Koichi being not just a soldier, but specifically a kamikaze, I think pointed out the absurdity of those men having to sacrifice their lives for a war that ultimately destroyed that generation not only due to the lives that were lost, but the people that were affected so negatively and in so many ways. If the kamikaze did their job, they inherently had to die. And if they did not, like Koichi did not, then they were ridiculed by their countrymen causing them to die a different kind of death if you will. Thus, Koichi being a kamikaze is a metaphor for war being a lose - lose situation.

  • @actuarony

Noriko survived due to her being infected by the Godzilla regenerative cells. Hence the black ink like worm moving on her neck when the camera zoomed in. Koichi’s inner demons, the guilt that was eating him inside, unfortunately his mindset was still in his own war. That’s the reason he didn’t pursue Noriko and accepted the little girl as his daughter. He wasn’t good enough because he bailed his mission and was supposed to die in the war. His character had a full arc at the end where he completed his mission and survived to live for Noriko and the little girl.

the ending with Noriko is what takes this film from a great film to an all-timer masterpiece that most people who watch it will never forget. almost reminds me of a time before cinemasins and other kinds of nitpicker pseud content was huge, before people thought that taking films apart like a puzzle box was more valuable than actually experiencing the film, bc they were worried other people online would accuse them of turning their brain off or something equally insecure. I remember when Top Gun Maverick came out I saw people complaining that the movie would've meant more if Maverick had died, and I think people like that are simply too robotic to "get" it, and they approach films like an algebra formula, where if you add death and tragedy as an input you automatically get a better movie as an output. I'm extremely happy that this film didn't go that route, bc if it had, it would've just gone on top of an ever-increasing pile of mid tryhard flicks that are obsessed with all the wrong things. as it stands, it's the best, most affecting Godzilla film, the year's best action-blockbuster, and one of my favorite theatrical experiences of all time. Love it!

Much like how Shin Godzilla was a more horror based Godzilla this one would be a nightmare version of Godzilla never before seen. It could be a single movie or maybe a few movies where the humans not only have to deal with Godzilla but his lingering effect on the environment as well. Then it would change again to whatever the new take on the big G might be.

The only negative that i have about the movie is how they didnt do much for the young guy. Most of his scenes (save for the boat scene) are of him being a background character or having a one liner and thats it. You are wrong about Noriko and the blast. The heat ray was in the opposite direction and it struck miles away. Hence the mushroom cloud was over there far from them and Godzilla was facing it and roared with satisfaction and rage. She was just struck by the shockwave and thrown out of sight. Not vaporized. Also, looked better than before you say? She had potentially lost an eye and had an injured head and arm along with some type of radiation sickness. Apparently having been in unconscious for several days/weeks. How is that better?

something that someone pointed out in a comment section on another video was that the reason there was even an ejection seat in the plane in the first place wasnt because the mechanic dude installed it, but because it was already in it and he just noticed it. the comment said that there was a flag in the plane that made the plane seem like it was from germany, not japan, meaning the plane was recovered and rebuilt by japan and that the mechanic just noticed it and pointed it out to koichi rather than just building one into it. it would also explain why when he was first observing the cockpit, he paused and it looked like he noticed something

There is a reason why Noriko could have survived from the Godzilla's atomic beam. The hint is a black bruise on her backside neck shown in the last scene of her. That means that she have taken in remains of Godzilla's meats in her body at the mess accidentally, and the power of the cell of Godzilla made her cured or regenerated her body. That's why she have survived from the destruction like "Godzilla". I am Japanese and found the behind plot from one of the movie reviews in Japan. I am not sure what would happen to her later on with the cells of Godzilla.

I really really hope they don’t go where Shin left off with tiny godzilla-men. I like what Godzilla stands for as a massive force of nature. The accumulated vengeful souls of all those who suffered under Imperial Japan’s tyranical military during WWII reflecting back in Imperial Japan’s face.

You will enjoy more if you know Japanese secrets of Godzilla. Let me ask you following questions. Q1. Why did Godzilla come to Ginza and mysteriously disappeared from the movie? This is same as the movie Sin-Godzilla and original 1954 Godzilla. In case of Sin-Godzilla, it was Tokyo station, and original 1954 Godzilla, he came to the Japanese parliament building but gone. Why? And why the locations are so important? Q2. After Godzilla died, why the people on the ships saluted him? In the 1954 Godzilla movie, people sang the beautiful music like a funnel and in Sin-Godzilla, end of Godzilla’s tail shows human like figures. All these are related. So why? Q3. Why does Japanese Godzilla walk like a Noh-theater actors? Is it because he is some kind of divine god? To answer these questions, you need to know followings. First of all, there are still many dead Japanese soldier’s bodies not recovered from deep Pacific oceans. We could not even give them proper funnels. We know all of them wanted to come back, but they couldn’t. Godzilla is Tatari-gami(kami:god) of Odoh Island. Tatari-gami is a god of curse and give judgement. In Shinto religion, one of the most important jobs for a priest is to calm Tatari-gami down. Emperor of Japan is a living deity and highest priest of Shinto. Please take a look at map of Tokyo. You see Ginza, Tokyo station and the Japanese parliament building are all in front of imperial palace. Japanese soldiers are emperor’s soldiers and they should be back to Yasukuni-shrine to rest. By the way, Yasukuni-Shrine is locating next to imperial palace. Godzilla is Tatari-gami and spirits of dead soldiers are in Godzilla. However, Godzilla is also cursed by the atomic radiation. So, he finally came back to Japan to rest, but he is a monster now and not welcomed. Godzilla was looking for his resting place (Yasukuni-Sherine), but he cannot find it. Godzilla screamed in Ginza with sad madness. By the way, the screaming was so important, director Yamazaki rented entire baseball field to record the scream sound. It was most costed part of the 15 million dollars movie. All Japanese movie directors want to portrait Godzilla like a divine figure. That is the reason Japanese Godzilla walks like a Noh-theater actor. Entire movie is a ritual and a process to calm down the Tatari-gami (Godzilla), and give him proper funnel. Only problem is Godzilla is curse by US atomic-bomb and the radiation, so he cannot die and continue to be Tatari-gami. Noriko has affected by G-cell. As Koichi’s war ends, but Noriko’s war has just started. This reminds us the suffering of many survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki from radiation. Many of them have to live rest of their long life in pain and agony. Question is, did our war truly ended? By knowing these secrets, you will enjoy Godzilla movie more.
