Good Riddance To Mainstream Media
Mainstream media is dying. The network evening news audience is in steady decline; the big three magazine publishers, Time Inc., Condé Nast and Hearst have all closed or consolidated titles; and the newspaper industry has been especially ravaged, with dailies folding across the country. Increasingly people get their news from the internet and from cable channels. Advertisers are moving on to Google and other non-traditional sources. Do these developments leave us better off? The democratization of news, in an unfiltered internet to which all bloggers and news aggregators have equal access, is a good thing. It encourages a diversity of voices, competing to provide information and analysis. Others argue that the public loses when traditional journalistic standards are no longer upheld, and where resources to investigate and report critical stories are no longer available. Can mainstream media re-invent itself to thrive in a digital age? Does it matter?

This needs to be re-debated. It's 2020.
The mainstream media has to protect the interests of the large companies and billionaires who pay for ads.
50% to 68% against the motion upon second voting debate.
I oppose the proposition not because I favour MSM but because that the more sources of information you can get the better.
Forget the main stream media. The straw that broke the camels back for me was them selling us the IRAQ WAR. Welcome online media!
Nobody addressed the elephant in the room. You know....the one with 'By Democrats for Democrats and people we want to think like Democrats' painted in bright red and green lettering along both its flanks.

I thought that red was the Republican colour.
More than a decade later and mainstream media isn't going anywhere. They are still around. I'm for both, they each have their pros and cons. Personally tho, i trust new media a little more. Democracy Now all the way!
Who does the MSM really represent?. Their corporate owners or the truth.?
i agree, i question the validity of the poll results on this show.
This debate has not aged well
Bronstein predicts Trump...
If the main stream media wants to survive it must do a lot better than any commercial drive can allow. We do need well supported professional media , but not if the funding causes it to prefer entertainment to real issues news. Media is so bought by small power groups I am pretty sure it needs a re boot. I dont agree the new media is better. We had old white men old media, now we have glib inexperienced shoddy work young, any color now.
the youth are certainly not the witness of the history but the witness of entertainment and celebrits culture. what could we expect from a young generation cares nothing but the their photos and love stories.

***** Why should be Trump's not for others?
What is worse about an elected government channelling money from the whole population to News Services with an independence charter, than news supplied by money from businesses who want a commercial and social result for their money ?
Is the alternative Cenk Uyger????
1h42m for the clip of David Carr from the excellent documentary Page One. No pun intended.
That guy from the NYT was funny
Andrew Breitbart would have been phenomenal arguing for the motion...
I find the discussion about "mainstream media" a misnomer. If they mean information is becoming digitized at a rate faster than the board of directors can facilitate thats true, but while most people no longer listen to radio for news or entertainment it still exists. They lost a generation by pandering to Boomers rather than revising things for isolated groups, what else is new. Bookstores are glorified coffee shops with libraries, why would the news be any different when you can read a blog with free wifi instead of paying a continuous subscription?

Vicki Wang Print news is not credible, yellow journalism started out as a condemnation of what is today called "mainstream media." Unless you want to live in a world run by nothing but PBS and C-span.

It is about quality not quantity. It doesn't take long to figure how commercially driven News is not the quality needed for democracy. If profitability decides if something is an issue or not it *cannot *work* If on occasions main stream commercial does work, it is not because it is the right issue to cover or how if it is always how much advertising will it bring.

Because writers' families need to eat, too.
Who are these loonies up here. I couldn't remember 1 thing any of them said in their rambles besides the radio host debater. I think that opening speech was the only thing I remember.
Somebody get Jim VandeHei a glass of water or one of those dentist suction tubes because the mouth noises he's making are driving me insane.

This is good stuff. Out with the old in with the new is old thinking. Transition not transformation seems to be the way. Enjoy
