I'm so glad they found a deaf child to play Libby. Other films need to start doing this. There are way to many people cast as someone with a disability who aren't disabled when there are thousands of people like Maisie who are perfect for the job.

@@alphaess1 she’s a singer that made a really offensive movie about autism called Music. she got a neurotypical girl to play an autistic character and she didn’t do her proper research and it was just really bad in general. when people tried to educate her she got defensive and said more offensive stuff and it was just a whole mess 😬😬

when I was a kid I went on a one day trip to a school that was for such kids.. there i saw many dead kids, and some were unable to walk, while some were mentally weak, or unstable.. and they were all communicating with sign language and i couldn't understand them.. i got inspired from them to learn sign language.. feels pretty cool if you know a language that many others don't know.. and you can communicate silently.. it's so much fun.! deaf people also become happy when someone finally understands what they want to communicate.. because most of ppl around them are usually unable to communicate with them.! 😷

I saw this short film recently and it was fantastic. The actors were amazing and superbly written

in Scotland they don't teach sign language as a rule, but signalong is being taught in so many schools across the country. And it's such a help......even teaching the BSL alphabet helps so much (speaking as a worker in an adult day services).....it helps all communication. Not only with deaf people. People with learning difficulties, certain levels of autism and lots other developmental and genetic disorders...having the BSL alphabet, or basic signalong, makes communication so much better. And meaningful.

Here in Australia there are a ton of courses to study sign language

“We have quite low expectations” such a well written screenplay. It says things through the characters that show the depth of the issues in a very believable way without “villain-ising” the characters, but showing the depth of pain, struggle, and ignorance. Very similar to special education history when all the experts told loving parents that the best thing to do was to sterilize and institute mentally challenged children. Now all the red flags go up and we challenge that logic when investigating reporters exposed the pregnancy in the Chicago area of a young woman unable to move and communicate. Not only am I glad this was written I’m super glad it’s gained so much recognition. My daughter was non-verbal “tantrum”Ing through preschool.. I had my master’s degree in Special Education, her strengths and weaknesses didn’t add up and fit in any of the diagnosis categories. It was in a special education preschool that an aide signed everything in class and opened up language to her. It wasn’t a part of the program just a skill that aide had. I had a brain stem hearing test done because I could clap loudly behind her and she wouldn’t move or flinch. Long story short her chronic ear infections hindered her speech and auditory processing. I partnered with a Montessori school and provided whatever she didn’t get there. She graduated from high school a semester early. Went straight to college mid year. Worked her way through her associates degree telemarketing and a the guidance counselor receptionist. Her first ‘real’ job receptionist credentialing pharmacist and pharmacies. Now with 2 children and telephone insurance sales was able to save money during COVID to move across the country and buy a house. You don’t know a child’s potential until you customize their curriculum to how they learn. NOT put them into a traditional classroom box and hope they survive. I started my own learning center 1996 to afford everything she needed which I learned, bought, hired, went to experts and then used to help other children. With COVID I’ve started to upload everything that works to be accessible online and am launching online educational coaching. Which gives you know the heart behind my business name...... All Things Are Possible Education - Finding the Genius in your Child!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story -- and that is fabulous you have moved your teaching online so you can reach more people! I'm touched by your story, and one line in particular stands out -- you said "You don’t know a child’s potential until you customize their curriculum to how they learn." -- and this applies to SO many different children -- those with learning disabilities, ADHD, sight impairments, those with deep skills in one area (music, science, maths, drawing, theatre, whatever it is) ... and more. We as humans are not made from cookie cutters -- and the often one-size-fits-all educational system makes many children feel "not ok" or "broken" -- when in reality there are just many different ways to be human, and to learn, in this world! (That's my take on it all, anyway:) ). Thank you again for sharing all you did!

Libby's eyes are full of emotions which touches the 💓 The silent child is a beautiful movie which kept me thinking about how important sign language is for everyone actually and not only for the deaf.

Aaaaaaw...I love this...so touching...I love my deaf beautiful daughter.

After the first ten minutes, I got my eyes filled with tears. Rest of the film, I saw through tears. So creative, and so touching. Rachel you talked to millions of sensitive hearts on a very sensitive matter.

Maisie is just adorable, she did an incredible job in the film.

Well done Rachel and Maisie, I love how Rachel is so involved in the deaf community, I am currently watching S5 of Switched at Birth, Rachel plays Lilly Summers/Lilly Kennish and she just portrays her so well, during the streaming of Switched At Birth or SaB I have picked up ASL and now am fluent in ASL which I have always wanted to do but just didn't know how or where to start, so thank you and congratulions on The nomination

Such a wonderful film and all of the actors, but especially Maisie, were excellent in it. I adore Rachel and her writing skills are spot on with this film. I hope she does more because she is a treasure. Watching this years later and so happy to know that the film did indeed win an Oscar!!! Yah!

I thoroughly loved watching it but it broke my heart as well. To see how quickly she connects and can express herself when given the tools is so true. My son was very speech delayed. We tried for so long but he refused to sign with us. He could hear us but couldn’t talk to us. As soon as he made that connection that he could talk with his hands he was learning signs so quick and using them so fast. It was huge while he learned to talk.

Excellent short film that brings a side of this universal issue. Sign language should be available 24/7 in all media everywhere and part of the curriculum in all schools.

Amazing how Maisie continually looks at the signer its so important, her line of communication, im partially deaf and looking at the person really helps, i cannot sign though and wish i could. Boy and bless you young girl, your shy, adventourous, and i wish through your adventourous spirit you will help other boys and girls your age understand and more importantantly some of the parents who have some stupid and arcaic ideas about us being deaf, i get mocked for being deaf. Stray strong young lady.

I watched silent child yesterday and I loved I was so sad because it was so short (it’s a short film so yeah) I wanted it to be a movie Maisie (I think is her name) and Rachel and all of the cast were amazing

The writer is gorgeous and she has a noble attitude toward Maisie. She genuinely cares about her and the cause. Her face is luminous. Loved the movie. ❤️

I once had a temporary assignment here at university of California’s Counseling for the deaf program, 30 years ago now, for two weeks. I was the only hearing and nonsigning person there. (My job was to answer phones and deal with hearing visitors and deliveries). The place was silent all day long except for occasional bursts of laughter. I never knew what the joke was! It was a good lesson to understand how a dead person feels cut out from society. Helen Keller said it was much worse than being blind; no easy contact and communications with others, lonely.

So they actually gave the role to an actual deaf girl with tremendous acting talent. Now show this to Sia, please.

I loved her since Switched at Birth. I miss it so much I'm incredibly proud of Rachel and how she's advocating for us. I'm Hard of Hearing and I'm so proud more people are advocating for how hard it is for kids like us. I grew up with no support with my hearing and I'm just in love with sign language and this film.

My cousin learned sign language before having children, as she heard information about how good this is to communicate with your baby. I would love to see sign language taught in every primary and secondary school. Such a skill, and so important. Great job Maisy, so brave, well done. I did not know that Maci is deaf in real life as well. So now I am so SO SOOO INCREDIBLY IMPRESSED and amazed by this cute little sweetheart. She is so cute it is unbelievable and I just love love love her. Maci is totally going places in life. And I am also certain that she can be anything her heart desires. And I am definately a huge fan of both her and the sweet young woman who wrote/(ditected?) the film. I am completely in love with this film and I pray so hard that they win. But like that man said: they’ve already won just by being nominated, and I totally agree. No matter if they win or not, Maci is still number ONE for me!! I am partially deaf and struggle in mainstream schools. Since I went to the deaf school life was a lot better in terms of education and making friends. But boarding school had lasting impact on realising how much I missed out on events that happened at home while I was at the school. But I have an unique group of friends who are so good and the best from my school days. Now after so many year battling with our government here in Ireland 🇮🇪 we now have Irish sign language recognize here.. ISL was not allowed while I was at the deaf school. And that was in the 80s. So thankfully we have this movie to explain the importance of sign language. Bravo to maisie and the movie makers and to the lady who wrote the story. Well done.

Mom taught ASL in the LA school district all her working career, I know she said deaf people cant read lips because they never heard the SOUNDS that come from lip movement, it's different if you become deaf later. She related how back in the 70s when she started the program in the school, she'd run into roadblocks with employers not wanting to hire deaf people. One student was extremely good at upholstery, she sent him to a factory that uses that skill and they wouldn't hire him, even after she took samples of his work over to them, they objected to his maybe being injured by not hearing, and she said she would accompany him on the job at NO cost for a time to get him settled in and trained, they finally relented and the student was their best worker. But that's what it took in the 70s to even GET a job for a deaf student.

This child was awesome in the film and an awesome young lady. Best wishes for a wonderfully full life and much success to you all. Thank you for letting us be a short part of your journey. God Bless.

Yes because I'm deaf and we have many of the same struggles so we must be together for our rights but I think the three generations of her family are deaf. 💕❤️🌹

I just watched this short film Silent Child, 3days ago it was amazing and Libby the little girl is so good that it made this film so real. Idk at first that she's actually deaf until now after watching this, and I recommend you should watch this short film if you have time it's very amazing. And omg Maisie is so cute and adorable, i wish i see her more on films, she's very talented.

I watched the movie yesterday and was amazed by it! It delivers a very powerful message about understanding the difficulties the hearing impaired face in everyday life!

I love the movie. It transform my point of view and now I realized how hard is the struggle for deaf children. I’m learning sign language. I want to be part of the solution. This kid is so beautiful. I'm trying to learn it myself. Not because of this movie but because I saw a mom signing to her young son in the airport one day and I instantly realized how few people that boy will ever get to communicate with. I'm a pilot by trade and a Captain I flew with shared a story he witnessed. A professional baseball player was walking through the airport when he saw a little boy, all giddy, run up to get his autograph but when the boy reached the ball player he started signaling to him that he couldn't hear. Immediately the ball player started signing to the child and the Captain said the boy just lit up. Here his hero could speak to him. It was a touching story. I'm no hero to anyone but I'm hoping I can brighten somebody's day by giving them a chance to talk with a stranger in a random place and make an unexpected friend.

I have had hearing lose these last few years.i am in my 30,s.Sign language should be compulsory in schools.so many people do not understand hearing loss or people being deaf.a lot of us hear noise.i just can’t understand some words because I don’t hear some sounds Properly.looking back at my childhood I probably had hearing Difficult back then.a friend asked why I always watched tv with my head sideways.it Totally makes sense now, that was my good ear and I had it pointed at the tv .many people think people hard of hearing or deaf need to be yelled at..no..don’t do that.face the person you are speaking too.don’t cover your mouth.speak Clearly and have Patience as you might have to repeat yourself a few times.i wish I had learnt Sign language as a child.you never know when you could lose your hearing or if someone needs help and can’t hear.so many children are left Undiagnosed with some hearing loss and it effects school life Dramatically.this little girl is so cute.the part in the film when she is at the table and she sees talking,but there is only Silence is very real.hearing Impairments vary and some may hear nothing,others hear Static, ringing in the ears or every noice at once,but what is said.background noise is a great problem for us.like at the shopping centres.it sounds like a loud bee hive and high pitched ringing comes in the ears.voices are Muffled.some deaf people can still hear noise.it may just be Ringing in the ears or static.you don’t realise how much you Rely on facial expressions until you lose your hearing.so many hearing aids are becoming small and hard to notice.people need to learn how to even Approach someone with hearing difficulties.people coming from behind us or even talking behind us does not work.we don’t hear what you are saying and often we get the crap scared out of us.we don’t hear you Approaching from behind.even if someone is staying at my side I might not hear them even with hearing aids.hearing loss can cause hearing Fatigue as it takes alot to try to Communicate with someone and to listen.great to see a film that Educates people and helps others in life.

I'm little by little coming to terms with the fact that, in the next month or so, I'm going to be facing a similar situation to Joanna's. I finished watching the film in the last hour or so, and I've been... processing... some emotions. ...But seeing interviews, and Maisy doing well in real life, and being engaged with directly by interpreters and interviewers and included... It's eased up that gut punch (God, though. That lying-awake-at-night scene and the I-love-you scene. Still processing that as I type this.) (I've been actively avoiding thinking too hard about what that week will be like.)

The film won the Oscar for Live Action Short Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

I know ASL as a 7th language because a lot of my friends being in the deaf community (started to learn at 8yrs) I am glad I am a horary member of the deaf community, even though I am not deaf, I don’t hear some sounds that normal people hear as I am losing my hearing (genetic hearing loss issue)

Any one else looking at the news captions on the bottom of the screen too? Also That really was a great film. It sort of reminds me of What Masie Knew. A film you can see here on KZread. Its the names that reminded me and how both the protagonists are little girls. Both are deeply moving pieces.

If sign language was not tied to each single spoken language, it would be one of the most common languages in the world. It would be a really special way to unite the planet. Gestuno is the official international sign language and it would be great if people was taught it

Each country has its own sign language, and each of these sign languages is unrelated to that country's spoken language. However, some people know more than one sign language, just as some people are multilingual in spoken languages. World-wide, American Sign Language (ASL) is the most commonly known "second" sign language just as English is the most broadly used spoken language among multilingual people.

There's Children Of A Lesser God written by Mark Medoff in 1979. In 1981 it premiered in London starring Trever Eve, he had to learn American Sign Language. I've previously mentioned how much I enjoyed watching Silent Child, in particular character "Libby's" dismissive response, when her on screen mother tried to kiss "Libby" goodbye, this spoke volumes to the audience.

I LOVED this short. So sad to see her struggles and the lack of understanding from her mom and society! They should teach sign language from the first of school along side with the alphabet and spelling to all children!!!!!!

Used to go to my primary school, when she left everybody was so upset as she was so nice!
