Golda Meir: The Girl from Milwaukee who Became Prime Minister | Great Jewish Heroes | Unpacked

New channel alert / @todayunpacked
- Help us make more videos like this one. Donate today. jewishunpacked.com/morevideos Best known for being Israel’s first (and only to date) female prime minister, Golda Meir, started life in Kiev before moving with her family to Milwaukee in 1906. After a quick stint in Denver, she immigrated to Israel in 1921.
One of only two women who signed Israel’s Declaration of Independence, Meir served as a labor minister and as foreign minister, and in 1969 became prime minister.
Though some of her five years as prime minister were controversial, her commitment to helping the Jewish people and the State of Israel remain her legacy, earning her a spot as an integral part of Israeli history.

People do not know that during the entire time Golda Meir was Prime Minister she was suffering from lymphoma, cancer. She received her treatments every Monday. But, her iron will and her commitment to Israel kept her going, even during the Yom Kippur War when the outcome was uncertain and national catastrophe loomed.

Awesome video. Thanks for doing it. My grandmother was also born in Ukraine and then moved to Milwaukee. She was so proud of her friend Golda Meir. But my grandmother was far from a valedictorian in school. Fortunately her truant officer was Lizzie Black Kander, who went on to found the Settlement Cookbook, with help from my grandmother. That's far from helping found the State of Israel. She lived a good life and she still lives through my memories of her cooking and her love of her grandchildren.

The truth is that almost every person in Israel is not original, but people who converted to Judaism over a thousand years ago. A Israeli geneticist has proven this fact. The truth is that it was a lie to say that Jews and Palestinians were fighting for thousands of years. The official Ottoman census shows a minuscule 0.3% Jewish population in 1878. It was only just prior to the creation of Israel that Palestine saw a mass immigration of k Zrs .

@@theredboneking Not long ago many DNA testing has been done in the west bank and Gaza and many Palestinian Muslims were found to have Jewish DNA and lots of elders have knowledge of their ancestors through family stories and knowledge of their ancestors conversions to Islam. Islam arrived in Palestine in 636 during the reign of the 2nd caliph of Islam Omar ibin al kattab they attacked Jerusalem which was under the rule of Byzantine Romans and after a 4 month seige of butchery and bloodshed the city came under Islamic rule. By the 9th century the shia caliphate the fatamid dynasty invaded Palestine and massacred Christians for siding with the Roman Byzantine who had attempted to regain their conquered land... Judaism and Christianity had been present in Jerusalem and Israel Judea and Samaria many years before Islam was even born so to claim that Israel and Palestine are Muslim lands is both a lie and completely false... After the defeat of the first crusaders Muslims became the majority and the entire Mediterranean coast was captured followed by a series of the massacres of the Christian people.and a genocide that spread all the way to Damascus and beruit.. Islam became the established religion of Palestine by the 9th century and developed into becoming the majority religion of the area through the mamluk era of between 1250-1516. So Islamic caliphs didn't enter Palestine as preachers and converted people into Muslims they inhereted Palestine after they invaded Palestine numerous times and the people may have converted to Islam but in no way can Palestine ever be considered Muslim lands

Genetics proves the Jews are the native people of Israel, and the Arabs (who falsely take the name palestinian) are from Arabia, not Israel. In addition, the Ottoman records show the majority of the people, living in Israel, were Jews, not Arabs.

As a young girl, I read about Golda and was impressed by her. Btw, I am very much a capitalist. Free medical care does not mean one supports Socialism. It means one does not believe the relief of suffering should be a profit making enterprise. Not one one person in the world is exempt from the potential of illness.

I appreciate your thoughts. Also, societies work better when the fire department, police, schools, libraries and military are supported by the people collectively. One huge step would be to get the money out of politics so that the needs of communities are better served by their representatives who are not corrupted by moneyed interests.

Another thing that people did not know was the military leadership crisis Meir had to face at the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. They knew it was coming but they did not know when. When it did come they were totally caught off guard. Defense Minister General Moshe Dayan had a nervous breakdown telling the Prime Minister, "everything I told was wrong!" She had to think quickly and quietly replaced the ailing Dayan, a national hero, without telling the Israeli public for fear of discouraging them during their darkest hour. Still, Israeli troops were pushed back and survival of the nation was not assured. As a precaution, she ordered cyanide pills from the army in case she was captured by the enemy. She was not going to be taken alive.

Golda was an icon, an iron lady and alioness. I am proud she was my Prime Minister in 1973. If skmeone ealse had hold Israeli leadership those days, may be Israel would not have overcome this war. Golda was braver than all men in her government. Nobody could have come close to her. Nobody could have handeled a candel for her. RIP Golda! UR Israel nation will stay for ever. Bravo lioness!!!

She was a great patriot but her story is conflicted. She sacrificed her marriage and parenting. Most importantly she is blamed for not mobilizing the army sooner when she knew the war was to start on Yom Kippur.I have read that she did not preemptively strike first because of Kissinger’s threats not to help.Over 2300 soldiers were killed, including my cousin,as a result. We all know she suffered greatly as a result but this is cold comfort to everyone who lost a son or brother.

Ayn rand was jew also her Jewish name was Ma'ayan (spring) Rand She had an opposit calculation ideology then Golds. To bring haunted jews from all over the worled to poor new country you canot do it with the agenda of Obioctivism cruelty only by Socislizm merciful. United nation glue can exist with judaidm religion but can't exist with jews cultur. The jews cultur is much more higher then the religion that built to preserve the norm/laws/behavior at the ugly dark roten (2000AD-4000AD) enchant times.

It seek for tile ground and found it ,and grow uncheck . This disunity was aloud to spread with our help ; we gave up Almighty God for the Governance of man and we have lost our way. There is one Almighty God and no other we must give praise to him and no other. All praise to Almighty God amen .

When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons. Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us. Golda Meir
