Good neighbors

Steve Hartman tells us about an unusual ritual in one Utah community that has bound residents together, to come to the aid every evening of a neighbor with multiple sclerosis.

Claudette Perry Recently, after suffering severe injuries in a car accident, I was called a burden by two prominent members (one being a pastor) of my church. This was after reaching out to my church family for help. Not for money, but time to help with general cleaning because I could not perform it and just simply someone to talk to since the accident terrified me. I cannot tell you how absolutely low and unimportant being called a burden made me feel. To see these gentleman help without complaining and to see your prayer, gives me hope.

We ARE like that! I live in another country at present, and we have no idea how lucky we are in the States. I can't imagine anything like this happening here for even a few days, much less years. In the U.S. these days it's just that a few media hogs who spew and promote negativity get most of the media attention. When Steve Hartman says that he wanted to be the journalist who did the stories that came at the end of the news broadcast that would leave people feeling something--usually something positive--he knew exactly what he was doing. Keep up the great work, Steve! We need you to help remind us of who we really and truly are in the U.S.

The guys who helped that lady are a great blessing, and are like God's angels. I can only imagine how that lady suffers each day. I am chronically ill, and in constant pain from osteoarthritis, and have other health problems. I suffer day and night. May God richly bless the people who help her. She probably feels loved and cared for by her sons and the people in the neighborhood. We should all love, help, and care for each other. 0:o)

I am hesitant to say this but I think this story only seems unusual if you grew up in a city or on the coast. I have lived in the Midwest in rural Iowa pretty much my whole life and this doesn't seem one bit odd to me. I see it first hand day after day. If a farmer gets real sick during harvest it isn't anything for there to be a dozen families driving their combines, tractors, and semi trucks to help with the harvest and spending several thousands of dollars on fuel and time with no thought of the expense. Only with thoughts of prayers for the family. If a neighbor ever calls and asks for help with ANYTHING we go and help them. It is literally like having an extended family. Neighbors hang out together, drink beer/have fun together, go fishing together, take care of each other's children, and genuinely care for one another. Even if one neighbor is the "ugly duckling" in the community (crabby and doesn't get along with others real well) he/she generally helps out when needed and will always be helped if he/she or their family ever needs it. One older lady (in her late eighties now) that taught my brother and I in Sunday school decades ago still calls and asks us to drive a tractor for over thirty minutes to her house and push snow every time their is a storm and we do this for her without pay as we are aware she does not have a lot of resources. Her husband passed away in a car accident over thirty years ago. It is all about teaching kids, AND ROLE MODELING, a sense of community, values, and how to treat others. I truly feel if every child grew up this way learning these values our country would be incredible and it has nothing to do with race or religion but is simply about teaching/role modeling good values.
