Ойын-сауық

@Nellydoodlenoodle I enjoyed the adaptation slightly better too. And I'm usually quite the opposite. I'm usually "the book was better" kind of girl. My friend (who got me in GO) is the same. At first I thought it's because i saw the show first then read the book. I think it mostly had to do with aziraphale and crowley. Everything else I'm pretty much undecided between book and series but I like the series versions of the character a bit better and there was a bit more of them so there's that. It might just be the fact I read the book in Croatian (my mother tounge) and not English so maybe some word play or "spirit" of the book might get lost in translation (there is a factor of that with some other Pratchett's works I read in both languages). Anyways, amazing book, amazing series, love these characters, have been opsessed with GO for 5 months now and this comment is too long so I'm going to stop now.

I love the book so, so much. It's one of my favourite pieces of fiction of all time and a genuinely joyous experience... and I have to say I wouldn't pick a favourite either. The whole cast and Neil and all the others really, really perfected an adaptation of what was a truly fantastic work on its own. There are some things I'd have loved to see from the book, sure, but there are some things I'd love to have read from the show! Anathema, Newt in the modern day, Gabriel and God and the demons below and the absolute sweetness that Tennant and Sheen brought to one of my favourite fictional duos ever.... I could go on. It's not quite the same story, but it captures the heart better than any adaption I've ever seen. Part of me feels like I have to prefer the book because, well, Sir Terry Pratchett is my favourite author of all time for a really, really good list of reasons. But even then, the show has so, so much of his magic in it. Gaiman really, really went above and beyond; I could feel Terry's influence even in those scenes without any equivalents in the book. This man is not dead while his name is still spoken, and certainly not when he's writing through Neil to this day. Neil is the sort of person I'd trust to adapt the Discworld novels, or even Nation, and *that's* rare.

It had been years since I read the book and I'm rereading it now after watching the series and I was surprised by how many of the lines were from the book because they just felt so Right when the actors said them. There are often movie adaptions of books where they insert original lines but they don't sound natural but with good omens they really succeeded in that and I'm so happy!!

@Rebecca Woolf Definitely! I got both, at various times. The quirky absurdist zaniness of Addams in the matter-of-fact narration and the off-the-wall characters, and the academic looniness of Monty Python in some of the situations like the biblical eras ("Oi Shem! Totally agree with Hamm the "series" format worked perfectly - was like watching a great, long, rich, movie that is completely re-watchable. Amazon did good. And probably needless to say at this point, but Tennant and Sheen are incandescent in Good Omens. Beautiful shots, editing - a jewel of a production. Gaiman doesn't plan to make more, but really hope we see more of Aziraphale and Crowley - another 6 hours would be incredible!

@@TheShadowofDormin The mini-series actually goes on for a bit longer than the actual book. But.... MAJOR SPOILERS The crux of the whole story comes down to when everyone converges on the military base, Gabriel and Beelzebub show up, they talk about the "Great Plan", and Aziraphale asks them "But is that the same thing as the Ineffable Plan?" and when they dodge the question, Crowley realizes "You don't actually know!". Known of them ever knew. Then Satan shows up, and Adam reboots reality, which is what he was meant to do all along. Not by Satan, but by God. It's explained at the very beginning: God does not play dice with the universe. "I play a game of my own devising. For everyone else, it's like playing poker in a pitch dark room for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time."

One hundred percent agreed. Absolutely. Tennant and Sheen were beyond miraculous casting choices especially; I wouldn't be surprised if there was some intervention from the other side too. I have to say, as well, Adria Arjona was a complete left-fielder and an absolutely perfect Anathema. Truly nothing like I pictured her from the book except in every way that she *was.* That perfect mix of confidence and anxiety and weight on her shoulders as a Very Important Character contrasted with Newt's... everything that isn't that. She felt like the sort of witch that Terry would write, somewhere between Magrat and Susan with a whole bunch of her own style.

In the 80s there were a lot of great mini series that were adapted from books. I never understood why they stopped making them. Instead of a series jumping the shark when the ideas are exhausted, you can make a series that has a clear beginning, middle and end.

  • @susangamble6038

I remember at conventions in the 80s wherever had Terry (or Neil) as a guest, talk was always of dramatisation of GO. And there was always that question of 'how?' And 'how much would be cut out?' Etc. 'What would be sacrificed?' 'Would it be too Americanised?' It's fundamentally English. And we fans of Terry, Neil and GO were very protective of it. When i first heard who had been cast as Aziraphale and Crowley, I heaved a huge sigh of relief. All of us long-time fans /readers of the book had very definite images in our minds of what the two characters should look like and behave - mostly, I admit, based on the back cover of the book on which was a photo of the two authors - who sort of looked like Aziraphale and Crowley. And David and Michael were so inutterably PERFECT for thise roles (to be fair, the announcement I saw didn't specify which one had been cast as which character but I automatically had David as Crowley and Michael as Aziraphale). And Neil would be taking charge - yes! The book and the dramatisation was safe. He would be true to his part-creation and to Terry. I missed the Bikers. I missed 'the others'. I was a little confused about Anathema being American ... but it had the Hound from Hell becoming cute (much to the HfH's dismay!). It had Crowley threatening his plants ('say goodbye to your little friend'). It had most of the elements that made GO so utterly brilliant. And it was. And I loved it. We - who had been fans since its first edition; who had followed 30 years of twists, turns, waiting with bated breath - loved it. It was, in the end, Good Omens the way we had always wanted it. The way Terry wanted it. Thank you, Neil. Thank you to the cast and crew. For bringing to life something incredibly special and precious, and making it the Good Omens we all wanted to see.

I found it really interesting when they were talking about long form story telling versus something like a movie. I'm about to go into college and really was interested in film production because I've always seen movies as a sort of higher form of visual storytelling, but I'm growing more and more attached to the idea of series. For me the most important thing in a story are the characters (personal preference, I know plot is like super important but I could read a novel about walking across a field of grass if I was charmed by the characters) and you really get to form a connection to characters in long form storytelling. A movie works very well for something like action or horror, but for stuff like fantasy it's incredibly difficult to just make one movie and still be able to properly explore your world and your various characters. I love the fact that I'm growing up in a time where I have stuff like netflix and amazon and etc and I can ravenously consume so many different stories and see so many different worlds, it's truly amazing.

  • @waltermarx9922

I live the format too. It allows for character development of an ensemble cast where a single 2 hour movie has to take shortcuts as they said. Especially for a story like this that relies on nuance to tell a story that you would completely lose in a shorter format. You get to see a collection of stories knit together into a greater story, and see it all from different angles. I loved it. I wish there were more material like this. I also like the reality of it where no one knows if they are making the right or wrong decision at each point, as we all do in real life. So often the correct, or most correct, decision or action is not evident until it is far too late to do anything about it.

The voice of God was amazing, great subversion of expectation making the Almighty a woman, and especially the way she read the opening was great. I love that type of surrealist humour. "An older philosopher said the Earth was created in 4004 B.C, at precisely 9 am, on the 10th of October. He was also wrong, by almost a quarter of an hour. The Earth was created in 4004 B.C, on the 10th of October, at 9.14 am."

Same. Neverwhere was never given justice with old series, tough for the budget and time it was made, they did decently (and Marquis was amazing ;)). But Neverwhere now could be done so much better and wider and greater...so let's hope this success with Good Omens will point both Neil and any possible investor in the right direction ;)

So would I but maybe they should look at doing Strata next before trying Discworld because they've hardly set the world alight so far with Hogfather, Soul Music, Wyrd Sisters, Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic OR Going Postal - Hogfather's probably the best adaptation of a Discworld novel so far and that was only so/so. Colour of Magic was an ATROCITY!

  • @GUV85

BBC America has greenlit The Watch (a police procedural based on the City Watch novels). While I'd like to see a sprawling intertwining adaptation with the Watch, Wizards, Death and Susan, Witches of Lancre, Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, Moist von Lipwig etc all involved I'll take a Vimes based show. The adaptations that Sky did weren't great (Hogfather had its moments, Going Postal was decent, Colour of Magic was dreadful) but I think they struggled adapting the plot mostly. Discworld needs a TV show where the characters are allowed to breathe organically...the plots were always secondary.

I've never before liked an adaptation as much as the original book. In fact, many adaptations are cringeworthy. In most adaptations they make changes that compromise the message of the book. Here I love the book and the series equally and enjoyed the fact that whatever changes were made they developed and furthered the messages of the book.

Loved this version. Did not think it was a let-down at all... which is saying something, as I adore Terry Pratchett's work. They did leave out my favourite joke in the whole book, something to the effect (without actually finding my copy and looking it up): "Mr. Young was all in favour of the royal family, though not the ones that threw up on the paparazzi. But then it must be added that Mr. Young thought that paparazzi was a kind of Italian linoleum."
