In this Godzilla x Kong review or Godzilla x Kong analysis, we discuss why the new Monsterverse entry is an absolute blast! Godzilla x Kong is actually great!
While Godzilla Minus One made waves in how it took the series back to its roots, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film in North America and nabbing a Best VFX Oscar to boot, the recent success and outpour of love for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire shows that combination of Minus One, Monarch, and the increasing popularity of the Monsterverse means that Godzilla has finally been embraced in its totality in the West. What was once misunderstood Kaiju film series primarily targeted towards younger audiences, has finally clicked with mainstream audiences in a way past Godzilla films haven't.
Godzilla x Kong proves this by being a psychedelic throwback to the absurdity of the Showa Era. Director Adam Wingard channels his childhood influences to create a film that feels nostalgic, but doesn't harp on nostalgia instead using that feeling as a means to create new fans by doing something most legacy franchises seldom do: appeal to kids. GxK feels like an exception in the modern blockbuster landscape, the rare franchise film that doesn’t seem to be prioritizing its adult fans. Instead, it feels like a movie made for kids, and I mean that as a MASSIVE compliment. This is the kind of Godzilla movie I dreamed of as a 10-year-old boy, brimming with imaginative set-pieces, and vibrant sets and bizarre creations… the kind of stuff that would inspire a kid to go home and play with their toys. The film opens with a montage of Godzilla squaring off against a murders’ row of gnarly-looking creatures, and that momentum never falters. This is the kind of movie where Kong and Godzilla have a zero-gravity brawl with a sadistic red ape dictator and his mythical frost dragon at the center of the earth. Director Adam Wingard’s top priority was clearly to make sure every kid in the theater had the time of their life for 115 minutes, and at the end of the day, is there any purer distillation of Shōwa era Godzilla than that?
That's just the tip of the iceberg in this Godzilla video essay. In this Godzilla x Kong The New Empire movie review, Griffin (@griffschiller) explains why GxK proves Godzilla remains Cinema's MVP, why Godzilla nukes modern Hollywood, why Godzilla is the king of cinema, why Godzilla x Kong is perfect, why Godzilla x Kong is so good, why Godzilla is more popular than ever, and more in this Godzilla x Kong explained video. Enjoy this Godzilla x Kong ending explained Monsterverse analysis!

This is the most fun that I’ve had at the movies this year so far. Dune 2 is an overall better movie but GxK is still a blast. Granted they are two very different kinds of movies. It’s incredibly stupid but incredibly fun. I mean come on, Kong uses Suko as a baseball bat against evil apes and Godzilla suplexes Kong into a pyramid!!! What’s not to love?!

Pointless comparison, I don't know why people need to bring up different stories to passive aggressively bring another down, it's so annoying. GXK and Dune 2 are fire in their own right, hence a pointless comparison, Breaking Bad is great but so is ASOIAF to different to be compared.

I remember watching godzilla final wars when I was like 9 and thinking "imagine if they made this on a Hollywood budget, that'd be amazing", and five years later the monsterverse started. Exactly! I love that because, like you, I also prefer the 2014 Godzilla, but the more absurdist take on the character we've seen in the later Monsterverse entries is equally as enjoyable and fun, just in a different way. I think that's the beauty of Godzilla. It can be all of these things and we love it for that.

GxK has so many deep levels that people overlook by calling it dumb fun. I loved your analysis of the movie and couldn't agree more. It adds to the Showa era without ever taking from it, it feels like such a natural addition to the franchise that doesn't harp on repeating the past.

GxK is the most fun I’ve had in the theater since… well Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There’s plenty of great movie experiences, but nothing beats giant monsters duking it out on the IMAX screen with that glorious IMAX sound. MonsterVerse, Shin Godzilla, Polygon Trilogy, Singular Point, Minus One? All of them incredibly different from the other and yet all of them undeniably Godzilla. It’s shocking how versatile of a character the King of the Monsters can be. There’s never been a better time to be a Godzilla fan, and after 70 years that’s a hell to a thing to say.

Big G fans are living deliciously right now. Its nice to see a fandom be so accepting & nontoxic of what the Monsterverse has become & compared to the rest of Godzilla's history. Theres a place for dumb, but sincere, fun & this delivered it all. We just need more Godzilla next time (possibly the next being he needs Kong's help to fight the villain) I think they've FINALLY found the right amount of human story for these films; a small focused cast with a singular story.

The malleability and flexibility of Godzilla ought to collapse under itself and drag the character down with him, and yet the Big G manages to be both serious and artful and totally maximalist, bananas entertainment. Frankly, similarly iconic characters have attempted to be embody both opposite ends of the spectrum over the years to much LESS success or organic transition. Overall, great video! Especially with nailing how the film just captures that inner child's imagination and excitement. By the way, any chance you could do individual deep dives on prior Godzilla and King Kong films like Gareth Edwards' Goji or Peter Jackson's Kong?

Maaaaann this one was certified kick ass awesome! You perfectly found a way to articulate exactly what makes Godzilla and Kong so awesome and iconic. You also highlighted the importance of feeding your inner child and reminding yourself it's okay just to have a blast at the movies, which is exactly what Peak Cinema is, a film that can take your mind off of the rest of the world from 90 minutes to 2 hours all the while you shove your face with popcorn, laugh, cry and cheer the whole way through, especially about a movie about a nuclear dinosaur teaming up with a gargantuan gorilla to fight other monsters, a Film that has so much heart and soul doing its own thing while showing its love and appreciation for the films that came before it. For this, I tip my hat off to you sir. Thank you!

I saw it the other day shortly after watching GxK. It is still amazing but the protagonist is boring af and they have the audacity to cut some scenes when the monsters are going to fight in a monster movie. You're right about the serious and dark atmosphere it allows the movie to have some awesome scenes like Godzilla's reveal, but that would get old after a couple of movies imo. I enjoy the more recent Monsterverse movies more but I understand why Godzilla 2014 is your favourite.

As a godzilla fan myself i felt like king kong deserve just as much credit and recognition as G-lizard because kong has debuted in 1933 whereas godzilla debut in 1954 kong hadnt had more movies when compare to godzilla himself but i felt like the big king ape deserve just as much appreciation since kong was the first to revolutionized the monster movie medium while beast of 5000 fathom is the first proto kaiju film to be made king kong was the first to expand it further. I felt like king ape deserved to be just as much respect as G-lizard would.

The Monsterverse and Minus One just prove that Godzilla is without a doubt the most fluid character in film. One minute, he can be the lovable hero of a fun action movie and the next a nightmarish metaphor in an anti-war masterpiece and neither seem even slightly out of place. For the life of me, I can't recall any other single character that can do that

There’s also the theme of Isolation Kong feels lonely because he can’t find any members of his own race, Godzilla feels isolated because outside of Mothra none of the other Titans have his back they obey him out of self preservation and he seems so tired and done with it all, like someone who works a thankless 9-5 to the point he develops a bit of a ruthless streak until Mothra resurrected to calm him down, and of course the mute girl who feels like she doesn’t fit in with her classmates who’s only remaining connection to her people was Kong.

Awesome essay leading into GXK my friend! I freaking loved this movie and that is probably because of the inner child in me who grew up off the Showa era movies. If you ask me it couldn't be a better time to be a Godzilla and Kong fan alike and who would of thought between Minus One and now GXK Godzilla would be ruling supreme in cinema?! One must admit that much has to be owed to Godzilla (2014) for reviving our beloved big G and Kong!

Hey man, your video deserve a good respect. And yes, The Monsterverse will continue as one of the best franchise in cinema. You gonna give credit to Dr Serizawa as well. He is the character who truly understands the coexistence both man and monsters in KOTM. to top it all, he is willing to sacrifice for Godzilla to fight against Ghidorah leading a unity both humanity and Godzilla in Boston. Another video made by Dangerville suspected GxK has stories both humans and monsters. A story where the Great Apes enslave by a tyrant Skar King, a bond between Kong & Suko and Dr Andrew’s with Jia and expandable lores and stories for the upcoming movie. What makes this movie special for me is that Kong and Skar King no need dialogue or lines. Just body language, facial expression and their action can easily understand their characters. This is why the Lion King remake failed and the Monsterverse success with their characters. W video.

I went to the cinema to watch this with the Mrs, who begrudgingly watched two previous movies (after much convincing), Godzilla (2014) and King of The Monsters with me. She enjoyed them, but nowhere near the way i loved them, I've loved Godzilla since first discovering it as a kid on TV over 20 years ago. Anyway, after some convincing she agreed to come watch this in the cinema and she loved it! Purely based on how nuts and fun it was, to the point now where she wants to see Godzilla Minus One, after not even being slightly interested beforehand. Goes to show how successful Gman is becoming and its good to see it shit on so any of the big movies around nowadays.

YES YES EXACTLY, I'm tired of people making stupid comparisons with this film and Godzilla Minus One, they go into depth at how brilliant Minus One is and then just boil this film to just a stupid child fantasy when there's a lot more to this film even when the action is the main appeal. I legit saw someone comment about how the Monsterverse films are about Mankind's relationship with Nature and then saw someone else replying saying that's a trash take that makes no sense, like WHAT?

I can't prove it but I have a theory that Godzilla powering up to purple-pink in GxK was in part to help differentiate that Godzilla from the Godzilla in Godzilla Minus One. Shin Godzilla had purplish-pink atomic breath, so it's not totally unfounded. But it does make Godzilla in the monsterverse clearly differentiated from Godzilla in Godzilla Minus One to less aware audiences.

Its hard to believe but Godzilla 70 the year of New Empire and is still the long running film franchise with the most movie entries. And across that 70 years their has been a lot variation of the big guy, and yes those miserable people still come out the basement to complain that anything other then the strict vaguely defined "right" way for Godzilla is the only one, and most people are not gonna be exposed to just one version but the many different versions. It kind of established at this point that the big guy doesn't have a strict interpretation.

This feels a bit weird of a argument. Since Goji’s cinematic performance has been greatly inconsistent throughout the years Especially when something like Kong, Godzilla’s rival in nearly everything, continues to match Godzilla’s overall box office success with less films and less failures. Alongside having far more rewards and acknowledgments as a franchise And Godzilla needed the Monsterverse to resurface far more than Kong did

  • @vvgirl6173

I really enjoyed the movie. But i really wished there was more attention and screentime for Godzilla. It felt more like a Kong movie. We watched snip bits of Godzilla powering up in preparation. But in the end it wasn't him who dealt the final blow. And even during the final fight he didn't get much screentime or attention. I get that Kong is more human so the audience can relate to him more. But where is the Godzilla from 2014 or King of Monsters that showed emotion in his expression when interacting with humans. I hope the next movie focuses more on Godzilla. Because it feels like he's being left behind, especially since in both GvK and GxK it was Kong who had the final hit. Godzilla has proven to be able to defeat Kong. So why the heck is Kong finishing off Godzilla's enemies for him???
