About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

dude’s officially lost his integrity. it’s ok to believe that drum samples are killing music, it’s not ok to then turn around and pocket cash from a company selling a shitty sounding artificial bass plugin. like i get it, it’s hard to make money on youtube and not censor yourself, but if i had to choose between glenn keeping a consistent point of view in his reviews and glenn saying “fuck” a lot i would choose the fucking former.

Protip: this is how you get new song ideas. Record your bass player playing the original song for the first time. He will play it so badly, that it will be a totally different tune that comes out. Use that idea as a basis for your next song. Also works well if you ask him to try a cover song. Bonus points because what you get can't possibly count as copyright infringement, because it's nowhere near accurate.

@Derek Charette Some of these bands are exactly what I meant sorry ^^ I'm more into Sean Malone, Billy Gould, Alex Webster, Cliff Burton... Not saying you need to be a killer on bass, but just don't double track the guitars which sucks IMHO, it's possible to write real bass lines and find musicality (If Lars Ulrich doesn't come into the room during the mixing !). I should have better said I hate how most bassists in metal are just a human octaver for the guitarist ^^ (and I play guitar !) and that leads to that point when they can be replaced by midi programming without anyone noticing it if the plugin sounds good !

@@dirtyandnasty9011 Malone is very cool, Alian Caron, Robin Zielhorst, Shob, are all great bassists as well. The difference is the "bass player" vs the "bassist". I play 4, 5 string, about to get a mini 6 string acoustic, fretted and fretless, each of my basses have different strings, round and flat wound, Icreated an upright style bass out of a neck and some parts it works and is electric. I've burned the tips of my fingers off a million time, and love doing it. That's the difference.

Ok so this is my perspective as both a Bass player and as a long time computer nerd. This software suffers from an age old problem for any digitised version of an instrument other than synthesizers in that it sounds like it's being played at the bottom of a 44 gallon drum. It ends up having a tinny unnatural ring to the note especially at the attack end of the note and is especially noticeable when being played in fast succession. Fast played notes also show a failure on the tail end of a note in that there is an unnatural chop off rather than an ever so slightly imperfect muting of the string. No matter how good your muting technique is the string still has some natural vibration at the initial mute point. This is very similar to the problem faced by companies that produce Cymbal samples. For this to sound natural it has to be drowned in a mix so that the attack and overall waveform is not under direct scrutiny. Now as an authoring tool that's all well and good but as far as ending a player, no just as Superior Drummer and electronic kits are not great replacements for a good Drummer on a proper acoustic kit this has some flaws that make it still just a better version of older samples. Not a bad job overall but it is my hope that this doesn't end up being the next edrum/autotune degradation of music being produced for release.

Fun toy to play around with, but there just isn't any human element in it. This totally breaks my rule #0: "If there's no real bass player, there's no real band". I'm not writing this because I'm a hobby bass and keyboard player. I really like to see and hear bands performing. If we don't appreciate musicians anymore, one after another will be replaced. Eventually music will be generated, sold and owned by iTune. By the way, you got a great channel! 😎👍

Hi Glenn! I have a question and I did not find an answer so far: I am building a little studio right now in the basement. Ho do I get my cables from one room to the ohter without getting too much sound into the control-room? We will do a little break-through but I am afraid I will get too much sound through that hole in the end. We will use a 24-channel Presonus rack-interface for the recordings so we will only have a small network cable for this one. But I would also like to be able to play guitar in the control room while turning up the tube-amp in the recording room. What would be the best solution and how do you do that? Are patchbays usable for guitar-to -amp-connections, too? Thanks and many greetz from Germany! Max

@@wilhelmtheconquerer6214 I disagree with you. What makes a lot of modern music suck in my opinion is that it is uninspired, predictable and repetitive. While I do think that human performance isn't something that should be removed and thrown away for bands and actual performers, I believe that interesting songwriting is a better thing to strive for when it comes to bedroom producers. Of course if I can play it or have the capacity to hire someone to play the required part, I will do it, but I don't find it to be paramount at my level, especially in terms of time and budget, and I'm definitely not gonna wait until I'm proficient at all the required instruments before releasing music, fuck that. I'm not talking specifically about rock and metal specifically, but rather music in general. But hey if what you prefer is real performing musician, if that's what matters most to you and what you want to encourage, then great for you dude, more power to you.

After 30+ years of playing/gigging on guitar I switched to bass full time last year. I did play bass full time for a few years in the 90s in a jazz group of all things and quite enjoyed the experience. Had wanted to pick it up again but was always booked solid with gigs playing guitar. I've found over the years that no matter how much time and effort you put into your guitar playing. If the bass and drum are not on top things your band will sound bad. No matter what style. As I get older I find joy in making others sound good. Fixing problems they didn't even know they had! A bass player would should be an anchor. The person who never forgets the chord changes and song structure. Its easy to recover on guitar after flubbing a bit live. But when the bass screws up the entire band can go down in flames fast. One should never pick up a bass thinking its easier than guitar. p.s. I totally agree with Glenn on players who wont learn even the fundamentals of music. It can makes ones head hurt.

Not that it matters really, but it's definitely based on a P-bass, but I reckon more specifically it's Mark Hoppus's signature model; the sea foam green with the volume pot and no tone pot is a huge giveaway, and the name of the plugin itself would indicate that.

Honestly for metal tones I prefer the Loki bass plugin. It also has a key switch function and goes all the way down to an octave below drop C but everything below Drop F is a pitch bending effect muddying up the tone, so I wouldn't recommend it below Dropped 8 string standard because the half step drop for the E doesn't color the tone as much as it being shifted farther.

Very cool nonetheless, I wish I had this when I was making backing tracks for guitar performances in High School Guitar Class with midi drums. Certainly would of beat the clean guitar track tuned a whole octave down that's for sure. Awesome demo.

@@0x777 I use to play bass for a funk group, most fun ive ever had as a bassist(never been huge into playing jazz, just isn't fun too me). I don't think the feel and groove would be carried over very well. But i could be wrong. But if that is possible it might be hard to find bands as a bassist. They might just throw in an electronic bassist, but it'd be cool say if your a guitarist doing a funk track, your average guitarist isn't gonna have the chops on bass to do some of the funkier techniques, if you could create a funky bass track that sounds solid beneath your riffs, and get a good drum track going, you could do some killer things home recording wise.

Punk rock had some amazing bass players who were better musicians than everybody else in the band. Bruce Foxton, Dee Dee Ramone(he also wrote most of the Ramone's best songs), Klaus Flouride of the Dead Kennedys , Joe Lasurdo of Life Sentence, etc. As a bass player, I find Punk Bass sounds really good, and would work really well if you can't find a bass player.
