James Bond 007 was one of those games I really enjoyed. There's an alternate ending if you find a hidden item in Q's lab. The one thing I could never figure out though... a glass-covered door in a cave that I couldn't seem to open.

The Star Wars game also has a version on the ds if anyone is interested

@@KylerTheodori Long story short, you're right, and I hear the starfighter levels are pretty fun. But on the other hand, if you and a buddy both have a GBA and a Star Wars cart, you can play a Clone Wars co-op campaign, and beat-em-ups are always better with a friend.

I noticed many Game Gear/Master System games did a pretty good job looking almost like 16 bit compared to Game Boy/Nes games back then.
As someone from the UK I would never expect good games on the Master System to be considered unexpected but then it was still supported well into the mid 90s here getting many ports of 16-bit games that were only released here as well as plenty of games that were only released on the Game Gear in the rest of the world.
I remember playing and finishing the GBA Star Wars Episode III game 10 years ago, because a friend of mine had this game. As for Spellcaster, this is one of the games set in the universe of the Kujaku Ou manga/anime by Makoto Ogino, and this game got a sequel on the MD/Genesis called Mystic Defender (which then became the basis for another Genesis game, called Jewel Master)
Mai Shiranui advertising!
If you liked Revenge of the Sith on the GBA, try TMNT based on the 2007 animated movie. It shares most if not all of the development team and is very similar. P.S. Episode III also came out on the DS with additional 3D starfighter levels.
@Smilley85

There was also a TMNT game or two on GBA based on the cartoon reboot that came out at the time. Every turtle had a unique feature - Raphael could climb walls, Michelangelo could hover by spinning his nunchucks - and you could freely switch between them.
Oh, I played that Star Wars game on the DS! So weird seeing a game I haven't even thought about since being a kid! That version had a SUPER GOOD multiplayer dog fight mode too, was a favourite at my school.

@@spideysting1 it’s worth it. Not sure why Drunk said it’s an RPG. There are no stats or levels. It’s “action adventure” with puzzles. My advice is to have level maps handy for 2nd level and the nuclear waste depot. It’s not that those areas are bad, but they on first play through they just feel slow and confusing due to being big. There is no minimap in the game, just a “radar” that shows your X/Y position and it’s not useful in my experience.

SPELLCASTER. So, I had a rich uncle when I was young, and he always got the awesome new toys and consoles for his kids. That included a genesis, but he also got the 'power base converter' adapter on top to play those 8-bit games stored on cards. Anyway, I played a lot of games that I later tried to find again desperately, as my memories of them came in bits and pieces. Ys III was one of them (which was remade as Ys: The Oath in Felghana), as was a cute, but stressful sort of 'arena platformer' called Teddy Boy. SpellCaster was the one game I couldn't wrap my little 7-year-old head around. The action scenes at the beginning, sure. Exhaust all the talk options, go to the new area that shows in the list... all right. But then you have to experiment with using different spells, and while the manual has their descriptions, it wasn't always intuitive. Example: there's a point where you have to save a girl from a whirlpool. My child brain thought that I should fly out using a flying spell to pick her up, but no, you have to use a tornado spell to lift her into the air first. Why? I dunno. Maybe it would make more sense if I had seen the movie of the same name. Anyway, I recommend it to anyone who wants to try a very old game that had neat ideas and wasn't afraid to be what it wanted to be.
@armorvil
3 жыл бұрын
Ha yes, the "Makiri" spell. My guess is that touching water would cancel the spell, since touching anything cancels Makiri in the action scenes. I even remember a few spell names : Fudo (the fireball, and you can nuke the first boss with only one) and Kannon (the spell that recalls dead spirits to the heavens, and you had to use it on a lute-playing ghost underwater to get the 7 Branches-Sword or something, and hundreds of enemies would come at you on rafts after that)... I still have nightmares about the pyramid labyrinth by the way, haha.
Oh my God!!! You actually found a lost precious memory from my childhood with the first game: "Fire Fox". I remember fondly going to my friend's pizza party at a Showbiz Pizza (currently Chuck E Cheese's) in Kalamazoo, MI, for the first time in my life. "Fire Fox" was a hidden little gem in the corner that no other kid noticed, let alone played. That game chewed up a boatload of my tokens that night. It was like "Afterburner" on steroids!!! Thought I would never see this game ever again, let alone find it's name some 30-odd years later!!! Thanks you, my fellow Gamer Bro!!!!
If you like fighting games, try the NeoGeo Pocket in general. Obviously a SNK console is going to have fighting games. But they are really well made. SNK vs Capcom is fantastic on the NGP.

watching firefox (arcade) in the firefox browser...and the Neo Geo Pocket (color) had one of the best handheld fighters w/ SNK v Capcom. I played the hell out of that..had great mini games too.
I loved seeing SpellCaster and 007 on this list. There are some excellent choices here. Thanks for another informative video.
There was a Firefox arcade cabinet in the mall down the hill from my childhood home. Ahh, the memories of freaking out over it and other laserdisc games back in the 80's!
I had Fatal Fury Special back in the early 90's. I was completely blown away with how well it played! It was definitely the best fighting game on a handheld system until perhaps Street Fighter Alpha on GBC.
SNES Drunk is the best retro game KZreadr.
Now that I see footage of that Star Wars GBA game, I remember my friend owned it and showed it off to me a few times. What a strange repressed memory to just have randomly pop up, but I find random recollections like this fascinating.

Sonic games for Master System/Game Gear were even more ruthless to the player, as when you took damage you would lose all of your rings with no chance of recovering them. Still, Sonic 1/2/Chaos were a blast and sometimes with better design choices than the Mega Drive ones (like finding the emeralds on the stages themselves instead of using bonus stages, which I always thought dull). I like the way they converted the Star Wars music for this one on GBA. And even though I had a Game Gear and I love fighting games, never heard of that version of FFS before. Looks pretty decent! They even kept Ryo (which was a secret character) instead of many absent characters like Kim Kaphwan or Wolfgang Krauser

I picked up James Bond about 2 years ago on a whim and had a ton of fun playing it.
I've always liked your channel, but this "unexpected" series is a real treat. I collect what I can afford for some of these obscure systems and you have pointed out some games that I wasn't aware of. I hope you can continue/ revisit the format in the future. Awesome!
OH MAN I recorded a playthough of James Bond 007 on Game Boy a while back, and maaaaan that game rules! I had a ton of fun with it.
A fun tidbit about the GBA Revenge of the Sith game is that a lot of the incidental music was adapted not from the films, but from the Clone Wars cartoon series. Like General Grievous' leitmotif and the level music for the Jedi Temple stages.
That Fatal Fury looks neat, you wouldnt see a fighting game with those graphics on a handheld until the GBA.
Glad someone finally talks about the 007 rpg on gameboy, whenever I mention it everyone thinks i'm lying
5:24 That 'someone' is Ed Fries, who was critical to the success of the original Xbox and was the VP of all software publishing for the console, including Halo. He made Halo 2600 not only as a tribute to Bungie, but also as a challenge to see what he could do with the extremely limited Atari 2600 and just 4K of storage. The titlescreen is crazy impresive given that the 2600 wasn't really intended to even be able to do music.
Great video full of some surprises. I’ve watched a good amount of obscure/hidden gem videos and only heard of spellcaster.
As a kid I pumped a few quarters into Firefox. The effect was pretty good, but there were a number of Laserdisc with Sprite overlay games back then including MACH 3 that was similar. The nice thing about Firefox is that it used the Star Wars arcade controller, which was and still is one of the best feeling game controller of all time.
James Bond 007 is amazing. I loved that game as a kid. Huge sleeper for sure!
That GBA's Star Wars game?! I remember that one, one of the finest titles for the handheld really. Produced by Ubisoft of all people! My teens were the 80s, and Firefox absolutely blew me away. I had seen the movie when I was maybe 12, and when I first saw the cabinet from the side, I was excited thinking it was a Defender-like game. When I saw the attract screen, though, hoo boy. I spent literal hours (over the course of a year or two) watching the attracts, because it was a 50c game and I was broke as a joke. I always thought the overlaid graphics were a bit jarring, but the live-action backdrops kept me coming back...not the least reason of which was because they played my favorite parts from the movie (ie. all the bits with the actual plane).
Nice to see 007 on GB talked about. Nobody ever mentions that game and it always seemed like i was the only kid who had it growing up. Great list overall. Looking forward to trying the others.

Power Rangers on Game Gear is amazing too. All specials are done with down forward motions which cuts the learning curve a lot, and they took the time to make sure Megazord's legs don't swap colors when it faces opposite directions, that's always a nice touch! Also it's the only super melee style tourney fighting game I've seen that works well, and by that I mean you only got one person at a time but the stages will have multiple fighters to beat up. It's the same approach Star Control used for its ship fights and nobody does this anymore!
