My understanding is that the Sony/Nintendo deal wasn't just tanked due to greed or hubris on Nintendo's part. The deal Sony was pushing for specified *zero* royalties for Nintendo on the sale of Playstation CDs due to the use of Sony's proprietary "super CD" standard- in fact, Sony would have kept all royalties and retained publishing rights for the software produced on CD. If Nintendo had gone along with the deal, it probably would have put them out of business.

That is how I always understood it too. Someone goofed up and the way the deal was written Sony basically controlled the whole CD business of the add-on. Of course Nintendo isn't going to go along with that, not because they're greedy but because they're not morons. What would be the point of releasing a CD add-on if you're not going to see the profits from the software side of the equation? Unfortunately that doesn't fit into the gaming media and internet morons narrative that Nintendo is pure evil. I ask the haters, if Sony had made the same deal with Sega, would they have gone along with it or would they had said, "Hell no!" as well.

I heard that Nintendo had to give Chris Houlihan a monetary prize because - despite the fact the room exists in a Link to the Past - they couldn’t provide a consistent means of accessing it so it didn’t satisfy the conditions of their own contest.

  • @Jigglysaint

Two consistent strats I know of is to go to the secret grave spot in the Graveyard, remove the stones and push the grave to reveal the hole, then bomb yourself into the hole. The other is on the next screen. You enter the fairy hole exit cave, exit and go south to the ladder that leads into the water. You need to not have the flippers, and if you jump down from the spot just left of the ladder about 4 or 5 times, you can then enter the hole to find the secret room. This secret is very useful in ALTTP randomizer where you need Zora money. Especially in multiworld because there's no guarantee any of the other players can give you enough money before you need to check Zora.

Houlihan is not triggered by a "debug mode". That room is the default destination for holes, but properly functioning holes override the default. You get to the room by causing a misalignment between Link's onscreen position and the screen scrolling position, making it possible for the scrolling position to be misaligned with the hole and therefore missing the destination override when Link falls in. The LttP code is seriously jank. It's actually pretty funny finding some of the bizarre shit they did in there.

People were convinced you could open a chamber under spore spawn's room if you did 100 wall jumps off of the defeated boss, knocking him off his stem. Inside you'd find the Spike Suit that unlocked new charge and melee attacks. There was that weird jiggle when you wall jumped off spore spawn so it seemed plausible. Mechanically it should work, because the options to recruit each special character aren't tied to any specific choices beyond some flags in stages (visiting towns in the proper order, for example). Almost all of them just check the main character's ALI/CHA and the reputation meter, iirc. That reminds me, though... if I knew how to do any programming I'd want to make a rom hack for this game to add an option to pay at churches to alter a character's ALI/CHA stats, since managing them can be annoying when you want to make a balanced army.

I think to say Nintendo was "butt hurt" is a bit misleading. The deal DID heavily favor Sony as the PlayStation would essentially be anything and everything they wanted it to be, and also a Super Nintendo. Sony would have practically full control over the hardware and software, and would also be making the greater profit. Sega would later shoot down a deal for that very reason as well. Sony had their name on the product and therefore wanted control just as Nintendo and Sega did. In my opinion it was inevitable that Sony would create their own console.

  • @immortallegacy100

    @immortallegacy100

@Big White Duck I think Sony probably had a case of cold feet, but if either Nintendo or Sega would've gone ahead with their deals then there really wouldn't have been any need to go out on their own, at least not first. Sony would've been able to ride their coattails to making a profit and also get their name out on the market as both a publisher and developer, and they would've had their name right beside either Nintendo or Sega's on EVERY console and game sold.

Always enjoy these videos. In the interest of myth busting, WARMECH is not the rarest encounter or enemy in FF1. It actually has an encounter rate of about 12/256, but it can only be encountered in one room, the final room of the penultimate dungeon. There are other rarer encounters at only 4/256, but they contain enemies that are more common in other encounters or appear in other areas. That would make the “rarest encounter” of WARMECH arguable, except the encounter with IRONGOL also only occurs in one room: the final room with encounters in the final dungeon at the 4/256 encounter, making it the rarest encounter although perhaps not “by far.” All that being said, WARMECH is probably the most difficult encounter, or the final boss, CHAOS.

When I first saw it, I never knew it was supposed to be Ness in the Final Starman's reflection. Truth be told, I legitimately thought it was either Giygas, Pokey, or some purple alien henchman controlling it and viewing you from inside the visor. I only knew about the final boss of Earthbound and Ness/Pokey from Smash Bros Brawl, so needless to say, my knowledge was limited at this time. From afar, Ness's eyes always looked like googly eyes pointing in opposite directions, and his mouth looked like a cartoonish tongue being stuck out. Anyways, enough of my anecdotal rambling lol.

As a LttP Randomizer runner, allow me to share some insight on the "Houlihan Room": There are actually a lot of ways to reach the Houlihan room! It's not a "debug" mode exactly... more like a failsafe against bugs. Basically what it IS is the place the game takes you when you do a transition and the game doesn't know where to transition you TO. For example, when you fall down a hole, the game determines what map to send you to based on your Y coordinate in whatever map you're on at the time you enter the transition state (so for example the game knows if you transition at (whatever)x, 25y of "Hyrule Field A" to send you to map "Cave B" or whatever. I made those up but you get the idea.) If you enter the transition state at a Y coordinate the game doesn't have a known destination for it would probably just get confused and lock up. To prevent this, the devs put in a "default" room to send you to any time the game otherwise doesn't know where you're supposed to go. That's the Houlihan Room. The easiest way to get there is to offset Link's sprite from his tracked Y coordinate and fall down a hole. Dashing south on the same pixel as a screen transition accomplishes this for some reason (and the easiest way to get onto that pixel is by knocking yourself back with a bomb). There's also a weird method that involves jumping into the water a bunch with no flippers. But the EASIEST way is to simply open the left side grave (the one that drops you into the sewer escape near the treasure room) and use a bomb to knock yourself into the hole. This doesn't work with most holes because you won't actually fall in, but the graveyard one is special. There are a bunch of other neat bugs you can do by putting yourself into weird states like this, but most of them were patched out of the 1.1 version of the game (which all western versions are) so you have to play a Japanese version to make use of them (which is what the randomizer runs on, though it's been so thoroughly manipulated by the Randomizer devs over the years there isn't actually any JP text left when we play lol). My favourite is the Fake Flipper glitch which lets you swim without flippers!

Every time I see light plastic that has turned yellow, which is still a common sight to see, I think of the Super Nintendo. I don't know if they changed the plastic as you suggest in your case, but my Super Nintendo is also its original color. It also hasn't seen a lot of direct sunlight, though it sounds like they can yellow anyway. My unit was from 1994, so it's from the mid-to-late period of the system's life. Also cool to learn about the secret room in Zelda. My favorite part of that is learning about the war mech in Final Fantasy and how rare that is. I may have known about that, but had forgotten about that if I ever knew in the first place.

I remember the Warmech contest back in the day. It was advertised in Nintendo Power's article on Final Fantasy. I remember talking to another kid about it and he was like, "Yeah, Warmech is supposed to be the rarest enemy in the game, but my cousin was playing it, and on his first playthrough he met Warmech. Many, many years later when I picked up a copy of FF1 from the local game store, and played it through for the first time (I never got around to it when it was in stores. Yeah, I know that's weird.) I got to the bridge where you encounter Warmech and ... yep, ran into him.

I actually didn't know that people thought cigarettes caused the SNES to turn yellow over time. I definitely was aware of a lot of SNES consoles turning yellow overtime. The one I had for more than 20 years was mostly gray but it still had some yellow in some parts. It never turned completely yellow like some examples on the web. I was definitely aware of Chris houlihan's room in a Link to the past. These other things you mentioned I had no idea about though and it was very interesting to watch.

The reason why the code doesn't work in the switch version is because there's a competitive scene of that game and sometimes there would be jerks who do the cheat code and there was nothing you could do about it, so instead of people having to agree to "soft-ban it" they removed the code for good

The real flub with the Earthbound cover is not whether it's his reflection or not, it's that this could never be his reflection at any time in the game. The only time you encounter the golden Final Starman is in the Cave of the Past, in which your party members consciousness are all transferred into robots, Ness is not human at this point. A more likely scenario would be Ness encountering the Silver variation, a boss called the Starman Deluxe, in Stone Henge. But I guess they decided on gold, because it's prettier?

@@randomguyontheinternet7940 If you are referring to the Starman Super, yes, they can only be found in the Stonehenge Base. The Final Starmen are found in the Cave of the Past, which makes the cover art even more perplexing since the reflection shows Ness in his regular body, when you can only be in the past as a robot. For whatever reason the one on the cover has the yellow-gold color of a Starman Super as opposed to their in-game pink-gold color or the more faded golden shade of their official clay model.

A faster setup for the houlihan room, if you don’t have flippers, go to the fairy cave east of sanctuary, walk into the cave, then jump into the water four times, and then lift the plant to go to the fairy drop down and fall in. Entering the houlihan room is basically cause by de-syncing where the game thinks link is on the screen, and where he is when he drops in a hole, they programmed that room in as a safe room basically, a place for the game to send you when it otherwise wouldn’t know where to send you. Also, frankly a cop-out of naming that for Houlihan, and not something major in a game like the contest suggested.

I sat in at a historical look at the Nintendo Sony CD console a couple years back at the Retro Game Expo, they cleared up some common misconceptions about what the thing was supposed to be, how at that moment in time the concept of a CD-ROM being used for games was an exception, and all sources pointed to the "Nintendo PlayStation" system likewise being intended for multimedia applications like visual encyclopedias and virtual tours and such. They concluded we did not in fact narrowly miss an alternate history where the PS1 as we know it would've been a Nintendo console, it would've been something very different, and Sony's ambitions to enter the games business was a mostly independent decision which would have probably came to fruition eventually anyway.
