As you're talking about Mario's drum technique and his crazy double kick, you should watch their song "Where dragons dwell" live at Hellfest 2013. Spoiler: the (long) ending contains 4 minutes of non stop double bass pedal. No need to say it's pretty impressive.

My favorite song from Gojira is Vacuity. It probably could be a single since it flows really well from start to finish. Best song on its album IMO too.

Vacuity has a fantastic dynamics between those "square", heavy verses (thanks to cymbals, guitars and bass muting quickly after each note) with Joe's very harsh, layered vocals and chorus with great, loud bassline and much more melody. Incredible song, somewhat underappreciated one from their amazing discography imo

No No , Mario Duplantier is just that good , regarded as one of the best modern metal drummer , no cheating , he practice double kick for one hour straight "as a warm up " every day " he only uses triggers on tour on some specific songs to help him to not be too tired when you have a concert every two days ( he is 41 one now ) , they come from death metal , so yeah ver technical stuff on their albums even though now they're more chill .But if you listen to their past albums you'll see , check out the combo "Oroborus /theheaviest matter of the universe live garorock 2009 , live it's where they reallY shine.#BESTLIVEMETALBANDEVER Gojira is a rabbit hole man , they don't have any bad songs

He uses triggers on his kicks for the whole set. All they do is add an artificial kick SOUND along with the sound of the drum. It doesn't help any technical aspect of his drumming.

@@paulatreides1354 I think Steve's point is that triggers he uses dont make stuff he plays easier or less exhausting, he plays every single note you can hear himself, theres no doubling or any other shortcuts. Triggers just make his kickdrum sound bigger and more punchy, but theres also sound coming from microphones so despite using triggers it still sounds natural and dynamic. And I think that Mario didnt say he uses triggers for specific songs, but for specific venues (makes sense since he uses triggers only for better sound, not to help with complexity of the songs)

@@jez_77 Exaclty, Triggers are used for giving the kick a little more "clarity" at fast speeds, thats why Mario uses them. If not, it would be a ball of dull sound and you wouldn't be able to tell every note. Saw them live last year and his foot work is just next level!

Second comment, on the drumming, it's not just the speed at which his feet are moving but pay attention to what's happening up top with the drums as well, because it is nothing less than amazing he is able to keep his feet and hands working at such a pace for so long.

To my fellow Gojira fans: Do you like Thrash metal? There's an amazing French Progressive Thrash Metal band called Arcania, I describe them as "If Gojira made Thrash Metal". Arcania has 2 albums called "Dreams Are Dead" and "Sweet Angel Dust", both albums are bangers from start to finish. I highly recommend checking them out if that sounds appealing to you, enjoy my friends! 🤘🤘🤙🤙

8:52 just letting you know what your thinking about is triggers and yes all metal drummers use them yes all and no it does not do what you’ve heard people say it does and also your mixing it up so Lorna Shores drummer does heel toe double bass that’s why he can go so stupid fast so his foot hits once than the rebound brings it back up to his foot than he slams his heel down and the beater hits the drum again for one leg motion equals two hits it’s all technique that is not that the triggers do triggers based on how the drummer sets it up you can set the sensitivity and mix drum sample sounds in to make your bass drum more hearable and sound better Mario uses hybrid triggering so half of what your hearing is his acoustic bass drum and the other half is a computer sample that makes it sound good and btw Mario does not do heel toe double bass like the Lorna shore drummer Mario does straight ankle motion single strokes which is all the more impressive look up vids on single stroke vs double stroke double bass and also just want to put this in here triggers is not anyway cheating all it does is change the sound of your bass drum and some drummers can ramp up the sensitivity where they don’t have to hit the bass drum so hard to make it make a full hit sound but that’s not what Mario does Mario is pure organic while using triggers

Just don't know where this misconception comes from but so called 'triggers' do NEVER add any hits. The only purpose is to get a constant pronounced sound even with lighter strokes. Austin from Lorna Shore, for example, just looks like he'd do only half of the audible bass drum strokes cus he uses double strokes like RRLLRRLL and so on, plus he does both strokes per foot with a kinda downwards movement ('heel-toe-tecnique') - so all this together at really high tempos almost looks like he'd just do single strokes/half of the bass drum u actually hear. Mario uses triggers live to keep the bass drum sound tight. Triggers are just sensors that get 'triggered' by every single hit and with each hit a recorded sample (of only one stroke) will be played. NOTHING else! U can basically use any sample but in this case we talk 'bout bass drum samples, obviously... Greets from a drummer 🤟

You are the only art of dying reactor I've seen mention the opening verse being slightly out of step with the beat, and I think this it is one of the most underrated parts of the song, it is 110% intentional, and it ads so much to how those opening lines, the first four lines in particular in combination with the rest of the instrumentation create a dissonance, and the actual lyrics make total sense to be dissonance because it's like he's out of synch with the world around him, and so he's out of synch with the music
