Godzilla Minus One Review - Is It REALLY That Good or Overrated?

Ойын-сауық

The recently released giant monster movie, Godzilla Minus One is out in limited theaters right now. I was able to see the film in its Minus Color edition(the black and white re-release). This is a Japanese film that is said to be possibly the best Godzilla film ever made. Is it worth the hype? Let's find out!

1:58 so like the entire Showa, some of the Heisei and most of the Millennium eras? It's not just the American films, Godzilla can be more than just an evil monster, its the reason he's still around

I went into this movie with an expectation of around 6/10. (This was also my first ever fully subtitle movie.) Came out of this movie with a 11/10. (Gets a bonus point for blowing me away with its captivation) Probably tops Oppenheimer as my favourite movie of 2023.

Everything was perfect to me: Story, Characters, Godzilla (design, sound, visual effects) character arc, Set Design, Cinematography, Humor, Dialogue. Of course were used to getting trash by hollywood thats why its so appealing to Western audiences. But in its own merits its still a very good movie.

I think Odo island didn’t come off as effective in B&W. I just saw that version tonight after seeing the Color version 3x and the fire lighting is crucial in making pre atomic Zilla as scary as he was. Additionally the monochrome made that whole sequence way too dark. The first time I saw the film in Imax thst Odo sequence absolutely blew me away. I’d never seen Godzilla pick up people and hurl them into the sky.

I agree, Odo Island was the one scene in the entire movie that wasn't as good or better in Minus Color.

@@raysure1345 I'm not sure what it was, it might be because it was my second viewing. I saw it color first, and Odo Island was terrifying and tense. it felt much less so my second viewing in black and white.

Yes they did a great job making it feel like it’s from 1950s The Minus Color edition was just too good

I loved the Black and White version. It hit differently than the color. I would personally say I enjoyed it more in B/W, but both were fun movies. It was a return to classic story telling with a modern twist. PTGS (Post Traumatic Godzilla Syndrome) is a thing in this film. I liked how Godzilla got bigger as time went on as more and more atomic waste was added to the world. It was a relatable story for the humans with just enough character development to get me invested. The happy ending was perfectly in line with a 1950s film that remembered it was created to entertain people, not leave them feeling empty. One of the year's best films.

@jarrodskufcagaming5203 They are, but I found the experience to be quite different. Color plays a role in perception. It's like walking into a well lit room versus one with lots of shadow and places for unexpected things to be lurking. Perception matters.

The acting in this movie is outstanding, that you get what's going on without really reading. The only parts I paid attention to the writing on the screen was when Godzilla first appears on Onho (sp?) Island, the other time was towards the end with the planning of taking on Godzilla. Otherwise, you don't even notice the words as the acting conveys all the emotion. It's a darn good movie. I still rave about it.

My kid loves godzilla. I never got into it, even kong. Im not even sure ive sat thru an entire old school godzilla movie. We went to see g-1 at a regal 4dx motion theater. It was amazing. We havrnt rewatched the movie since then so I'm curious how bias i am from the motion seats experience. But this is how i explain it to my friends: if you take the monster out of this particular monster movie, its still a good movie.

Given the fact that the budget is $10 million its ok, but the way the characters played is below low for me, i'm not saying the other Godzilla movies are excellent but this is in no way deserves the best Godzilla movie of all times, cgi was 2006ish ...

I enjoyed both color and minus color, but minus color would’ve been cooler/different if there was a little less music. Some music is good and essential, but a little less would’ve made it feel like the 1954 Godzilla. Loved both nonetheless.

People call Minus One a masterpiece. I'm convinced these people are lying by omission. Q: What did they omit? A: The rest of their sentence. Q: Omission at the end of their sentence? A: Minus One is master POS.

Yes, it is still overrated. I give it 8/10 for War Drama... 6.5/10 for Godzilla films. but all over the internet is like 10/10. it's not.

Much better in color. Black n white is just a cash grab really. Which is fine, we want more movies. This is a great movie. But it is overrated mostly due to internet hyperbole. 8/10 as a movie. Let’s hope we get more from these same creators.

The comparison of Minus One to that of the entire MonsterVerse is not really fair. & a bit disingenuous take out the Japan soldier out of the equation. And you still some of the complaints that you made about the American Version and while I admit in some key aspects MinusOne does better but the comparison just isn’t entirely realistic there’s a reason there’s contracts for 2 different countries they get to keep it & do one offs & one where we in the US get to have our thing and before you start possibly making assumptions it gets a 96% from me but I’m just saying while $15 or so Million looks outstanding but saying that it’s better than the US Version of King of the Monsters in the action department… common now. I didn’t want to spoil your fun for it. But again let’s not entirely drink it’s KoolAid. & be realistic. I saw it in color within roughly the week if not first few days or so of its release. I’d still as I said give it a 96%.

This movie is all hype... Just another giant monster movie with a bunch of ham fisted overly drawn out elements with the soap opera styled 'story'. Took me three sittings to finally finish it. Total snooze fest. I just can't believe the kind of garbage that gets so much praise today. IQs are dropping I think.
