Gold Recovery - Final weigh-in after 3 years, was it worth it ?

Ғылым және технология

Just a bit of a ramble about the economics of Gold recovery and somewhere in there I even weigh how much I have accumulated after 3-ish years of hobby level nights and weekends.
There is no patreon and I promise never to refer to myself in the third person.

    Good to see a life sign from you !!! You are a great inspiration for me from day #1 and the way, you handle your hobby the way you treat things, the way you find soutions for processessing your material in a reasonable and say "least hazardous way" possible really was a huge inspiration for me and encouraged me to start following your foot trails. You covered so many interesting topics on ypur route. The way you do it, is sympathetic to me. You are blessed with a gifted mindset. Patient, analytical, inventious, respectful. And you influenced me in a more deeper way, looking closer to the topic, encouraged me to start trying and figure out things on my own. I am 45 and run a server network trading business for 20 years, which really started to bore me. Now I have a new hobby and enough "ressources" left and right to try out things. I started welding, building, milling, grinding, experimenting, and best of all: learning. Thank you for being a true inspiration and making me -curious- again. Keep it up. Sebastian

    @@successfulengineer maybe someday with the videos, I get so side tracked with working on other inventions it is very hard to do. I do not think people understand how much time it takes to edit and set up - which is why I say your videos are always appreciated it is nice to see the dedication along with honest information, you do not get a lot of honest information with gold refining which is why I try to steer people here, You break it down to individual chips and material which is very important to see, it is not a get rich quick thing and it requires safety at every turn. Very nice haul on gold though I only managed 3 ounces this year with time off. Look forward to seeing your next adventure.

    This is the second time watching this video. I gotta say to those people talking about money and if it's worth it or not are not in it for the same reasons you and I are. This is a hobby for most of us, a hobby is for fun! Some people have hobbies and spend thousands to tens of thousands a year on it. We are fortunate to have a hobby that gives us something of value in return!! It can't get better than that!! I must say it has been a pleasure watching your videos. I watched all of your ewaste videos either in the last few days or some a few months ago. You have the best ewaste KZread channel out here. Sreetips is really good with karat scrap, but if you wanted to be the biggest and best out there you could do it. You'd have to put out weekly videos, but you could shoot to 100k subs in a year and probably 250k subs in 2 years!! I don't know what kind of money you could make with 250,000 subs but it's gotta be good. We need someone like you to inspire and teach us. I hope one day you decide to go all the way with this because you definitely have exactly what it takes to do it my friend!! No matter what, I look forward to seeing any new ewaste video you put out!! Have a GREAT Day My Friend!!! P.S. I'll be rewatching some of your videos again in the future!!

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Shane, yes, I remember that took a bit of doing, what I did was: buy a stepper motor controller board that had pulse and direction inputs, the direction input was tied high or low to get the direction right, for the pulse input, I bought a little 555 timer board. It happened to work out in my case that the 555 timer could run slow enough to drive the stepper motor without having to ramp it up. One common problem with steppers is that you often have to ramp up the speed, otherwise they wont run properly. In my case I then just used a small belt to drive an old treadmill roller directly from the stepper motor. Feel free to ask if that didn't answer your question.

  • @successfulengineer

    Hi Jay, if you are getting Copper when you drop Gold with AR, you must be using too much precipitant. Are you washing the precipitated Gold powder properly (boiling water and hot HCL washes?) Another trick that can work is to wash the precipitated powder as clean as possible with boiling water washes (to remove the HCl), then use dilute HNO3 to dissolve the Copper out. Wash with water and melt.

    Some capacitors contain Scandium. Is it economically feasible to recover? Spot price runs from 4 USD to 20 USD per gram.

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you are looking at the economics of it, then it comes down to effort vs. value. If you happen to have millions of the same capacitor that you know contains a good amount of element-x, then you can set up a system that is optimized to recover that element. As long as you have somewhere reliable to sell it, it will be good. For me personally, Gold recovery was always more about the Gold, not really about the financial value. Almost everyone on the entire planet will see a chunk of Gold and be impressed and almost no-one on the planet has heard of Scandium.

    Hi Maria, I started at a pretty low level with minimal cost really. Chemical cost and availability depends very much on what country you are in. I was quite lucky that New Zealand is fairly unregulated, so we can buy most chemicals (within reason, as long as they are not used as narcotic precursors). My guess would be that you could get started with some basic glassware and chemicals and recover and refine a few grams of Gold for well under US$200. If this is something you think you may want to try, have a look for videos showing Gold recovery from ram fingers. Unfortunately I never made a good video about this, but you will find there are quite a lot of them on KZread. Feel free to ask questions if anything is not obvious from the videos.

    @@successfulengineer that was with a friend helping and him taking the initiative to set up social media pages, leaflet local shops and be very active in locating E-waste. It also became less time consuming to sell a lot of broken down items on ebay etc. I truly feel it would be impossible to get 'rich' doing this as a hobby if you were to refine all the precious metals yourself. Your channel helped a lot, first time trying to recover gold from flat black chips.. Your video was invaluable. Still messed it up though 😂

  • @successfulengineer

    I have no idea, I can't imagine that it is really possible to artificially cap the price. There is a paper market and physical market, and I guess things will get interesting if they spread too far apart. I don't honestly think we have seen the peak yet at US$1700, but I have no idea where it would go.

    What best method is it to make AP ? And is AP made from HCL & hydrogen peroxide (3%) or from HCL and bleach ??

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Take 30 ish percent HCl and cover your material. Add a "splash" of Hydrogen Peroxide, bubble air through the solution, depending on the material, foils should be seen floating in a day or two, all foils released in a few weeks. You only need to add Hydrogen peroxide once, continue to bubble air though the solution always. When the AP starts giving off a white milky residue and powder, the AP is saturated with Copper and you need to add more fresh HCl to keep going.

  • @ninjabothandyman6063

    @@successfulengineer brilliant thanks for the great advice kind sir !! So I don't need bother at all when my AP solution turns that damn near brownish/blackish color to then decant, rinse with distilled, then create new batch of AP; filtering the solution I am replacing ?? Then of course store filters somewhere with which they remain moist. Best NOT allowing filters drying entirely. Is that myth only or does some kernel of legitimacy lie within this statement ??

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ninjabothandyman6063 Nope, once your AP is going you basically never have to make new AP again and you never have to add Hydrogen Peroxide again. You just have to remove some of the Copper saturated AP and replace it with fresh HCL. You will end up filtering the AP anyway to recover your foils, then just store the AP in a HDPE container and use it again next time. Remember that any AP you are getting rid of is saturated with dissolved Copper, it is super duper poisonous to plants and animals and you will need to go through the standard waste treatment process or ideally pay a waste treatment company to take it. Never dissolve AP with water, only fresh HCL. Adding water will cause the Copper to come out of solution as Copper Chloride and make it impossible to filter.

  • @successfulengineer

    I have tried that around here, but I think there are just too many people that are too aware. I'm sure a lot of the scrap jewelry getting sold online here is from people that basically do that as job. My best find ever was actually finding some ugly black desert spoons that had numbers like 999 and 700 stamped on the back, ended up with about 20 ounces of Silver for $2 ! Then I felt guilty and donated $100 to the shop since they were a community salvation-army type operation.

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dennis, yeah, your intuition is exactly right, I'm sure you will find that the average modern computer has far more value in Copper than Gold. I believe that is pretty much how the big refineries work anyway, Copper pays the bills and precious metals are the cream on top! I have never really worked out the Gold value per computer, but it is probably not very high, I would guess certainly under $5, maybe under $2 if it is a particularly bad example!
