A great movie that went unnoticed by the American public and thankfully acknowleged by her peers. A time piece that travels through many wars with a poignant message. The soundtrack also travels through those times with great success. One of my favorite soundtracks.

When I was a little girl I saw Ms. Midler at a restaurant in Dallas Texas but I was too afraid to speak to her. Then when I was 18 I finally met The Devine Miss M. I had 8 long years of regret for not speaking the first time and it wasn't slipping through my fingers that time so I spoke to her. Ms. Midler was so gracious, so beautiful, and so glamorous. Truly the nicest celebrity (besides B.B. King) I have ever met and I've met quite a few now at age 45. Ms. Midler has always been my 2nd favorite actress after Bette Davis. I hope to meet her again one day but I doubt lightening will strike a third time but you never know. But at least when I'm old and drinking my dinner through a straw I won't regret not speaking to one of the most talented actresses known to man.

All the actresses nominated were in movies that, in my opinion, have been greatly underrated and almost forgotten. _Switch, For The Boys, The Addams Family, Fried Green Tomatoes_ , and the criminally underappreciated _Frankie & Johnny_ ...what a wonderful collection of films that not a whole lot of people remember. And yes, I know that both _Fried Green Tomatoes_ and _The Addams Family_ were box office hits, but do people ever talk about them anymore? So sad.

I believe Mark Rydell also directed her in The Rose so she came full circle with him. Bette’s also said For The Boys was one of the few films she’s made that she’s truly proud of. I could be wrong but it seems like Hollywood has never really known what do with Bette, if she’d been around in the 40’s with her brassy personality she would’ve been the absolute queen of musicals and comedies at MGM.

If "For the Boys" was NOT produced by Midler's company I think it would have won an academy award. It was a very underrated film, but Midler and co. made a lot of mistakes--the schlocky old age makeup and their unwillingness to take a graphic stance against the war. It was a good film in spite of itself--I just wish it had more of a point and didn't rely on movie-of-the-week theatrics.

No honey. The Golden Globe is given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who are journalists who cover American films and television for their markets back home in their countries. The Academy Award or “Oscar” is a totally different award (that sometimes goes to the same recipients in the motion picture categories as the Golden Globe) but is given by the motion picture academy whose voting members are professionals in the film industry.
