Good Deal? For Sale, Possible Z28? 1977 Camaro Junkyard Find

The yard recently got this 2nd Gen Fbody and they are putting it up for sale. This 1977 Chevy Camaro may or may not be a Z28. Either way, it appeared to be a good project. The body is in primer and does have body filler so it may have rust and or dents. The glass and tires looked to be in good shape and there was a full set of wheels. The interior wasn't in too bad of shape either with the seats being reupholstered along with a newer carpet. The door panels were good as well. The dash panel would need to be replaced. The tilt steering column waa damaged but a new aftermarket chrome column waa included. Under the hood the Chevy small block had an Edelbrock intake and air cleaner. Probably a summit brand polished carburetor and fuel pump were installed as well. The brakes were addressed, there was a fairly new exhaust and tubular upper control arms were installed. #willitbesaved

I'm OK with the speaker upgrade as long as the package tray and other interior trim isn't ruined in the process. Things like a radio install should be able to be reversed and taken out so if you want to go back to stock you can do so.

Now that one brings back memories of high school/college in the early to mid 80s, where everyone had a (well) used 2nd gen f-body. I owned a '74 Type LT, which had that same big bumper front end style. It had a black exterior and black interior with Cragar SS wheels and everyone's favorite cheap tire, the cooper cobras. :) I had done mild work on the stock 350 block, headers, cherry bombs, all the classic go faster stuff from that era. It was fun, fast and could beat the kids with their new 3rd gens and fox bodies. Although, the Buick GNs from 86/87 would give me a good run. Fun times...Thanks for showing us that one my friend!

It looks like a good solid project! If it's really a Z28 it might be worth $3,500.00 but than you need a decent paint job and some interior parts to make as nice driver! If could get for $1,500 to $2,000 it would be a good deal! Thanks for sharing!

Whoa Nelley, F body and hopefully it will be bought by somebody. Yes, the 1977 Z-28 was a "half year" of sorts as it made a return after last being offered in the 1974 model year. Contrast that to the Trans Am and they offered it through the "lean years", so that's one reason I've always preferred the Trans Am over the Camaro. But I still do like the Camaro. There were 14,349 Z-28s made for the 1977 model year. We got the VIN, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, Q for Camaro Sport Coupe, 87 for two door coupe, L for 350 V8 with four barrel, 7 for 1977 model year, L for Van Nuys, CA assembly and the rest is the production sequence. 1977 Camaros were made at both Norwood, OH and Van Nuys, CA, but Pontiac Firebirds were only made at Norwood, OH in 1977. Van Nuys would be added in 1978 due to the high Firebird demand (partially due to the success of Smokey and the Bandit in 1977). We got the tag, we can brag: ST77 for 1977 model year, 1FQ87 for Camaro Sport Coupe, L for Van Nuys, CA assembly, 19R for Black vinyl interior trim, A51 for bucket seats, W11L and W11U for water based Antique White upper and lower exterior paint, 06C for the third week of June 1977 production, B for black secondary interior trim (steering column and instrument panel), dash (-) for no power windows, dash (-) for Sport Coupe. The Van Nuys, CA plant, part of the "Terrible Three" plants in California operated from 1947 to 1992 and there are a mix of industrial and retail/commercial businesses on the property now, including Station 81 of the Los Angeles Fire Department. After August 1987 and through the 1992 model year, all F bodies were assembled at Van Nuys. Production moved to St. Therese, Quebec Canada for the 4th generation cars from 1993 to 2002. There were 20,347 Camaros painted this color in 1977, out of 218,843 total Camaros for 1977. Over 187,000 of them were V8 equipped. You could get a 250 CID straight six with one barrel, a 305 V8 with two barrel or a 350 V8 with four barrel as your engine choices in 1977. Water based paint was used at Van Nuys due to CA air regulations at the time and it was troublesome and many cars were left with sheets of paint coming off when they were just a few years old. Some owners got them painted under warranty, but many were left holding the bag because GM blamed the paint supplier and the paint supplier blamed GM. Yes, let's see a video on the Corvair. Ralph Nader will be frowning. LOL. I do not think it's a Z28, as instead of the dash at the end of the tag where it denotes Sport Coupe, a Z-28 had an "8" there on the tag of Van Nuys built cars. The door jamb sticker showing the 15" tire size was unique to the 1977 Z-28, but the cowl tag is missing the necessary code for Z-28. Thet "8" applies to Van Nuys built cars, Norwood tags tell you more information and less in code, so on a Norwood assembled car it would say "Z28" on it. The rear end ratio was either 2.56 or 3.08 when you got a 350 and an automatic in 1977, and with the Z-28 and automatic/350 combination you got a 3.42. You could get a 3.73 with the Z28/350 combination and a four speed. However, no four wheel disc brakes on a 2nd gen Camaro, only the Pontiac F body starting in 1979. As noted, I do like the Camaro, but give me a 1977 Trans Am over this any day. The Trans Am will out handle it, eat it alive and has a lot more class to it. By 1979, there was no comparison, the Trans Am was a superior car with WS6, special editions, rear disc brakes and the like, something the Camaro did not offer. Again, I wouldn't mind a clean Camaro, but it's Poncho for the Google Man if given a choice. Whoa Nelley, F body looking a bit shoddy. Sport Coupe took someone for a loop. 1977 and not going to Heaven. 3-5-0 and doesn't have to go. Made in CA and doesn't have to go away. Needed an 8 on the tag to be a Z-28, then it might be great. If it's repainted white, it could be out of sight. Inside was black, and with all those silly mods, it ain't worth jack. $3500 bucks and without a plan to fix it, you'll be out of luck. No WS6 but doesn't have to hit the bricks. Wasn't made at Norwood, and it ain't no good. Assembled in Van Nuys, not yet time to say your goodbyes. That's not it, not time to quit. Shouldn't be flat and that will not be that. Please don't get squished because even though you can't hold a candle to a Pontiac F body of that vintage, if you become a soda can, many here along with the Google Man will be very, very, very, very pissed.

However, we had a "family car" (an '80 Bonneville Brougham coupe that was stolen in 1982) for trips and the like. The Trans Am was a 2nd car, and then by 1988, my mother never drove it again (it was originally her car, my dad bought it for their 15th wedding anniversary in 1980). I changed the oil, putting it to the proper level, changed the plug and air filter and freed the engine. It started up, burned out the excess oil and it runs like a top. The one I use at my workshop garage came from the curb in 2011 and I've done nothing but maintenance to it and it runs like a top too. I'll be using that one tomorrow night.

Chevrolet brought back the Camaro Z28 which this car a 1977 model was more show than go. The last Camaro was sold in the 1974 model year. You can go to places such as year one to get the restoration parts you need and you can google places that also do air conditioning, but you would have to retrofit it with the R134a system. That car used R12 but it is getting extremely expensive and rare nowadays.

I don't see why people are so concerned about a '77 being a Z28 or not, by that time the Z28 was nothing but a graphics package. As with any '70s or earlier car, you can now put whatever you want under the hood. You can have as much power as you can afford. Late second generation Z28s were ridiculously underpowered.

It’s a 1977 Z28. At 2:34 it shows the Tire Pressure tag when he opens the drivers door. Only the Z28 had GR70/15 tires on 15x7” wheels, all other Camaro’s had 14” tires/wheels. The trim tag on the firewall will list ‘Z28’ if it’s a Norwood built Camaro, the trim tags on Van Nuys CA cars did not. This car has the standard Sport Coupe interior. The Custom interior (Type LT) was an option. I factory ordered a white Z28 in ‘77, and good friend ordered a black one, both were 4 speed cars, 3:73 posi.. Great cars. There were no Z28’s for 1975 and 1976. 1970 to 1974 Camaro’s had the small rear window, 1975 to 1981 had the larger rear window.

True on the tires, but on the cowl tag, that's not entirely correct. Van Nuys cars had an "8" on the trim tag to denote Z28 in 1977, and Norwood cars had "Z28" on them. This car has a dash where the "8" should be. A dash there denotes Sport Coupe, not Z28 in 1977 on a Van Nuys, CA assembled car.

Okay, the first time our friends in the neighborhood met Gary, he was about 12 -13 years old, years Pryor to me selling him the Z28, he was just a kid that wanted to go swimming at SPEC POND, Massachusetts... Gary was a good kid, never in trouble so we took him swimming with parental consent... We built a 80ft TARZAN SWING that would launch ANYONE 70 FT. in the air... Truthfully, the swing was kind of dangerous to go on, I wont lie... You had to climb up roots and rocks on a 45 degree angle with the rope held in your mouth because you need both hands and both feet to climb way up there... IF YOU DONT HOLD ON TIGHT AND IF YOU CANT HOLD YOUR WEIGHT UPON THE G-FORCE THIS TARZAN IS WHIPPING YOU OUT THERE HIGHER AND FASTER THAN YOU ARE USE TO... "Listen, just hold onto this knot and put your foot on the bottom knot of the rope.." " Simple." " Make sure you let go of the rope over the water, not over the roots and granite rocks." Gary swears, in front of all the cute girls there that he will be fine, dont worry, walking towards the swing like a tough-guy... this is not going to end well... he shouldn't do it, said to self, him...

Give you the final, if care to know... ONE THING about the Tarzan swing... You have to hold on to the top knot on the rope... The bottom knot comes 10 inches to the ground, granite rocks, roots from the Pine trees holding up the swing... MAKE SURE you hold on to that TOP KNOT, GARY... GUESS WHICH KNOT HE RUFUSED TO HOLD ON TO...??? So, Gary decides to hold onto the lower knot... " Dont do that...!" HONESTLY , ONLY I, and 3 other people tried to stop Gary from swinging from the bottom knot, Gary slamming into most of the ground, holding tightly, he did, rolling into the beginning of the shoreline barely getting wet... I CLIMB DOWN TO GET HIM... Gary, still holding the rope, stands up, slowly, yup... He has huge scrape up one side of his chest, swirls around his neck, leads down the opposite side of his back, scraped up knee... No major bleeding, or broken bones or fractures of any kind... I stopped the bleeding with beach towels, after I yelled at him for wanting to go BACK ON THE SWING FOR A SECOND TRY... " "NO FUC WAY, MAN...!!" Gary wanted to go back on the swing fr a second try, so he can look all buff in front of the girls around, upsetting me... " Gary..!" Drop the swing.." " You look like, one swing away ,from being sold as Hamburg to the nearest Supermarket...!!! Most of us laughed ,at that joke... I didn't, and I said it... I let Gary keep the bloodybeac towel...
