Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire joins the giant monsters on the same team to fight against alternate versions of themselves. And although the fight and the movie itself may look cool, it's feels pretty plastic. It doesn't make you think or feel or anything. Just like movies like Red Notice and the new Ghostbusters. The era of consumerism has decreased the wonderment value of even giant monsters like Kong and Godzilla. So today, let's try to see why that is and how it can be improved.

Most of those people are hardcore fanboys that think the movie is perfection... which it isn't and this is coming from someone who loves the movie. Then the rest of them are just people who enjoyed the film, flaws and all but just don't agree with Filmento's view on some of those flaws... like me. I can still respect his view on the film, even if I don't agree with it 100%.

Everyone trying to push the "this is just like showa" and "Godzilla's always been silly" shit simultaneously ignore the fact that this is a specific series of Godzilla movies that was absolutely much more grounded than this. Even Showa itself often had messaging woven into its films, something completely absent with MV, and their visuals were lacking from a lack of money and 50s-70s technology. There is no excuse for the downgrade in visuals today with +100 million budgets. Comparing the two is a disservice to the actual showa era films.

If that's not a big consequence, I don't know what it is.

Probably not because other than vfx technology which will be outdated by then, the story and characters are not noteworthy enough. And people often forget just because something is objectively bad, doesn't mean you can't subjectively enjoy, or feel shame about enjoy something. No, they need to get defensive and claim it's the best thing ever and everyone who doesn't like it are just idiots or haters who don't get it. One thing I never felt shame for is I genuinely find Batman & Robin to be the most enjoyable batman movie. Especially in the current era where all the whinny bat fanatics keep insisting batsy has to be angry and gritty and dark all the time because that makes them feel smarter about enjoying batsy when the story is about a millionaire dressed up as a flying rat punching thugs to get his boner.

An argument I heard a lot in defense of this movie, and in comparison to Godzilla: Minus One, was: "They are just different. One is the original serious allegory about real world disasters and trauma, and the other the silly cartoony fights amongst giant monsters of the 70's. But they are both Godzilla." But like you said, and as recent films like Furiosa prove, there is no reason you can't do both at the same time. You can have people fight in chace sequences with silly non-nonsensical cars, and a deep characters that constantly struggle with trauma and loss, at the same time.

Well, you inadvertently hit the nail on the head. It's not that companies are accidentally not hiring qualified actual story-tellers, filmmakers, actors, and writers...they're going out of their way not to hire them. This is why you have huge multi-million dollar franchises being handed to 20-something activists with not actual bonafides or experience in the field of successful film-making. The companies are now more interested in securing investors (while losing hundreds of millions of dollars...) instead of producing quality films.

@Inkdisc Millenium Godzilla had two movies where his spines were a dark purple. GMK absolutely did NOT have pink spines lol. If anything his design was a return to form outside of the head shape and the demonic empty eyes. His color palate was much more in line with classic designs (charcoal black and bone white). GMK also never treated its premise like it was silly. It takes itself pretty damn seriously all things considered. Hell, I’d even go as far as to say that the premise in and of itself is not silly at all. Vengeful souls merging and empowering a vicious beast to wreak havoc on a country who’s forgotten its history, but is simultaneously protected by ancient guardians of the planet. The way the premise is handled feels far less ridiculous because it’s treated with sincerity. I wouldn’t say GxK takes itself all that seriously at all.

I think the real problem is one of black and white thinking. If they like the movie then it must be objectively good. It's hard to accept that the things they like might have flaws, that it needs to be either all good or all bad. There are many kinds of movies made for many different audiences, it's important to properly categorize criticisms. This was an exciting and cool movie, and if you WANT to turn your brain off and watch action figures come to life in the most epic fight scenes put the film then this is perfect. If you want a compelling plot with interesting characters then this movie is utter crap. You need to decide whether you're a screw or a nail, then either pick the movie that's a hammer or a screwdriver. Saying a hammer sucks because it's useless as a screwdriver is ridiculous. This video is great at showing us why this movie isn't a "movie" and I agree on all points. People on all sides need to realize that it's okay to like "bad" movies and it doesn't mean you're wrong for liking it. It also doesn't mean we're wrong for expecting more, for not liking it.

King Ghidorah became Mecha-King-Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla became Super Mechagodzilla, Rodan became Fire Rodan, Godzilla became Burning Godzilla, Moguera, Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah all had alternate forms they could transform into. Godzilla X Kong is more in line with the 90s Heisei films than it is with the 70s Showa films.

I still do and would enjoy watching it again but I very much agree with everything you said here. While watching the movie I just don't recognize the things you mentioned but looking back, I even agree that the monsters seem smaller due to there being less scenes of civilians looking at the battle to show their scale. The only thing I'm conflicted about is caring vs understanding the mom daughter relationship. I feel like I cared a lot about their relationship as well as understood it BUT that's possibly because I've seen their relationship over the course of a few movies. Contained in this movie itself, I can definitely see not having enough reasons to care about their relationship on an emotional level. I feel that's a common flaw of movies within a series. Good critique. I'm a massive Godzilla fan, yet I felt nothing with this film. The spectacle and scale kaiju bring to the screen just wasn't there. Fans keep bringing up how you can't criticize it for being dumb fun when that's supposedly what the Showa movies were, except, they were much more than that. Most Showa movies had something meaningful to say, even when targeted to kids, which is important because they elevate the presence of kaiju, their destruction, their battles, and their impact. Just because GxK has more monster screentime doesn't mean it's better when it's at the cost of the rest of the movie's qualities. People don't realize that those extra things (yes, even the humans) are important to making monsters, well, monsters. Compared to the previous Monsterverse films, including GvK, this was a let down. Not to say this movie doesn't have its merits and that you can't have a blast with it. I just want to emphasize that Godzilla is not Transformers, or Fast and the Furious, or Marvel, or Rampage, or Pacific Rim Uprising. Even it at his cheesiest, there is a clear difference in what he brings to both sides of the spectrum, and it is not unreasonable to expect more substance from a hundred-plus million dollar movie, especially with a character as influential as Godzilla. Of course, we might not have had Suko nunchucks if that was the case so take my word for what you will.

Same, these movies are becoming cartoons and for kids only, I enjoyed only some parts of this movie but like most Transformers movies, just pointless action that looks great but has no depth, no urgency, no anything. It felt like watching a poor version of the reboot Planet of the Apes movies. I have no idea why people hate KOTM, it literally has the best monsterfights, scenes but also the atmosphere of the first movie. This on the other hand was just whatever.

Honestly, I would compare this movie more to the King Kong Television shows or King Kong escapes from 1967. Those shows were 1. far more divergent from King Kong's original mythos, and 2. nowhere near as well written as something like Kong Skull Island or King Kong 2005. They were more focused on entertainment and enjoyment. And frankly, I love it. Yeah sure, it's lost a lot of what the Monsterverse had before, and that is a gripe that I do have with the movie, but taking for what it is, it works. Plus, there are genuine qualities that I think you should have mentioned. First off, I do think you were a little harsh on the human cast, especially the titan vet, Trapper. While they're not standouts like KOTM or Minus One, the movie still gave at least some effort to distinguish them and try to tie back to the monsters, namely Illene and Jia's struggle mirroring Kong and Suko's struggle. As well as that, the movie's willingness to tell a majority of its story through the kaiju's body movements, facial expressions, and whatever is onscreen is definitely something to commend, with the standout scene being Skar King's introduction. In less than 20 minutes, we learn everything we need to know about who he is, what he's gonna be like, and why we should dislike him, and it is really well done. That said, I do agree that we should take it more seriously for the next one.

He mostly being a giant spiky glowing lizard who like to wreck everything. He barely showing emotions and mostly looking grumpy, frowning, mad, or just totally pissed off because he represent trauma and anger of the victim of World War II. I wouldn't say this movie is emotionally void. Kong also doesn't just feel like an action figure either. He grows an emotional bond with Suko and has a compelling journey to try and free his people. Also, the reason why there’s a lack of grounded perspective in most of the monster scenes, is because said scenes are meant to be from the monsters’ point of view, not the humans. Although, I still agree with some of your other criticisms. Also, I like how you referenced Godzilla Minus One at 8:48. Speaking of which, will you ever cover that movie? I find it interesting we went from a movie that treated godzilla as an apocalyptic force of nature, in a real-world setting where soldiers had to HALO jump and manually set a mechanical trigger on a nuke, to the latest film, that treats them as saturday morning cartoons and pets, where we have telepathy and magical flying ships. As Filmento says, its popular and people like it, but its worth pointing out that huge shift from realism to future magic in the span of what, two films?

  • @TWDub

    @TWDub

How did the world adapt to them, exactly? We have the world governments vying for chances to profit off of them or destroy them as they do with everything. And we have a few scientist groups like MONARCH who want to study them. But that's about all we're shown. There isn't actually any worldbuilding. We don't see how humanity has adapted to the monsters. We don't see how or even IF they've developed ways to insure themselves against the destruction that will inevitably happen when a monster shows up. We don't see any preventative measures which have been developed to minimize the loss of human life before the monsters arrive. There's literally nothing. Take it from a writer. There's no worldbuilding in the Monsterverse worth a damn right now. There's a lot of concepts and ideas which are surface level such as the Hollow Earth, but nothing of substance to give any actual life or vibrance to those ideas. For example, what's special about the Hollow Earth? New ecosystems, weird gravity and new species. Okay, but I ask again what makes them special? Nothing. There's new ecosystems, weird gravity, and new species to see. But there's nothing special about them. They're just there. There's no lore we see or get to experience to help us understand how or why this place, the gravity, or the ecosystems and creatures in it exist. There's no signs or clues as to how they evolved over time, how they survive, etc. The Monsterverse is a whole lot of surface level concepts with potential, but nothing to back it up. It was literally a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks," and now we have what we have. If they actually tried to delve into the concepts they created and give genuine substance to them we'd have a film series with each entry getting close to or surpassing $1 billion per film.

i love how you´re explaining the movie from the perspective of somone who´s not a hard core fan of the franchise but as someone who just watches movies cause they exist, really opens up the view of the movie from your videos, i as a fan understand why things are the way they are in the movie but someone who isn´t doesn´t know that this movie is technically a representation of the old godzilla movies from the 60s where they were all goofy and funky, the reason why the monsters feel smaller is because they move faster and that´s also because the director said that the story is told from the perspective of the monsters and not humans, which is something someone who is a fan knows but someone who isn´t doesn´t, which is why your arguments are valid, cause this is looked at from a very different perspective and it doesn´t look like it´s just a pile of garbage, your videos show that you did your research right but not in a way that justifies the movie as it is but as something that talks about something that a LOT of other movies do nowadays, the new godzilla is packed with refferences which only the fans know so those that didn´t like the movie have valid points if they can explain why the movie was bad, i see its bad parts and i agree with them, the reason why i love the movie is cause big monsters big fights, that´s my kind of a movie, that doesn´t mean it has to be something EVERYONE should like, if u don´t like it, that´s fine too also, was hoping u would make a kratos refference for Kong and Suko(small kong) cause that´s something people on the internet were doing

I think it's worth recognising that there ARE things you can take away from Godzilla X Kong, and that just because it has over the top action and silly set pieces, doesn't mean there isn't emptyness at its core. There are themes of cultural identity and oppression shoved into your face extremely clearly, and even references to the Book of Exodus and Shakespeare. It has heart, and messages that people can take away and think about. It just so happens there's also a scene of Godzilla jumping around in zero gravity. It harks back to the classic Showa era films, which also have subtext that are relevant for their time, but also have silly action scenes, letting audiences of all ages connect to it in several ways. Because of Gojira's history, I wouldn't be so set in dismissing GxK as some example of the dumbing down of modern Hollywood blockbusters, since this is still a very authentic portrayal of the series. I respectfully disagree with your view, even though I'd like for them to put a bit more depth in the next entry.

Themes are not powerful if they don't have substance. Aside from Jia's dynamic as essentially an alien, everything else feels shallow. And ultimately, GXK feels less authentic than most Showa era films. KOTM had themes, but they were powerful and relevant to the story at hand. G14 and KSI had those too. Heck, GVK had them!!! But GXK felt shallow in comparison. Not to mention, the Showa era films were a product of the time and some of them can't work and won't work at all. Sometimes, it's better to let the past be the past and just work on the current environment. I left a similar comment in regards to his Rise of the Beasts video, and how the power dynamic was showcased in Bumblebee. But here's how he responded, and it can apply here as well: " I made that video about Rise of the Beasts, not about Bumblebee. Still, thanks very much for watching, I appreciate it!" And ultimately, that's the best way to put it. You can't back on previous installments because you yourself can't stand on your own. And ultimately, that's all the defense I saw with GXK; it just harkens back to previous films. And lastly, just because it harkens back to previous films, it doesn't mean it should necessarily copy those. I assume you were aware of the time when Madame Web was criticized for being "early 2000s superhero movie." Just replace Madame Web with GXK and "Early 2000s superhero movie" with "early 1970s kaiju movie." Yeah it doesn't seem so funny now...

I agree with those points, but my opinion on this movie (and by extension the monsterverse and pretty much all Godzilla movies) is the same as most other people. These franchises don't need to be the best we've ever seen, and they've never been the best, they aren't Marvel. What the monsterverse is, is a collection of somewhat loosely connected movies (of various quality) made by people who genuinely enjoy Godzilla. Their quality might not be the best, and don't get me wrong I most enjoy minus one Godzilla, but Godzilla has a lot of variety. The only monsterverse movie that had a returning director was GxK, and with Adam Wingard working on another movie, this leaves space for others to make their own Godzilla movie. I believe this to be the monsterverses biggest strength, directors who enjoy these types of movies can make their mark by creating a different Godzilla movie from the rest. For anyone and everyone to enjoy. Some Godzilla movies like minus one can have really good human characters, others are just really good action movies like GvK and GxK and king of the monsters just being a good balance of both, and Godzilla 2014 being a good thriller movie and holding a special place in my heart. I'd like the monsterverse to continue this trend, I enjoy the variety. Basically, most of these movies are not perfect, but they do bring some really good variety. GxK is probably my least favourite monsterverse movie I've watched so far, but I still had a blast. Can't wait to see what's next. That's mostly wraps up my opinion, sorry if it's bad lol, I'm no writer.

The good guy (kong),just like superman, chooses to believe in the good within everyone, until proved different. 4. God forbid the social-ape who has a connection with humans, and believes to be the last of its kind, looks for help with said humans. All other points are fair to a degree, but going on about other characters in the franchise when they were just as hollow is absurd to me. On the same point of the franchise, let's not pretend like Godzilla is a serious franchise. If 5 out of 30 movies are serious, it is not a serious franchise, yk.

I think the general opinion towards this movie is that 'it was fun' and sometimes people just want that, most of the people who went to watch gxk knew what they are going in for, I didn't expect any kind of story telling or good written characters, I was just there to see pink godzilla and kong jumping some monke. But yeah I can see your arguments.

Plus Godzilla has a very special place in my heart. While I've turned extremely sour on marvel movies when I wasn't even that interested in the first place. Mainly due to the over saturation of marvel. Edit: I am biased and I don't think anything will change my opinion on this unless somehow someway marvel creates literal cinematic gold I will always prefer kaijus over superheros. I also just like that movie theaters are getting some variety in it's plastic movies and not the same franchises over and over again.

“It doesn’t make you think or feel” Well that’s a lie right off the bat. Also, Kong’s journey of discovering he’s not alone and discovering his people relating back to Jia and Dr. Andrews is perfectly fine. It’s not as good as King of the Montsers, but I would argue the human side is 1000% better than in Godzilla vs Kong. Trapper was a great character as well, he was charming and funny, and the rest of the cast was perfectly fine because the other characters don’t really matter. The characters are meant to be the monsters. This is what the fans wanted. Several of your “and thens” also had things that did happen from cause and effect. The signals are what caused the ship to temporarily black out. Some of your points are fine but some of them are just… not on par with your other videos. I love watching your videos, but this one was just not it. This movie did EXACTLY what the fans wanted, we didn’t want super deep human drama, we wanted bit monsters hitting other monsters in a cool way. We wanted the big action. That’s what we came for. But I disagree this is nonsense, a lot of the stuff you pointed out toward the end had very logical explanations. The crystal was part of Shimo’s body, so Skar King was overcharging her energy with it causing her immense pain, and the apes digging was then mining for resources and looking for a way to get back to the surface, which is explained. You can use your brain in this movie, it isn’t ALL noise, but once again, the fans wanted less humans and more monsters and that’s what we got. That’s why this movie is the highest grossing of the monsterverse.

yes, I think about that every time I am watching sci-fi movies. The CGI did the job for most of the scene, nothing special or nothing to be amazed by. All stories have the same cliche endings. I started to feel this way when the MARVEL movies came out. I started to feel lazy watching movies. Movies nowadays are boring. I don't know why The Matrix and LOTR are CGI but still worth watching rather than sci-fi movies now.
