    For that I usually use wide-angle. It deforms the corners of the footage but at least you can see something in a tight space! And use lights, just not too bright so you don't blow out the image.

    Great explanation! How would these settings change when shooting exclusively in caves -- low light, usually only a couple beams from the primary torches?

  • @DiveSAGA

    For me they would be largely unchanged but the use of lights would matter much more. We'll talk about the use of video lights in one of our upcoming videos so make sure you follow along!

    If I want to do post editing shouldnt I use the log profile? That way I use real 10 bit and I get way more color depth and the image is not processed by the camera that much. Am I thinking right? Also if you want more cinematic movement you should set your shutter speed to double the frame rate. In low light is better to shoot ate 30fps so you can lower the shutter speed to 1/60 and get more light to the sensor. But great video! It helped me understand gopro a little bit better, since i came from the dslr world and just got my first gopro :)

  • @DiveSAGA

    @DiveSAGA

    From my understanding the "Log" profile isn't really log like you'd know it from the professional world but just a baked-in low contrast image, if that makes sense. I definitely prefer to shoot 60fps or higher as well!

    You mentioned that you Normal is your preference over HDR if you are planning on post editing, and HDR is better if you are just planning on getting it out without as much color correction. That sounds backwards to me. Shouldn't having a high dynamic range, 10 bit color, give you more flexibility editing post since you have a larger color space to work with when mapping it back down to non-HDR 8 bit color for display or publish? I just upgraded my Hero 7 Black to a 12, specifically for the HDR and battery life for diving. I really enjoyed the detail you gave for why you choose each setting and making it fit what you are working with or trying to achieve

  • @DiveSAGA

    @DiveSAGA

    To my knowledge, what they label as “HDR”, this is not a real HDR preset and instead composits a high exposure and low exposure together as a processed Standard Dynamic Range video. So it's "baked in" and you lose access to the different, separate exposures later, if you know what I mean. This is similar to the “HDR” photo setting on smartphones etc which also isn't real HDR.

    @@DiveSAGA Thanks for getting back. I will do more research and let you know what I find out. After an initial investigation, I think that it the GP12 is doing actual HDR, but you are correct that for most underwater capture, it does not give better results because the dynamic range is compressed far in the lower range whereas HDR works best when the range is quite large from the blacks to high intensity whites. Thanks again. I will let you know what I find after some experimentation at depth

    Do you use filters? (red) Or do you do the color correction afterwards using software?

  • @DiveSAGA

    @DiveSAGA

    4 ай бұрын

    I don't use filters because they take away a lot of light in general. GoPro does have a bit of Automatic white balance which helps. You can also use lights and then you don't need filters!
