Gold Mafia - Episode 2 - Smoke & Mirrors | Al Jazeera Investigations
South Africa’s most notorious money launderer is known as Mo Dollars. He cleans millions of dollars from the sale of illicit cigarettes through gold. Confidential documents expose an intricate web of shelf companies and fake invoices that hide a multi-million-dollar operation in plain sight.
When the Gold Mafia’s money laundering business outgrows its existing infrastructure, it takes over banks and government departments. Ledgers reveal the names of bank, immigration, and customs officers, and a central bank governor - all recipients of the mafia’s generous bribes.
Undercover reporters strike a deal with a competing mafia, one that’s close to the Zimbabwean government. It promises to launder $1.2 billion of dirty cash and guarantees access to executive power.
Gold Mafia, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit looks at how society’s obsession with gold underwrites a global shadow economy. The undercover team infiltrates the rival gangs that turn dirty cash into gold, which is then sold around the world. Through exclusive interviews with whistleblowers from within the criminal syndicates, investigators obtain the blueprints of the money laundering operations that service southern Africa’s economic and political elite. And the investigation leads to the highest offices of state.

No courage is needed, just critical planning and thinking are all you need, which many of you have failed to do since 1980. Instead, you ran a mile to other countries. Look at France, Kenya and your neighbour South Africa took to the streets, but most Zimbwabweans were praying for salvation. You will continue to suffer if you don't wake up soon and take action. I will not be surprised come December and your president will still be in power.

@dorothymtetwa3844 and the foreigners are in control of your resources. While the real Zimbabweans citizens are suffering. Pattni was in kenya he corrupted the country, and now he came to drain Zimbabwe. Wake up, no one will come to fight for you if you yourselves are not fighting. May God protect your country from the evildoers.

Human beings are story driven animals above all else. This is the “bad guy wins” story-trope, we’ve seen it over and over and over again. And we are all actually okay with this, just look at history (his-story). We chose pattern over novelty because it’s safer to do what we know. Herd mentality is the same thing. When the credits roll on episode four, most of the herd will begin dispersing until only the stage is left at the scene. We enjoy thinking that the feeling of injustice we experience means we are good people. Doing something about it is like attacking the screen when Thanos snaps his fingers. To us this is a story not reality, don’t deceive yourself into thinking what you’re feeling means you’re going to actually do something. There is nothing you can do except contemplate the moral of it at best, and continue with your own affairs. This is the nature of people. We are all flawed.

All the people in this documentary are criminals and you want the Lord to protect them.
Just the thought of this documentary being released few months before the elections in zimbabwe gives me a little hope that maybe things will change this time after elections because this has never happened before,, so this happening few months before elections we Zimbabweans are just keeping our fingers crossed and praying for a change

What will change the outcome of Zim elections yet the very same syndicates who make sure the outcomes of the election poll favours are still in office?? No ZEC member have been removed from office due to these allegations, the judiciary is the same, etc...

Very bold reporting. Thank you for such an informative documentary. Keep up the good work.
As a late teen watching this am so much disheartened because i also hear about this in my country commonly known as 'WASH WASH'
Criminals have captured our future. State capture is rife in Africa. We are rich but nothing to show for it.This docu series deserves an award.

@@collernwellbdonegogolkotok5406 as are you! If you think these crimes are not affecting the rest of the World then that's a sad thing to be guilty of, we all speak and stand or we all go down together!
This so sad. All country's resources goes to the pockets of a few individuals yet they blame sanctions everyday. They even sent civilians to seat at gate of US embassy in Harare with no shelter, toilets, food and all the basic human needs. It's so so SAD! 😞
Well done Al Jazeera ☝️👏👏👏 expose all the crooks & make more documentaries like these 👏👏👏
Thanks the Aljazeera team
This is really sad for Zimbabwe and all of Africa 💔, these reporters r really brave for doing all this though. Thank you
Watching it with my village people on my recently purchased projector, the villagers and myself are not happy at all😢

Truly speaking I would just like to say thank you for sharing the information with all the pple who needed to know everything about what's happening in our home country 😥💔... Like a lot of us we still speechless about everything that's going on and we all never expected it 🙇🏽♀️💔... But wat I can say is that "God shall deal those pple who pretend to be "Man of God" while they're not💁🏽... Won't mention his name but thank you though 🙇🏽♀️🫂

Phenomenal Journalism. Kudos to Al Jazeera.
You deserve awards for such outstanding exposure
Well done Al Jazeera 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you Aljazeera for your documentary. What I hope to see you do a documentary on is all the minerals looted from Africa and who benefited from them because the looting started centuries ago and we only now get to hear about looting because it suits some powers.
I feel happy and encouraged to see this undercover woman... kudoz mama. Thank you aljazeera for exposing these selfish and greedy humans.
