The first thing I typically do with someone who hits fat shots is I place an object behind the ball. In this video, I've got a towel that I rolled up about three times. It's maybe two inches high off the ground and I put it about a grip and a half, maybe a grip and two golf balls behind the ball. No perfect science here. I didn't measure that relative to like angle of attack. It's just about a ballpark of what I would normally use. If I make a swing where my angle of attack is steep enough and my low point is forward enough, I will miss the towel and It should prevent the fat shot.
What we're doing here is just trying to gather feels. When you take your normal setup and that towel is there, you might run right into the towel right away. In the takeaway you might feel like, during your downswing that really feels like it's coming steeper into the ball. Whatever you feel, that's fine. There is no perfect feel here.
There are three different reasons people hit fat shots.
The first reason has to do with the weight or pressure in the feet. During my setup, backswing or downswing, at any point, if I have more weight to my right or more pressure in my right foot, the odds of me hitting a shot increase.
Where the pressure is in your feet, throughout your swing dictates where the club is going to hit the ground. If from the top, I’m at 50/50, but I stay too far back on my right side too long, the odds of me hitting behind the ball increase.
Reason number two, for hitting behind the ball has to do with rotation. Where my chest or sternum points relative to the ground, is a big influencer of where my club head is. If you can get your sternum pointed forward of the golf ball with your irons, it helps move your low point. If I’m hitting fat shots, I want to feel that I'm trying to get my shirt buttons or chest forward of the golf ball and rotated in front of the golf ball.
The third reason for hitting fat shots has to do with the arms and hands. You can potentially eliminate hitting fat shots by adding left wrist bow, having your right wrist bent back at and point and by keeping your right arm bent.
Use the options in this video as a checklist. You are not supposed to do ALL of the stuff I recommend in this video to stop hitting fat shots. You should try to figure out why you hit the ball fat and then work your way backwards from there.

A very good checklist to go through. I was taught to have 70% of my weight in my right foot in my backswing, so that was what caused me problems. Also had problem with rotation which your videos on shoulder tilt helped me fix. Besides hitting fat shots, I also sliced and shot right of the target a lot. What helped me was focusing much more on externally rotating my right shoulder in stead of supinating my wrists (which I did way too much of) in the back swing to get my club more vertically straight at the top - it was brought to my attention after watching your video: "GOLF: How To Make The Perfect Backswing - Right Arm". Thanks for all your tips and tricks, Eric.

#3 is my issue, you're the only instructor I've seen that includes hinging and possibly shortening the right arm as a "cure". But I believe there is another dimension to this (not being contentious, you are the expert, but a PGA instructor at a clinic I took once told me this), and that is the speed of rotation, or swing speed. When I bend my trail wrist back I try not to "lock" it; i.e. I try to keep it somewhat loose so the club head can "release". Unfortunately, I don't generate much rotational speed so the wrists actually unhinge early, causing the club head to strike the ground behind the ball. The faster I swing, the less time the wrists have to unhinge, so the low point actually gets in front of the ball. In other words, "time" is a dimension in #3; the less of it you give the wrists to unhinge the more likely it is your low point will be where your sternum is pointing. At least that's what the instructor told me. Regardless, thanks for the video; it's certainly not the "same thing you see everywhere else on YT".

  • @CogornoGolf

Yep, I am very interested too not having done anything like this before. I took up golf at an older age and have an arthritic complaint that has always made me wonder to what extent my swing is limited by sub normal (whatever that means) flexibility. It might turn out that this is just an excuse for my inability to progress. Actually, this is all about one's aspirations in the game. There are plenty of people I play golf with who are perfectly happy to carry on as they are. In my case, I want to see how good I can get and would probably give up and go back to tennis if I didn't think I could improve significantly.

  • @johncreet1254

@@CogornoGolf I had my analysis done this weekend. Turned out to be possibly the most valuable sporting related session I've ever done. Even though I've always felt I had limited thoracic mobility, it turns out that rotation is not my problem. What is a problem is positioning (of the pelvis) through the swing. This is important for me because it is apparently putting a lot of stress on my right hip and the right side of my back. If I want to keep playing golf, I have no option but to fix it - otherwise I could end up with some more serious health problems. It has also helped me to understand why I find it so hard to do the right side bend you mention to create the steeper shoulder turn! I think this kind of analysis is a great thing for golfers to do; I wish I had known about it earlier.

When I first got into golf 2 years ago, I watched all of these online coaches talk about bowing your wrist in the backswing, downswing or whenever and it only made things worse. Most instructors I watch online seem to teach you to manipulate the swing so much and it shouldn’t be like that. The thing that finally helped me have an effortless swing was when I finally realized that you should be releasing the club to the target and not the golf ball. I never hear coaches talk about this. Releasing at the golf ball...this is a big reason for fat shots, thin shots, very little power, and many other things. You’re throwing away all that stored, effortless power when that should come after the ball, not at the ball. When you imagine you are throwing your club to the target and not at the ground, everything else in the swing typically should happen naturally. Same concept with any sport that involves throwing. Why aren’t coaching teaching this? Trying to bow your wrists through such a fast swing never helped me, only stressed my body more.

Hey Jonathan, Thanks for the message. I agree with you and talk about that concept often in person during lessons, not sure whether we have done a video on it or not but its something that definitely gets talked about! I don't agree that focusing on bowing the wrist is wrong or wont work or anything along those lines because Ive seen it work hundreds of times...myself included. Perhaps it didn't work for you and thats perfectly fine.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if my reply came out a bit negative. You are right, some things work for people that may not work for others. I have recently been following your videos and they have definitely been beneficial to me so thanks for posting!
