By the end of book 5 Victa is possibly my favorite character, she's amazing

Just Victra? Not the massively more high stakes plot? The epic action? The space battles? The Iron Rain and starShell combat? The duel between Darrow and Cassius? The introduction of Ragnar? Darrow reuniting with his mother? The tragic betrayal at the end? None of these things as well, just Victra...? hmmmmm OK then.

I don't typically like melodrama, but for some reason it works really well with me for Darrow. It's like we are reading the making of a living legend, he just happens to be narrating his own story so I can see where it would seem over the top lol
@maximeteppe7627
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to me the contrast between the brutal, visceral action and dystopic world and this very sentimental narration is the whole point. I could almost compare it to the Wolfenstein reboot, where this over the top killing machine is also introspective and grasping for some beauty and meaning. I get that it's over the top, but I think that without it, it would just be even more schlocky grimdark, and not half as interesting.

It’s so annoying that people got mad at you for not liking the way sexual assault was handled in a book.

People get aggressively upset when I say I hated how Matt’s rape was written in WoT and that I believe it to extremely damaging to readers. Like, EXTREMELY damaging. People have rose tinted glasses when it comes to their favorite franchises. They really love the book so, when people have a serious criticism involving those kinds of subjects, they lash out instead of acknowledging it, because they don’t want it to be there.
@Torsin2000

@@BirdMorphingOne (spoilers) Like he wrote how outrageous it was for Alanna to bond Rand without consent and likened it to rape, but when actual rape happened it was just glossed over as if it's ok because it was done to Matt. Also, the reactions he wrote for Nynaeve and Elayne where they laughed like it was the funniest thing in the world.
Glad you are enjoying Red Rising now! The last 100 pages of Golden Son are perhaps the best 100 pages that Pierce Brown has written. Absolutely incredible!

Absolutely
I'm probably one of those plot focused readers you mentioned, but my attachment to the characters was a slow boil. Not too much early on, but by the time I finished book 5, the connection to the characters and impacts from losses etc felt way more intense than I expected.
The melodrama is real, and either becomes less frequent or just more natural from book to book. The audiobook is honestly a step up from reading the book though. The narration adds so much.
It only gets better imo book 2 is much better than 1 and 3 is insanely good It's interesting to hear such a different take from mine. I'm a very big plot/lore/world building person so the lack of deep character interactions didn't bother me. And I totally noticed his patterns too lol u could tale which plan would work based on how much it gets explained lol
Im a sucker for good close up brawl action scenes in a book. the series as a whole is a little bit lord of the flies, a little bit star wars, a little bit space marines...etc. Im sure there's other comparisons. Also Ill forever love the phrase "Iron Rain".
I really wish we could hear more spoiler thoughts. I feel like I'm a very character driven reader, and what I love about the Red Rising series is the characters, so I'd love to hear more specifics on who Merphy is and isn't connecting with. Spoilers: I'm going to guess the 'emotional twists' that didn't pay off for Merph was Tactus, which I understand because a lot of people don't connect there, but just hits as one of the hardest parts for me.

Spoiler for Morningstar... His death hits harder when you realize in the third book i believe that he never really wanted to be Traitor and had kept the gift Darrow gave him in the hopes of performing for him one day
I wish we had more of Mustang in this book, but I'm glad that Momma Darrow talked some sense into our boy at the end about Eo. I finished this book a few days ago and the hangover is HARD to get through 💀
Sevro is the best. Honestly I think the third book slows down a lot, and adds a lot of character building which is very nice. Darrow spends too much time whining imo.
@NahlaAnwer

I personally didn't really get attached to the characters until the third book, but yes, hard agree about the ending! Though I also thought about DNF-ing the series because of it; that ending was just too upsetting and stressful to me that first time lol. I actually just finished my re-read of GS yesterday, and I'm 100% attached to everyone at this point, so now I'm feeling rather depressed about all the deaths. 💔
I agree with basically all of your thoughts on this series. I have finished Morning Star - but it is mostly too fast paced for me. I will say - some of the quotes you read would have made me cringe if I was physically reading but on audiobook the voice actor is SO GOOD it doesn't feel melodramatic.
Mustang was a great character. Keep reading if you like her. I kind of wished book 3 was from her POV given how she fit in to the story.

Maybe not the whole book, but certainly some, yeah
I absolutely loved this book series so i'm really excited that you are reading it! I hope you love it even half as much as i did.
I love hearing your thoughts. This series is what got me back into reading for enjoyment after a good decade of not. I've read the trilogy four times, love all the characters more and more each time. We even named our dog, Sevro Au Barkus! BUT, I just cannot get through books 4 and 5. DNFd both, did finally finish Iron Gold on the second attempt but it just pissed me off how it didn't progress the story at all. Dark Age is painfully slow, just couldn't continue. It makes me wonder if you'd prefer the pacing of books 4-5 better... But then there's the melodrama, which only gets worse, so maybe not! 😂
I had very similar thoughts about books one and two. I was debating finishing the series and I'm so glad I did because book 3 is my fav book of the year so far which was so surprising! I decided to continue based mostly on the ending of book 2. I hope you like book 3 even more, I bet you will 😊
So you voiced a lot of how I felt about the first 2 books. I really loved the 3rd book. I knew who some characters were better, I cared more about many of the characters and I could follow the plot better. I think you might like the 3rd one better than the first 2.
Yes! The way you described Darrow explains exactly what I was thinking in Red Rising. He's very intense all the time and that perspective is the perspective we see the entire world from.
Just here to say I'm very happy i found your channel! I love seeing others who gush with book love unapologetically! Funny aside, my two closest friends and I love sharing books but im notorious for wanting mine back for my shrine. Im too close to them!
Wait. This isn’t a GBA game.
I'm currently reading Morning Star and this series is DEFINITELY one of my favorites of all time. But I loved Darrow from the start. He's such a beautiful in such an unfortunate situation 😭
Is anyone else just a sucker for melodrama, fastest way to my ironic enjoyment meter.
I love this series so much. Listening to the audio book while on long haul drives was a wild experience

Following this up with the narrator makes this book series for me. The way he reads makes you want to drive for another five hours
The third book is my favourite of both triologies.. can't wait for you to read it. There's a better build, more emotions, more of the other characters too.
Glad to see this... I'm going to be reading it next week. I agree abt Darrow!
It arrived yesterday. *Big Merph is watching you.*
Can’t wait hear what you think of book 3
The action sequences in these books are soo good! And the politics are just soo interesting
Ok so spoilers for book 1 and 2: I wonder if part of the reason we don't get attached to characters in book 1 is Darrow is trying to to relate and humanize the golds and in 2 he let's himself like them
A lot of cool characters introduced in this book and a lot of cool action and plot twists, it was a good read
I always compare red rising with chess xD I love that you did that too
Good to know the series gets better. Currently about half way through Red Rising, and it's pretty good, but hasn't had anything that's really taken it to the next level for me yet.
FULL agree on the pacing. This + LOTR are two of my favorite series and after recently finishing LOTR I can't help but notice that LOTR is like a nice pleasant stroll whereas this bad boy is just pedal to the metal from start to finish (OH PS: you get LOTS more Mustang later on)
Red rising (at least the first trilogy, I'm iffy on trilogy 2 mostly due to writing style change) is a series the RISES in quality with each book. Book 3 is so awesome and chock full of those character moments you've been looking for
I literally just started it (Golden Son) 😂 Perfect timing Merph
I came i saw i sat in the corner and read a book.
If you read into the continuation series - you get more mustang and other characters in Iron Gold and Dark Age The continuation I feel is a massive jump in writing style and character development
I want to read a Mustang focused book after this one.
I'm glad it's spoiler free. I want to read this.
I blew through the first 3 books in this series in a matter of days. I loved the world, I loved that everyone is pretty terrible (hello First Law). I needed a break before taking on books 4 and 5 though.
I think the issues you had with the melodrama would be less prevalent if you listened to the audiobook which I'd very highly recommend
If you continue on in the Saga, Iron Gold and Dark Age, they have multiple POV’s. Same world. Same Roller Coaster Ride. But you’re out of Darrow’s head for a lot of chapters!
Okay so, the way you first DNF’d Red Sister before trying it again, then enjoying the sequel more, and the way you didn’t love Red Rising but liked Golden Son more, I think you would have the same experience with Powder Mage, where the first book doesn’t work for you, but the sequels are so fast paced and action packed that you’ll enjoy reading them. :)
I personally did connect to the characters from the start, especially Darrow.
hello im early
Unrelated but makes me want to play golden sun again
I couldn't disagree more! I just finished it a few mins ago. The lines you pulled from were from VERY intense, life-threatening moments where he's having to fight the fear of dieing to keep his head to get out of the situation, the second is to show the frantic pace he has and a fog of war. This series is shaping up to be my favorite in a very long time. Everyone who likes action should read this book! I cried, and took down lots of thoughts throughout, and was on the edge of my seat so often that I had to put the book down and walk away and get the courage up to keep reading! It's wonderful! To each their own, though. Can't wait to start the next one!
I would say that Darrow is melodramatic. But I think he is trying to be. He is playing this character of the reaper up to the golds, in my opinion, to like infiltrate and defeat them. So I would say he is purposefully over the top melodramatic to pull the golds in to get them to believe in his mystique and follow him
I'm in the minority but I love books 4 and 5 more than the 1st trilogy, mainly because its written in multiple POV. And while I love Darrow sometimes being in head is exhausting.
You might enjoy the second trilogy more since Pierce breaks from only giving us Darrow's PoV.
I've subscribed to this channel just for the far off review for Dark Age. If you think the action is fast paced in GS, then I can't wait for how you feel in DA
Are P.O.V changes a common thing?
I always thought that I was really good at predicting plot twists, but these three books just showed me how wrong I was lol Sevro reamins my favorite character till the end of the trilogy, and my problem with Darrow is that he is too idealistic, at some points in the third book I would just call him naive, not EVERYONE can be turned to the good side.
I completely about the character disconnect
Golden daughter Merphy
I love the moment where Darrow and Cassius are dueling and Darrow turns to Cassius’s dad and says “Your son is going to die today.” It’s simple. It’s disrespectful. I love it.
Wow, I can't believe you don't like Darrow. It would be much better in third-person, though.
I just started reading this series, am almost done with this book, and I was curious about your opinion on it. I completely agree with all of your points. I think my expectations were too high because of Mike's Book Reviews. It's a really good book, but it isn't a great book. Those quotes you pulled from Darrow are an example of what's holding this series back for me. It still feels like high-level YA because of that crap. And I am not a fan of "Will they? Won't they?" romance. It feels like cheap drama. Shit or get off the pot, man. Sevro, Lorn, and Mustang are the best characters, even in their smaller roles.
Sorry to say the formulaic approach Brown uses does not change. It made book 3 a bit of a drag to get through. Also, the melodrama doesn’t get any better. I will say, the ending ties up a lot of loose ends. It is such a great way to end things, I was annoyed when I found out he decided to continue the series. 🙄
Hmm, I find it interesting that you say this series is more for plot focused readers, I guess our tastes are different here. I am attached to many characters and would disagree with there being not many character moments. I think most of them have a really strong and different personality which they bring to they page. Well, I still think you will like book 3 and maybe especially the other trilogy, because we get more character viewpoints there.

Also, I think the prose is on par with Patrick rothfuss ^^
I disliked 1, was middle of the road for 2 and loved 3. I read 3 purely because of the last chapter of 2 and was not disappointed.
The newer series the second trilogy it turns grim dark less on grim and more on just DARK and it’s multi POV so try to finish and get into the other series you will like it more
Why aren’t you listening to the audio books!? It’s a non negotiable with his books
Maybe you'll like the Sequel Trilogy more lmao.
