Golden Age Comic Book Tear Seals and Spine Reinforcement!

All Star Comics 55 Conservation Episode 5: Cover deacidification and paper mending.
In this video we continue a Golden Age Comic Book conservation project on this copy of All Star Comics #55 from 1950. We review our progress so far and take a few more measurements before performing an aqueous submersion bath for cleaning and deacidification of the comic book cover followed by tear seals and spine reinforcement!
The materials and methods I use are archival and are reversible. If done properly, they do not result in a purple restored label from CGC.

As always great work Dr P. For the Calcium Hydroxide saturated. I recall you adding more water when running low. When is there a need to start a new batch of the Calcium Hydroxide saturated?

Thanks! I go through the stuff rather quickly, so need to constantly make a new batch. It’s literally daily when I’m in full conservation mode. I usually just add water and shake. If everything goes into solution and there is no precipitate, I need to add Ca(OH), which I do at 1/4 teaspoon per liter. If you use it more slowly, or if you notice that your solution above the precipitate is not totally clear, make a new batch because you probably have some Ca carbonate forming. Best to keep your solution capped up airtight to slow this reaction. 👍🏽
