All fair points. I love mine to death and couldn't be more satisfied overall with it. Honestly, I like being able to use the front screen for most things, FUNCTIONALLY, and have the inner screen when I need more space for videos, pages, or documents. To me, that's all I really need to be super happy with it. I also like the ease of multitasking on it on the inner screen when I need it, too, with the default landscape ratio. I am happy to be there for Google to show there is demand for their foldable. I look forward to their future foldables giving us even more great things. I do feel that the software needs to be more capable. It needs to do more. That's what I miss from my Z Fold but I DO NOT miss that front screen form factor. 🤢

How does it compare to the Samsung Fold 4 (or 5) on the inside screen layout? I also have a pixel fold and found some awkward website layouts with the pixel fold, but curious if Samsung does it better on their Fold models. This seems like an easy problem to solve, my Chromebook can adjust layouts easily and my wife's Chromebook though having a different aspect ratio still looks great. I think it's an adaptation thing in the software. For example, some sites are a great experience, I really like how it lays out Amazon. The biggest missing feature in my opinion is a Dex like offering. Phones in our day and age are very capable and could be a single device option. Desktop, laptop, and mobile computer if they are given the compatibility and capability.

My experience exactly! But I’m gonna ride with it. My main phone is an iPhone and my second phone is usually the top of the line Pixel. I love the Fold for content creation/consumption. I hope Google and developers get some more functionality for it. I do understand your complaints. I don’t mind the crease or the slight bend when it’s open, it’s the app support that I’m hoping gets better.

I really like the external screen form factor on the fold and wish they just made a regular phone with that exact size. I find that the big screen isn't to be used a lot. small screens are more convenient. the advantage here imo is to be a le to have thé big screen sometimes (movies, some specific websites f.e.) and the small screen most of the time. if the plan is to use it as a folding tablet I'd agree this doesn't work that well, but I don't know many who really use tablets in reality. I'm sure the little browser bugs will be fixed otherwise. as for the price... can't disagree there. I see why it's expensive but I don't think it's great value

I owned the four previous z-folds. I chose this one over the next one that's coming out because of the cover screen which is just great. Something that the z-fold does not have and it still had the same app problem. So I've gained a better front screen and it's the same price. And that is my opinion.

I love Outlook and Gmail on my Fold's big internal screen, as well as photo editing (so much better than a standard phone screen). I have a Surface Duo and I hated that device as a daily driver (mainly I think because there's no cover screen). I kept it around for football season watching Sunday ticket on one screen and my live update pool on the other in "laptop mode" when out with friends at brunch, but that was the only thing it was good for. For me the Fold is the future and works now for most of my use cases, and when it doesn't the cover screen is fantastic. I came from a Sony Xperia 1 Mk III and didn't realize how much I missed all the Pixel touches from my previous Pixels 1 through 4, happy to be back in the Pixel "fold" 😉 Plus I love the smaller (albeit not thinner) form factor when folded over all the "tall" phones like my Xperia and the Pro/Max devices.

I have to say that you actually can easily switch Play Books into the book-style column layout. I had to dig around online to figure it out. You basically have to partially fold the screen and it will auto-activate. That does mean that you have to hold the phone partially closed, so that's up to you if you like that or not. Its meant to feel more like holding an actual book. I actually don't mind it, but others might not like it. But I thought I'd mention it since you said you had to change settings on yours. 10:30

Use cases matter - watching video while translating words you don't know and transcribing without blocking the video - using desktop web apps, like admin panels and Replit/Stackblitz - bigger viewfinder for taking pictures with your arm fully stretched... Like over a crowd at a concert - watch video while web browsing. The video is full size when portrait unfolded. - vertical unfolded allows charging without a cable in the way - remote camera shutter is great as it has a built-in kickstand, adjustable camera - tent mode is great for video - it's a complete replacement for my 9.7” tablet... I literally haven't touched it In response to his issues: - go vertical for reading - there are goofy problems. Other issues he didn't mention: - not being able to go 180° is dumb - live transcribe is forced to be in the middle, and it's not resizeable - the gesture bar is absolutely huge and not configurable

I've been using a "phablet" phone since the Note 3 and love that style of phone. I really like the idea of a folding phone, having perhaps a slightly less unwieldy screen normally and then being able to open it up to an even bigger screen than even a "phablet" could have. However, with some of the software and even hardware (such as the visible crease) issues still present, and with the inner screen on these folding phones not being THAT much larger than a "phablet" and the "phablets" not being too unwieldy, I feel it still isn't worth the price for these folding phones yet. Maybe if they were the same price as the "phablets" it would be worth it, but for now I think the "phablets" have struck the best balance between portability and a larger screen size. I can see maybe one day the folding phones rivaling them, but not until more of the issues are ironed out and the price drops.

Yes, fair review from a non-foldable person. Folds like this are very niche with less than 0.4% of the yearly smartphone sales it clearly is not for everyone, the price being the main barrier to entry. From the stop-start Android tablet story it has always been about the lack of dev support versus iPadOS, and sadly, the current chapter still runs with that narrative. Hopefully, with Android 14 and the scaling API we will get apps that can fill the screen with good scaling rather than be stretched which is the Galaxy Fold solution. I am glad Google did not go the Samsung route as it likely means they will not settle on that poor compromise and hopefully have bigger and better plans in the making that will benefit all including the Galaxy Fold. As for the negatives, there are workarounds, though not perfect, and hopefully, the gyro will be fixed as that is a very simple bug. Like Samsung, I suspect that Google will have to implement a Pixel OS fix as devs are unlikely to fix it for a small niche market. As for the browser, an 8-inch display still looks better IMHO using a phone layout than a squished-up desktop mode. You can use progressive web apps for full-screen apps and turning between portrait and landscape is easy for optimised layouts, that has always been an advantage a tablet offer over most laptops, so that is not a negative on apps like TikTok or Instagram. For those that still have not bought into foldable's then the Pixel is unlikely to change their mind. But for those that have been wanting a more sensible design, then the Pixel means that they can enter the foldable space with a usable front display.

Here's the thing. People keep talking about the price but most people are going to get a pixel fold are already pixel users. I traded in my pixel 6 and I got $900 credit so really I'm only pay $900 and doing it through my cell carrier I only pay $25 a month. So the same that I was paying before for my pixel 6 on a 36-month plan.

Portrait orientation like zfold is better 1. Most apps we used are portrait apps which don't scale properly to landscape orientation. Even if Google came up with a full screen hack (like zfold) stretching these portrait apps to a landscape screen will look extremely horrible. Don't forget, current zfold full screen hack is to go fullscreen in portrait screen. 2. With pixel fold there is the hassle of needing to rotate the screen to portrait if you don't want half the screen area being wasted by letter boxing. Not to mention, the need to rotate again to close the fold. 3. Even those apps with having landscape view support are not always optimum either as the fold is not a 10 inch tablet. These landscape optimized apps use half the screen to display main content (which is less than what you get on a candy bar phone). Even the KZread app is better in portrait. It gives you a big size video on the top half and you can read comments below. In landscape view, video size is much smaller unless you go into fullscreen (which means you can't see comments at the same time). 4. When pixel fold screen is rotated to portrait (most usage scenario), having the crease on the horizontal is way MORE distracting than on vertical. When vertical content scrolls over the horizontal crease you will see the constant waviness/distortion which makes you feels like you gonna get seasick. And the horizontal crease will much more visible as the crease is at an angle to your eyes when you are holding the phone in portrait. 5. Even multi-window split view is worse than zfold. After deducting the status bar and app header and bottom bars, pixel fold has a short vertical area for content. In conclusion, Pixel fold sacrifices the inner screen and everything else for a SLIGHTLY better cover screen typing only. Totally stupid imo.

Samsung's software is what makes a foldable actually enjoyable to use. You don't get the same silly limitations that you see on the Pixel. "Cleaner" Android is limited Android. The stuff Samsung includes, by and large, serves to make the experience better.

Samsung just stretches the apps to fill the screen though they are trying, like with Instagram (and a mod) to make phone apps more like tablet apps, but sadly 99% of Android phone apps on the Fold are just stretched and look worse than having black bars. The reason Google hasn't used this fix, apart from it not looking nice, is that it will just make devs lazy and not bother making tablet-specific apps, and that would be a schoolboy error by Google. So instead, they have an API to improve scaling coming in Android 14 that will help the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Fold, so we won't have to see Galaxy Fold stretched apps soon!

So I switched from Folf 4 to Pixel Fold. And I have to say, I'm excited. Exactly as I suspected. I use the Google ecosystem completely. And not only privately, but also at work (G Suite). In addition to the premium hardware, it is a system that is overall smoother, better behaved in relation to Google applications. Direct integration of the camera and photos, selecting text and transferring fo email, that's something I missed in Samsung. Maybe Pixel phone users have had this experience before, it's new to me. The benefit is the option whenever you need a large internal display. Amazing.

Please, I'm not an objective reviewer like Robby. It's my subjective feeling. I have both devices in front of me now and I'm doing a comparison. Both devices are superb. Don't forget that we are comparing luxury rides in premium cars. Regarding the smooth operation of the system, I have the impression that the Pixel responds better to my gestures. I switched to gestures a long time ago, and when I swipe on the ZFold for the list of apps, the list doesn't always pop up immediately, as if it sometimes hesitates. Similarly, swiping to return to the previous app sometimes makes a dent to the side and the original app remains there. When I swipe on the list of applications on the Pixel, I can immediately select text from recognized images and immediately insert it into GMail. Yes, both devices have their own system to do similar functions. I have previously switched to Chrome from the Samsung Browser, GBoard keyboard, Keep notes, G Docs/Sheets, etc. I use the G Suite work profile. If I don't actually use the power of Samsung's ecosystem, Pixel started to make more sense to me. We have Apple at my work and unfortunately I have to say that this is exactly what I miss. Rivals like Samsung and Google (and other competition in different variants of phones and accessories). With Apple, users are waiting for what the manufacturer will allow them to do. They sit and when the manufacturer Apple does not allow them to use this and that cable, they wait. There is no competition. I don't like that at all. So take it as both devices living at the pinnacle of what can be bought in the phone space. And maybe next year I will speak differently 😀

I'd say a number of those issues are a result of software than hardware or form factor. Pixel Fold has a long way to catch up with Samsung... who still have work to do themselves. But a better software experience could fix a lot. Folding phones have a lot of potential. Even the current generation of hardware. It's predominantly a software problem.

I'm in the same boat. You're not really encouraged to open to the larger display and when you do the experience is, "meh." I knew that going in because android on a tablet is just bad, supposedly android 14 makes things easier for developers to create versions for the larger display. Even then, I just feel you're getting more out of the galaxy fold series as the software encourages use of the inner display. Another thing that reviewers never mention are the speakers. Having an iphone, the speakers are not loud at all on this thing.

That is not a good solution. However, Google is releasing a scaling API that will fix this in Android 14, so Google is trying, but devs still need to run that API and I expect that most will not bother, whereas on iPadOS the uptake would be manyfold higher.

Google themselves aren't doing it. They hard coded Gmail to only run the split pane view in landscape even if the actual viewport of the device is large. You can't move the centre divider, either, meaning you end up with a lot of wasted space. KZread *still* sucks at transitioning from cover screen to inner screen and vice versa resulting in UI bugs that can only be resolved by closing and re-opening the app. KZread Music has its own share of issues. Many examples of Google apps not following Android best practices.
