Goodyear DuraTrac vs BFGoodrich KO2: The Ultimate Hybrid Tire Battle! 🚘🔥
Dive deep into the world of hybrid tires as we pit the 10-year veteran, Goodyear DuraTrac, against the BFGoodrich KO2. Let's decode their designs, dig into their performance, and determine which tire reigns supreme.
Design Features:
The Goodyear DuraTrac, though around for over 10 years, still resembles mud tires due to its aggressive shoulders. However, the center remains all-terrain.
DuraTrac's shoulder blocks are staggered and feature wave-like siping. Additionally, they are pre-prepared for studs (in LT sizes).
Surprisingly, the DuraTrac doesn't have designated stone ejectors, unlike the BFG KO2.
The BFG KO2 has straight siping, while DuraTrac uses wave-like siping.
Both tires have differently designed sidewalls. KO2’s sidewall lugs cover a larger area, while DuraTrac's lugs are bulkier but cover less area.
The central area of the DuraTrac has an open design with square blocks. A key feature is its "Tractive-Groove technology" which includes smaller tread blocks in the wider grooves for better grip.
The BFG KO2, in contrast, has a compact design with hook-shaped blocks that interlock. It also has stone ejectors that are missing in the DuraTrac.
On-Road Performance:
Both tires perform well on the road.
The DuraTrac, despite its aggressive design, handles wet roads well.
The BFG KO2 tends to slip more on wet surfaces. As it wears down, the wet traction decreases due to its dual compound.
The BFG KO2 provides a quieter and more comfortable ride. The DuraTrac, being more aggressive, is louder, especially in load E ratings.
Off-Road Performance:
Both tires are 3pmsf rated, indicating their snow capability. The BFG KO2 performs better on light snow, while the DuraTrac, with its wider grooves, is better for deeper snow.
For muddy terrains, the DuraTrac is superior because of its wide grooves and "Tractive-Groove technology" which allows it to maintain grip.
On rocky terrains, both are competent, but the BFG KO2 has an edge due to its 3 ply sidewalls and stone ejectors, especially on gravel.

I've had both Duratrac and KO2 on my Sierra AT4..and I'll never go back to KO2's. I find the Duratracs better in the rain with less spinning on pavement. The Duratracs handle great in mud and snow as well without the annoying tire hum of aggressive mud terrains. 100% Duratrac fan.

@@c-hd5696 For me they are. I believe the larger tread blocks and larger voids on the Goodyear's are better for mud, but the vast majority of my travels are in and around the Great Divide/Rocky Mountains so I very rarely encounter deep mud. i worked pipelines in west texas and was a equipment hotshot driver in west texas oilfields. lots of sand, mud when it rains..sharp rocks, mesquite, and the 115 degree F temps. i had huge issues with tire punctures, or getting to about 3/4 tread and popping while hauling on rough lease roads etc. the ONLY all terrain i could run down to 2/32 was the bfg all terrains. i never had one flat, never popped, no issues. as i went through tires every month or so i tried every single brand to see which ones were the best. every single brand, from nitto, toyo, cooper, bridgestone, goodyear..they all had flats or would blow out prematurely. the cooper at3 blew out on me after 5k miles. one on the front at 5k and one on the back at 8k. if you want the toughest tire..bfg ko2 was the only one i could wear down to its designed end of life markers/bald with no issues.

Did you put on the exact same version of the Duratrac on both trucks? They come in different load ranges which can have an impact on ride and possibly noise. For example, load range E is a 10 ply rated tire typically found in LT sizes which are stiffer than P size tires. That said, it's possible Goodyear changed the tire in some way over the years but I don't know. I'd be interested to know if they have.

Duratrac vs KO2 is a long running debate. Very similar tires with slightly different use cases. I think there's a lot of confirmation bias in many people's opinions based on which one they bought. I don't think you can go wrong with either tire. Personally, I have only owned the Duratrac and am on my second set. In all honesty, my main reason for choosing them over the KO2 was the aggressive appearance. The reason I stayed with them is their outstanding winter performance and long tread life while being perfectly civilized on dry roads. I'd like to try the KO2 but it's hard to move away from something that I know works so well, especially since I have to live with that decision for a few years.

This was the video I’ve been looking for! I have a 2015 Ram 1500 and have had the Goodyear Duratracs on my truck for 3 years now. 285/70/17 on my leveled Ram. I live in Colorado and have used these tires on every terrain mud, rocks, snow, ice, slush, rain and sand. Best tire I’ve ever owned. I do get out and wheel quite a bit in the summertime and snowboard in the mountains in the winter. First year they were incredible, had to really get on it to drift in the snow. 2nd year still fantastic and just this past winter on year 3 and 50,000 miles I started noticing some slip on hard packed snow or slush. Still felt very confident in them though. These are also my daily driver tires. They still have quite a bit of tread left on them as I rotate every oil change check alignment every 6 months and balance wheels. They are getting noticeably louder now that they are a little worn down and tend to hum down the road on dry pavement but we’re very quiet brand new! They never hydroplaned until this past year either. I’m finally ready to get new tires and want to step up in size but Goodyear doesn’t carry the Duratracs in 285/75/17 or 305/70/17 which is really disappointing because I would buy them again no question. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the KO2 but they do carry the size I want so I might just try them. Thanks for the reviews!

I live in Quebec Canada with some terrible winters and the best is ko2 for the summer and duratrac for the winters, the duratracs wider pattern means less coverage over the width of the tire compared to the ko2 which means that unlike the ko2 at highway speeds it doesn’t tend to float and loose traction when getting a patch of slush and ice or heavy snow

From BC. Have ran both on our 2 XJs, 1 lifted & 1 stock, paved highwayd - fsr - old creek beds etc, mud, gravel, snow, ice ... etc etc. Came to same overall conclusion concerning these 2 tires. Both are great for base tires. Each a bit better per season. You're not an idiot picking either one. No harm in trying both. Personally I like the sidewall look of the K02 however on icy roads the Duratracs have been slightly less likely to float. Drive slower at times and it should all work out 😎

I love my Dura trac's on my first gen Tundra. Work very well in the snow. They are, of course, snow rated with the mountain and snow flake on the sidewall. In some states, this can be used in place of a "traction device" or chains during snow driving conditions where those devices are required. I bought those for use in Oregon because of this. They run very smooth on pavement and are quiet on my truck. The dura trac tire is a well thought out thread design. Not a lot of truck tires compare.

What was the tire pressure set at? When it comes to mud. Low PSI is better than higher PSI. KO2s generally don't perform as well as Duratrac in muddy condition due to them keeping the mud packed. Which is good for snow, but not mud. You want the tires to clean out the mud from the tread blocks. Not pack them in.

I'm currently in the market for a new set and keep debating between the two. On the one hand, I like that the BFG KO2 rides quieter and looks a little bit better (IMO). But on the other hand, I live in the NE and lots of reviewers have praised the snow-capability of the Duratrac's. I've never run either, but between these 2 and the Falken Wildpeaks, I don't think you can really go wrong. For me, I think I'm going to end up going the Duratrac route since I want the best possible traction in the snow/ice while driving around the NE during the winter. If I end up getting a set, I'll report back on how they work out. Thanks for the thorough review!

I have had both and both are very nice offroad. A bit of mud or soft snow are no problem and both have good grip on rocks. On the other side both are very, very, very bad on ice and not good in wet conditions onroad. I have had very scary moments with both of them in winter and I switched back to real winter tires after testing both for two winters. Another problem is, that both wearout quickly. After about 20.000 - 25.000 km both lost a lot of their profile and edges. The KO2 is heavier and thicker than the DuraTrac and on rocks I would trust the sidewalls more than the sidewalls of the DuraTrac. For me both tires work OK but both are not perfect and I'm not sure that I buy one of them again.

They abuse them to all get out and rarely have any issues, just wants new ones when they wear out. He puts them on all his trucks, he has Dodge and Chevy 3500 diesels. No matter what tire some one picks, others say it is not as good as the other tire. If you want to know which tire is better. Try looking at which tire Tires are compared to. If you look you will see the Dura-tracs are hardly ever compared top other tires. but all the other brands compare their tires with other brands, not against the Dura-Tracs. Manufacturers seem to compare with other newer model tires, since Dura-Tracs are 10 years old now. I have owned 3 sets of Dura-Tracs on my Range Rover classic. I recently changed the look of the tire and went with Toyo AT3's. The first test was in the sand. I ran the same tire pressure as always and the Toyo's under performed against the Wrangler Dura-Tracs. It was obvious from the moment I left the pavement. I haven't tried them on the snow yet or wet roads. But I will in the next few weeks. So far the Toyo's are maybe quieter, but since they are brand new I expect that.. I will post the results of the snow and mud and rainy roads. I feel that the Dura-Tracs are going to win. But I am keeping an open mind. Something everyone needs to understand. The cost of a fast wearing out tire. Make sure your bias has a long wear history and a stiff sidewall. I run 9 ply and a hard compound and nitro shocks. Yes my ride is stiffer but I get no chopping or cupping. And if you air down this will even work better. Something else to remember if you run your off road tires cold 3 pounds below its PSI rating your tire wear will be minimal on the street. If you fill your tires with Nitrogen it's inert gas. So you can run your tires at max.

I think a true all terrain tire should have on road manners when fully aired up but be more like a mild mud and rock grip when aired down and the tread spread out . Tire size and width should be vehicle size and weight along with in general use of whatever the driver may come across. Most all terrain tires are designed for pavement and dirt or gravel roads with some rocks and ruts .having an aggressive side wall will increase the capability in softer material as the side wall comes in contact with the trail .

  • @comparethetire

    @comparethetire

Your insights on what an all-terrain tire should offer are spot on. The balance between on-road manners and off-road capability is crucial, and sidewall design indeed plays a significant role in softer materials.

I have 31000 miles on a set of duratracs. I rotate them often and do not have any noise issues. I will probably get another set when these wear out. In my experience, KO2s’ tight tread pattern is completely awful at clearing mud, and they become terrible in the rain after like 20000 miles. I can see why people who live in SoCal or in the desert like them. Those are the only conditions I think KO2s excel in.
