro is my go to action camera.

    Hello! I need some help.. Why my timelapses and videos has lower contrast and saturation after exporting the final result in Premiere Pro? On the preview video looks fine, but after exporting it, loses a bit of contrast and saturation. I could show you an example but I can't send photos and videos here, u fortunately. I saved 2-3 pics from a 300 pics timelapse, just to see the color and contrast difference, and it's a big difference. The photos , I edited them in Capture One, exported them in full resolution because I want a 4K timelapse, than I imported all the images in a "image sequence" , on the preview video looked fine, but after exporting the final video, and opened it, looks less saturated and the contrast is much lower. Do you know what the problem can be? Thanks!

    There are a few different possibilities here. The first one that comes to mind is the bitrate you exported the finished product with may not be high enough. I recommend a bitrate of at least 50mbps for a 4K video.

    @@GreatDayForAHike Now you will be surprised haha. I export them in full quality. What I mean by full quality: Maximum render quality and maximum encode quality checked (I don't know if it helps, please tell me if is worth it to check those boxes) , I export the videos in CBR and the bitrate is set to 200 bitrates. I searched the problem on youtube, and I got a LUT file which fixes the gamma of the video. And in the premiere pro settings, the Color Display......(I don't remember the full name lol) was unchecked, so I checked that one as well and now looks fine. But after transfering the video to my phone, looks different tho.
