Gone with the Wind- Rhett Butler's Best Lines

Haha! No one can master a quip like the King of Hollywood. Clark Gable plays Rhett Butler (and you can glimpse the amazing Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara). Enjoy. #jasonmovieguy #oscars2018

    I cant believe Clark Gable was nervous about playing Rhett Butler, the role fit him like a glove. What a performance!!

    Gable was leery about doing a period piece after the critical and box-office fiasco that had been 1937's "Parnell." One of the worst "big" movies of the 1930's and a major blemish on Gable's reputation as "the King." (According to legend, Gable's wife, Carole Lombard, would leave "Parnell" promotional materials around their home as a joke and to check her husband's ego.) After "Parnell," Gable didn't think he was a good fit for non-contemporary roles which why he was hesitant about accepting the role of Rhett Butler.

    The classic "don't give a damn" line is so different in the book. Rhett doesn't toss it out as a final insult. He says it quietly and sadly. His heart is broken beyond repair.

    That would obviously make more sense, like it seems like a much more natural response given the circumstances. I don't know why the actor playing Rhett performed the line so differently. I guess to make him look like a savage.

  • @isam1542

    @isam1542

    4 жыл бұрын

    I don't think they are as unsympathetic... I mean, Scarlett is nice, but... "I don't love Melanie" (actually she'd have better chances of getting Ashley if Melly died) "but I'll risk my life in Atlanta helping her give birth and I'll take her home". "I don't like my sisters, but I'll feed them because they're family". "I don't get on well with aunt Eulalia, but I'll send her money". She's a conniving girl who mastered in seduction because that's what her mother told her was right, but the moment her family needed, she hardened up and fed and clothed everyone in her family. Being a total bitch, but damn! She went all the way from pampered girl to main breadwinner, obviously she burned out and couldn't be nice about it. Many people burn out nowadays while taking care of their children, imagine a woman-child in her situation. I could very much empathize with her. If it were my family starving, I'd probably be a bitch about it, too. No wonder Melanie loves her and is loyal to a fault to her. Rhett is a bit of the same... Tough outside, tender inside. Pity they didn't have good therapists back then...

    @@isam1542 A great insight ❤ This is even more noticeable in the book, where you can detect in quite a few situations that Melanie was not such a goodie goodie as everyone around her perceived her to be. It's the same in real life- a lot of people who seem rough on the outside are very deep and emotional on the inside, often much more than those who are all sweet and nice to everyone.

    @@isam1542 I really appreciate the depth of your passion for the film and the novel. I stumbled upon these GWTW videos last week, and am fascinated by the interest in them and all the accompanying comments. Overjoyed is a better word. I read the book when I was 16, and finally got to see the film when it was reissued to be shown in theaters to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 1975. It's given me enormous pleasure all these years; different aspects of the story have resonated with me as I have passed through different stages of my life. In addition to the tantalizing and torturous love story, I was drawn to its depiction of how four distinct personalities coped with an upheaval in their civilization. How did you become so interested in GWTW?

    @@johnnypastrana6727 Are you kidding me? David Selznick went on a two year hunt to find the perfect Scarlett. Hundreds of Hollywood actresses, including the likes of Bette Davis wanted the Scarlett role desperately. Selznick could have gotten ANYONE he wanted to play Scarlett in his movie. VL didn't have to "sweeten the pot." At the time Ms. Leigh was an absolute knock out. Selznick liked what he saw, and George Cukor was totally impressed by her reading of the script and understanding of Scarlett. I saw some of Paulette Goddard screen test, it was okay, but nothing special. VL was much prettier too. Obviously the Scarlett role went to the right person; the proof is in the Oscar pudding. Lol Selznick wanted a legacy film in GWTW, and that's what he got. There was a lot of thought that went into the decision of who played Scarlett by David Selznick. VL was never accused of getting the role because she gave it up for David Selznick by anybody, including Olivier. Selznick was more of a professional than that. And regarding your comment about what Olivier said about VL. That's interesting, considering Olivier had quite the reputation of being a consummate philanderer himself. Lol

    So true she was stuck on Ashley that her love for Ashley blinded her love for Rhett and then also plus the way she dangle Ashley in front of him didn't help eaither but I think the last straw was when there daughter died and when he saw crying on Ashley's lap he had enough and I think he was hurt and knew that he couldn't compete with Ashley

    GWTW has followed me my entire life! Literally. I first read it in second grade because it was my mother's favorite book, but I omitted the long historical descriptions. In third grade I read the entire book. At 9 years old I saw the movie and was thrilled. I have to admit that by adulthood I had gotten over GWTW but will always cherish my youthful experience with this fabulous book and film.

    The full scene is amazing. Rhett is super happy to see her (he's really infatuated with her) because no respectable person had gone to visit him at that point. He's probably thinking "she didn't want me when I was rich and adored, and she comes to visit me in jail? Does she love me? Yay, she DOES love me, yay for me!" He's crushed when he realizes he was lying to him, and he tries to be as cruel as possible. He probably regretted that when he found out about Mr. Kennedy.

    Finesite Rhett was a flawed character but he didn’t try to hide it and pretend to be Mr perfect unlike scarlet who was flawed but still tried to act like an innocent damsel. That’s why some people don’t like scarlet. Rhett was an asshole, he knew it but still a good person deep down

  • @isam1542

    @isam1542

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@emmanuel3929 "still tried to act like an innocent damsel" She didn't TRY, she was forced to. Remember her education? Something as innocent as "eating as much as I want in the barbecue" was forbidden: she was fed before she went out so she would "eat like a little bird" when not at home. In the book, you get more details aboout it: Scarlett cannot accept any presents that are not flowers or sweets, because anything else "will give the impression that you are not a lady and will give the gentleman license to treat you not as such". She had to act the part of the sweet lady... Until the war came and she became the head and main breadwinner of her family, and then she had to throw the ladylike facade. So, no, Scarlett did not act like a proper lady because she was a hypocrite: she acted like a lady because she was forced to. In the book, she even complains about having to do that. Had a girl with her abilities been born in our times, she would have had an astonishing career, her own money, and sex with both Ashley (until she got bored) and Rhett. As for Scarlett, she took care of Melanie and her baby, to her EXTREME risk of being raped and murdered, just because she had promised. She was made the head and breadwinner of her family (including two sisters, a senile father, Melanie, a baby and ex-slaves which were family members at that point) before age 20, despite having been spoiled rotten during the first sixteen years of her life. Despite all that, she is the breadwinner for her family (swears against hunger for her and her people, not just for her). So she's not 100% selfish either, she's just been horribly educated. The reason why Rhett can be snarky and Scarlett can't is because Scarlett is more frustrated because of the facade she has to maintain. Back in those times, if you weren't a lady, you were screwed. So, Rhett can be a jerk, but Scarlett can't. It's not approved by society.

    @@isam1542 Scarlett is a terrible person. Stop trying to make excuses. She married Charles only to make Ashley jealous (even knowing that he was India's boyfriend) lied to her sister's boyfriend to marry him, always threated Melanie like shit even with her being the only friend that she had in the whole story and that worried about her feelings, Melanie was so gentle, sweet and caring with her and Scarlett was the devil in response, a liar, a hateful character, and that's the intention. Scarlett is not a good person, just deal with it.
