    1) I wind my own pickups with an old school hand drill, the kind you crank yourself. Mine gets about 4.25 turns of the chuck per crank of the handle. When I get into a groove, I can get about 1-1.3 cranks a second (60-80 crank turns a minute). That gets me about 250-340 turns per minute on the coil itself. With a minute off here and there, that gets me a full Strat coil in a half-hour or less. If I was running a business, I'd go broke with that production speed, but since I only need to make a few a year for myself, that's fine. And as I tell folks, if I had to get in the car and drive to the nearest music store to buy a pickup, it'd probably take me close to an hour for the drive and getting service at the counter. The other reason why I hand wind is that I bought my magnet wire at a wrecker's for $2 a pound. I was able to get many gauges from #36 through to #43, with plenty of #42. Because these are 5lb spools, they do NOT turn, and wouldn't if yo perched them on a swivel platform, So being able to feel that the wire is encountering physical resistance and might snap if pulled too tight is a good thing, supplemented by the ability to stop instantly and avoid tearing the wire. 2) I like to use teflon plumber's tape to cover the coil. Not only is it cheap, but is an appropriate width, and conforms to the coil very nicely. No adhesive, either, so you can unwind it without tearing the coil. 3) I have an original Teisco gold foil here, awaiting rewinding. This is one of the models that kinda sorta LOOKS like a humbucker, until yo realize those adjustable screws are way too close to the edge t have a coil underneath them. And you'd be right. The coil and magnet sit in the middle of a soft iron baseplate, One side of the baseplate is bent upwards, with a little fold. The screws go into threaded holes on the raised edge. Because it's soft iron, the baseplate has two roles. First it conducts the bottom pole of the bar magnet out and upwards, such that the raised edge is opposite polarity to the upward facing side of the bar magnet. The second function - and I'm speculating here - is that is raises the inductance of the coil, as more iron generally does. And yes, the gold foil is not metal, and merely decorative. It covers the hole where the magnet is, and nothing more.

That fuzz was sounding kinda strange with this pickup so I stomped the OD just to kill off some highs and ad mids and boom... Time machine. Sounded like an old SG and Marshall just cranked up with a big muff till its killing its self: browning out and over stroking the speakers. That LP comment is classic LOL good one. I love my records now, I got a ton of vintage vinyl my studio room smells like an old ladies purse from them. Thanks again bro I appreciate your time and support as well as the kind words.

    Thanks for watching and taking the time to type a comment Wayne. This testing guitar is actually pretty darn light, still not as light as cardboard but I guess I am just used to playing sitting down from my past recording ventures. I've never been much of a live player except in 1 heavy metal band. Now that being said the oak guitar I am building weighs a metric ton. I wouldn't be surprised if that big boat anchor doesn't scale to 20-25 lb Its a real lead sled. Not a play all night gig guitar for sure. I got a friend Max who is a gigging blues musician and he wanted me to bring it to a show for him to try once its done and I was like ok... thinking yeah and you have a bad back... good luck. Thanks again Wayne and the idea of a super light practice instrument to carry around as you do things is a great idea.

    looks like a cheap and fun way to waste some spare time , i think im going to try to recreate a few of the pickups you have build and maibe make them look a little nicer considering stacking different kinds of pickups on top of eachother (those with a lot of high end on top of one with a lot of low end) and see if i can create a good sounding pickup thats not out there yet like a alumitone pickup over the goldfoil pickup or a humbucker made from two types of single coil pickups as for preventing the wiring from going outside the bobbin during the winding , you could make a small funnel type device that stops the wire from going outside the borders of the bobbin , 2 pieces of bend plastic set in between the bobbin and you feeding the wire should be enough

    Loving the heckfire out of this channel. At first when you put the plates and the magnets together I thought that you'd need to line the magnets with tape or something to soften the 4 sharp corners of the magnet so it didn't break the wire as you wound. But it's obviously fine, nice one! Another DIY winder here. I use a cheap modified pottery wheel that winds in both directions, I've only made 3 single coils so far but I'm inspired to do a wood P90 next, thanks for the inspiration!

    This has a very interesting sound. I don't like it completely clean, personally. But when you give it a load of reverb and drive I think that really brings out the distinctive character that this pickup has. It seems to have the low output of a single coil but the gritty snarl of a p90. I've been going through a load of your videos and I definitely think I'm learning from them. I'm currently dealing with some repetetive strain injury in my hands but when I finally get up and running again, I plan to build a 12 string lap steel and I don't think you need to be told that finding pickups which are wide enough for that would not be easy. I also simply don't want to spend loads of money having them custom made so I want to build them myself. I'm thinking a pair of p90s will do the job I want. Thanks for the inspiration, you have certainly earned my sub!

    This is a great channel, I'm subscribe since 5 videos ago, but just got an idea. You could make a video of a DIY mic of some common model like a SM57 to review your demos so we can hear a much more clear representation of your achieved tones, instead of using the camera mic. It is supposed that the SM57 is the most popular to this type of reviews so if you could approx to that one maybe it will be easier to us to compare tones, but whatever decent mic placed on your speakers could do a big difference I guess. So, it's a great job you're doing here, very informative channel, I like the way you think, very sceptical of all the blablabla in this guitartone world. Congratulations!...and that pickup sounds cool, at least in the room. Thanks for all the knowledge shared!

Safety last LOL. I have been LIT up by an old Ampeg before. I was playing a bass through an SVT 8-10 in an old shed full of gear that was only powered off of a single line. Spark came straight out of the microphone and hit me right in the gums. Kept going and it happened again and again. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write such a positive and kind message Lazy Octopus. I find it both strange and awesome that many of those old "department store" guitars such as Ecco, Danelectro, Harmony, Global, The Japanese Teisco type stuff, etc. Were thought of as junk or "less than" back in their day. Say maybe some teenage kid got poked fun at because he didnt have a "real" guitar but now, the pickups are held in high regards and you are the coolest Hipster on Austin city limits if you take one on stage and plug it into a delay with tons of drippy reverb and play nonstop 1/4 notes... They are coveted at this point, this made me think hey... I bet first acts will do this one day, maybe I should pick up some for cheap now. NOPE it already happened. I was late to the party, but Squires are still cheap, just like Epiphones... I think if you could get some and just store them in pristine condition you would be making an incredible investment with out much risk. Theres some kid out there right now with a squire bullet strat feeling like if he only had the "real" guitar he'd be a "real" guitar player but, I have played several bullets that were Absolutely Amazing! and Also several Fender American standards that are dead flat duds like a concrete parking block with strings. This is why I have never bought a guitar online, I want to hold it and feel it, every piece of wood is different.

ThaT POOR TESTIN MULE GUITAR ! nice save on the foil from the make up case behind every man is a great woman , hats of to Heather for the brave sacrifice and gomti says hi.... i have to say i was really really impressed with the clean sound out of your diy GF pick up .i loved the part where you were winding the coil on the sewing machine . i cant believe that wire fixed itself ? that was insane and good catch , i bet your heart sank until you checked it and saw it was fixed wtf ... . really enjoyed this one , and man did your rig sound pro , i am sure most of it was that pick up as it did have a very open , natural sound , i was really impressed your set up is so cool with that tube preamp , this is the type of sound i love and you dont hear it very often , i am jealous , oh wait ... i HAVE a tube preamp ... thanks man . this video totally made my day . now i am curious about the gold foil pick up in my old beater decca guitar , it definitely has a thing as i tested it with a few pedals and amps . it ohms out at 3.5k and i seem to remember poking around on it lead me to believe it was one of the preferred types . i paid ten for the guitar as it needed work and my kid begged me to buy it maybe 13 now that i think to be honest i bought a bridge and have to try to get that one to intonate . i was tempted to pull it and put in it a slide convert strat but ... i will try and get that decca up to speed at some point when i feel like it. i have to really be ready for something like this ( herniated disks and i have a list of projects already). ot but - i have to contact my luthier as he has an epi lp with a cracked headstock ( i received the guitar in this condition as a gift) and when i finally get that back as it has been 3 years now ... i plan to have him try and get my cort 45 to intonate , what ever that takes . its a shame i live in chicago or i would be bringing guitars to you , which brings me to point, continue this work , learn and get GREAT as you already are REALLY good at this shit , there is no limit to what you can accomplish and i am very proud to consider you a friend , some one i have learned so much from .very proud . this channel is what youtube is all about . thanks to HMatc / heather for making all this great content for us .i watched about 15 youtube videos today and this one was by far the most fun for me .

    Thank you SO much Petey! One day that test guitar will be more holes than wood hahaha! I thought I had some stamped gold foil from a box of chocolates on the fridge but I couldnt find it? So I asked Heather a while back if she had any gold foil in her nail/craft stuff? She said, "yes I have plenty". Turns out it was actual 24k gold metal leaf for guilding things... So she was bummed and I was stuck, till looking through her packing and mailing supplies and I found 2 of those gold foil bags right on the top. That was just pure dumb luck at its finest, and yeah at least I'm not the only hoarder in the house LOL. Dude I had no idea those 2 winds had wrapped the corner until after I had recorded the BG music with the test guitar. I was watching the footage and went WTF? then I saw that after a few spins the wires were gone??? Kinda glad I didn't notice while winding because I would have un-wound the whole coil. Tell Gomti Hello and that we wish both you of you the best of luck in all endeavors. I'm kind of taken aback by your love of the sound of this rig. Thank you brother. Its pretty much pure accident. Grabbed some stuff at random and plugged it together? Did pick up that KB amp at the thrift store after talking with you about using multi-effects with full range PA vs guitar amps. Also never been a big fan of "tube screamers" but when using it as a boost to push that pre-amp or the champ like you mentioned in the mid-boost video, It works out pretty good. I'm so glad you turned me on to that pre-amp that thing is a great tool. Thanks again for all the kind words Petey. I am so glad you liked the video truly. You got a screaming deal on that Decca man. The value of such guitars and especially those original foil pickups. Just that pickup is easily worth more than 10-15 times what you payed for the guitar or more in today's market. That is actually crazy huh? Just check out the vintage gold foils on Reverb its ridiculous. Damn man that guy has taken his time on that LP huh? It should look like it never happened when you get it back. I do wish we did live closer so I could do some work for you but at the same time I do admit I am quite the anti-social creature in my everyday life. I'm sure I would do it but it may be hard to get me initiated into the process... example Max is wanting me to wind some old dead vintage pickups for him right now and I would love to do it. BUT... and I know you will understand this. working for other people especially friends can be a very anxiety inducing endeavor. I would just hate for something to go wrong or for him to not be happy with the result. I been in that boat before. Which is why I was so quick to say dont worry if something goes wrong and no pressure when you were building that pedal for me. One can go crazy with such things. Thanks one last time Petey, I am very happy that you enjoyed the video. I gotta go now as heather is sitting at the table with dinner staring me down... I know what that means LOL peace bro.

    The low output is probably what's mucking with the fuzz in this particular case. Low enough signal that it only just hits the tips of clipping. I usually think of the air coil with magnets on the side design when I think goldfoil, but with the myriad of different constructions they get lost in the mix and turn into just "goldfoil" (just like "it's a Teisco" lol.) This design in particular shares blood with the Dano Lipstick Pickups, sans the metal enclosure. Has a bit of the same chime. The low end plunkiness is different tho. What you created here is fantastic.

    Thank you Alaric. I do hope I have been pronouncing your name with somewhat correct phonetics? I think you may be correct it is a much lower output than the hot coils I usually use with that fuzz. Yes, so many different designs are "goldfoil" pickups it seems some companies just sell P90s or other designs with a low wind count and and hot bar magnets, with a gold foil cover and... that is "gold foil" I tried to stay pretty true to the design of the old 1965 DeArmond made harmony pickup: sans reverse polarity starting coil on the base plate corner and metal cover. That cover is way more cutting, welding, sanding than I care to do in a video. As I have no way to stamp and using a store bought cover would just be... nah, not for this channel. Anyway I thought about it but its above my pay grade. It does have a very similar magnet coil config to the dano pickups and 1 guy on a FB group said it sounded quite like a lipstick to him. I havent played a solvertone or dano in so long I don't really remember too much about what the tone was exactly and back then I was all about mega distortion anyway. I didn't much understand subtleties of tone or why anyone would want such "Sears" guitars? Wish I would have bought some from Max back then instead of building parts casters it would have been a better investment but anyway I just love building modding and collecting... The selling not so much. I have regretted every sale I ever made. I really wish I had my Univox gimme LP back... Cant afford one now. Well that's enough rambling on with much a due about nothing. Thanks again for watching and being so kind as well as generous with your knowledge and info, I really appreciate it.

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks again Maurice, I dont think I did insulate the magnet... It wouldnt be a bad idea to do so though... for the long term of the pickup it could prevent shorting. this is also the reason for insulating the rear plate as it gets older and starts to corrode and the wires start to corrode from moisture and sweat the more insulation the better. tape mask on both could only help.

    Thank you so much Bharat but no noise gate. There was the slightest amount of hum I could hear right next to the speaker but it wasn't very bad. One thing that really helps is to hook the ground to the end of the coil that is on the outside of the windings so that the pickup will shield its self. This is the exact opposite of how the old steel plate gold foils were originally done. Also the test guitar doesn't have any extra wires or electronics inside to act as an antenna so that helps.

    @@heavymetalATC I did some researching, and the common way is to make a crystal from two household ingredients. So a piezo pickup uses a designed crystal with + and - attached to it, and then to a male jack. When the crystal is struck by the string vibration, it generates electricity that is sent out to the amp. It's pretty cool. Quartz crystal is the most popular example. Rochelle Salt is the most thought of example and used in industry, etc. Just like Star Trek, the Crystals have power and energy!!

Yes from my understanding the Hershey Bar pickup is quite similar to this pickup in construction, it is even more similar to the DeArmond "mustache goldfoil" it is a wound bundle of wires with a rubberized magnet like a refrigerator magnet. The internal difference between the two being that the early hershey's were very underwound maybe only 3.5K as where Ive read the later ones were a simmering hot 10.5-11k. In general any info you can find on the mustache gold foil will apply 1 for 1 its just that the hershey had no holes in the front cover otherwise virtually Identical.

    Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment jlr. I dont remember it being very noisy? its been a while but the low wind count would cause me to expect a quieter pickup. If you had one that was noisy and buzzy you could ground a conductive foil across the front to make an rf filter to shield it and make a super quiet pickup. metal screen like a window screen would work good or as simple as aluminum foil and glue something pretty on top.

    Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment Terence. I think it depends on the output of the pickup and the amp... If you got an amp with really good breakup when it gets hit hard or if you are running into a fuzz that cleans up at low volume like a fuzzface, I would say definitely but I have heard that the strange character that you get with some goldfoils where they seem to distort much earlier and at lower volumes is due to the use of rubber magnets in some of them... Its that kind of magnet like a removable car decal or a lot of refrigerator magnets. Hey its been 6 months if you got a some gold foils let me know what you thought about them.

    you are winding better pick ups than the other pick up channel and he has a didigetal mojo wombat powered store bought machine. that was a good sound out of that pickup. I just finished cleaning up my 20 dollar pawn shop brand guitar, the next week will be dedicated to working out what kind of pickup i want to wind out of my pinball relays. i can't get the neck flat so it will be a slide/lap steel guitar. i put 16-64 strings on it and it still has a back bow. any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you for watching and taking the time to write this kind, awesome and detailed comment woodpecker AF. OK so about that neck do understand I do things in a kind of hack way but I can usually get a good result... what I would do is loosen the truss rod all the way as I assume it is a 1 way rod and take 2 strong saw horses, or VERY sturdy wood or metal chairs. Take a 4x4 timber or 2 2x4s nailed/screwed together and put it under the bottom against the seats of the chairs or against the bottom supports and place the ends of the neck on the top of the chair backs or the tops of the saw horses and use a towel or pillow to keep them from scratching it and use a ratchet strap going from the middle of the neck to the 4x4 and slowly over a few days or a week, tighten the ratchet strap a few clicks at a time and pull that neck back out flat Id go a bit over so you can adjust with the rod after and to set it where you want it put a big pot of hot boiling water under it a few times so the steam comes up and sets the wood into that position Then let it dry and cool for a good while before you release it... May need to repeat the process if it doesn't go all the way but this will work. I hope that is easy enough to understand. Now... thats what "I" would do but If you try this use caution and go slow with the tightening and if you see or hear anything bad back off. Thanks again I hope this helps and if you try this let me know how it goes or is going and if you have further questions feel free to comment.

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    Thanks again for the comments bro. Well you could stack them if building from scratch or you could take the existing design and add a magnet to the back. This can be done on basically any pickup. just slap another magnet on the back and it will change it. When they opened up the dragon telecaster used on the Zeplin records it had a few chunky ceramic refrigerator magnets stuck to the back of the alnico bridge pickup... most people think thats a Humbucker they are hearing but its just all that magnet.

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such an awesome and kind comment David. When I first started winding I thought about taking an even older sewing machine apart and building a winder from it, I will do that eventually but I looked at the white one and thought hell I'll just put the pickup on that advance knob and wind away. It has wound quite a few great pickups for me, only maintenance has been some oil from time to time on the big coils as it gets a little hot. Ive also used a drill to good effect and a record player will work as well (that's what Seymour Duncan started on) I think even a small fan could be used with a bit of mods and trial and error tuning. Thanks again I am glad you like the unorthodox style, I love it whenever someone "gets it" that just makes my day bro.

    You are somethin' else. The sewing machine cracks me up. Cutting the bull. How about a DIY hum canceler? I have looked at several videos and they are mostly bs, or trying to sell their own product. One guy took an xlr cable and just cut the ground connection in the cable......that sounds dangerous. What do you think? Both a hum canceler to plug an amp or effects unit into, as well as a guitar hum canceler, something that would help guitarists to minimize hum. I've watched several, and they all say paint the cavities or line them, check the ground wire connections. I was wondering if a "ferrite choke" device would work clamped around a guitar chord in between the guitar and the amp.

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is something Ill have to look into I haven't ever tried or researched this subject before but as they say, shielding IS the best thing, when I built my champ clone I did hand wiring and made sure to twist every wire with a ground and even put the caps in with the outer winds on negative side by checking them on the input of another amp to see which way picked up more hum, I also ran a 3rd prong ground to the chassis and put the neutral ground on a thick copper rod as a bus for connections... no company can afford to take the time to do that. Basically anything that is grounded will block hum in a pedal an amp a guitar etc. but that champ has NO hum if its just sitting there without a guitar cord plugged in it, you have to dime it and listen for hiss just to know its on. If you played guitar in a grounded chicken wire cage you and kept as much of the power wires outside as you could would have virtually zero hum, If everything was grounded properly, its the ground that is the biggest factor. Amps dont have to hum at all but its just too damn hard and expensive to make ones that dont so its become (normal) and acceptable. The ferrite choke is a great idea to try though, I will put that in my notes and if/when I try it Ill give you a shoutout. I also think it might work great on the power wire and definitely the wall-wart ac/dc adapter wires for pedals I have a pedal plug with a big ferrite bead on 3 coils of it.

    @@heavymetalATC people are starting to sell "dummy pickups' to cancel hum. I read and saw a video explaining that the humbucker came about because they were trying to develop a p90 that didn't have hum, so they thought of a dummy pickup side by side, and it morphed into the PAF and now the current humbuckers. People are selling dummy pickups for about $40, and they put them in the cavity near the potentiometers(that's me talking like I know what I'm saying). Great videos and info. I know nothing about electronics, so this is the best way for me to learn.
