Godspeed You! Black Emperor- 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! ALBUM REVIEW

Музыка

Listen: theneedledrop.com/2012/10/stre...
With its first album in 10 years, Canadian post-rock giants Godspeed You! Black Emperor manage to bring the same intensity, grit, melodic sensibilities, and ambition that has made the band's previous material so great.
What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

The thematic connection is the student protest in Montreal in 2012. At the beginning of Mladic you are in a police helicopter cockpit. At the end of Mladic you are in the streets with protesters (the druming at the end is direct samples of protests). their Helicopter sing is the police approach towards manifesters. We drift like worried fire tells the story the prosters splitting and being chased down. The Student prostet of 2012 was called "Printemps Erable" (Maple Spring) wich explains the name of the final track as it is the atermath of the protest, something unsure, unclear but as a moment when we saw the power as it's really is: greedy, and Strungs like Lights at Thee Printemps Erable want to aknowledge a nation getting to see wath his governement is up to. Hope that helps on the themes.

To be a GY!BE fan and being in CEGEP during Printemps Érable, it was just musically surreal to see everything unfold. I've never been more hyped to hear samples of people banging on kitchen pots, not a lot of musicians can vehiculate their political opinions so eloquently without words.

I don't understand why Yanqui UXO didn't receive good reviews. It's probably the GYBE album I've actually listened to the most. It's not as tense or ominous as their earlier releases but I enjoy the transitions between apocalyptic despair and celebratory bliss. Some of it is almost something you could dance too.

These two bands, although are both labelled "post-rock" and both play long instrumental music pieces, really don't have the same melodic approach. Godspeed are more experimental, "noisy" and "symphonic" than Explosions in the Sky. Although I also like EITS (particularly on their 2nd and 3rd album), I wouldn't choose them as a good comparison with GY!BE, I would rather advise A Silver Mount Zion or Do Make Say Think.

I felt like this album did not have the same crescendo-like qualities to it, but it was more consistent and sustained with the highs. Still, having listened to Lift Yr Skinny Fists again yesterday in anticipation for my listen through this one, the highs are not as high and the lows are not as low in my opinion. I didn't see you express anything like this, or I missed it. Still, great review as always man.

I like the album a lot, but I'll just mention my gripes with it and that it didn't have as much variations of instruments (or even styles) as Lift... and FA Infinity, as well as not as many musique concrete interludes, so it kinda lacks a cinematic quality. It's basically just a post-rock album, but a friggen good one at least.

Question time!: The grades. I think your reviews are brilliant and you really express your thought clearly enough not to need the number, and sometimes, I really think you shoudn't put a grade at all. But I do understand that it maybe useful for an user that is just going for this and doesn't have time to listen to the whole thing (and get the album, somewhat, spoiled). It also attracts the people. What are your thoughts on that?

I haven't seen a review for the band Astra so you should totally review their latest album The Black Chord. They're a prog/psychedelic/space rock bunch and their music is very reminiscent of the 60s/70s from those respective genres (in a good way!) while having their own unique spin. Also mellotron.

Saw them about a month ago. Went in hoping for something beautiful and melodic, and left feeling like I'd been assaulted with little more than feedback and noise for a good 90 minutes. There were SPOTS of beauty, but after about 45 minutes of the loudest feedback/drone I'd ever heard in a live setting, I'd had enough. That experience has really kinda soured me. Gonna give this a listen eventually, but for now, I'll be huddled in the corner, shivering and clutching 'tiny fists' to my chest.

Grischa Lichtenberger - and.IV [inertia], this album is like a reincarnation of schizophrenic Autechre with Raster Noton flourishes. Dark spaces between instrumentation and heavily manipulated field recordings make this full of interesting textures. Children of the Night - Queens...Revisited, one of the best hip hop releases of the year. Solid production and lyricism.

Hey Anthony, I only saw this review now but I think you got the track sequence incorrect here as you described the first track as not having 'a gripping vocal sample' - 153 seconds into the video. "Mladic" is the first track on this album and it indeed starts off with a clear vocal track ("With his arms outstretched... Did you get her, did you see her? Shoot!"). I think you may have listened to this album in reverse with 'We drift like worried fire' being the actual second track on the LP. Bye!

For the story, this album was (partly) recorded in the midst of the 5-month student strike of 2012, the biggest in Quebec history after the government announced a raise in tuition fees. This event is referenced a few times on the album : the sample at the end of Mladic comes from the marches of protesters knocking on cooking pot (the unofficial symbol of the strike); in the title of the last piece, "Printemps Erable" was the name of this strike, it translates to "Maple Spring" and parallels the Arab Spring of 2011 (only in title of course, because the goal was totally different)

I hate the sudden closes, it takes away from the build up, but I like this band

I think this album is pretty impressive for the amount of time Godspeed has taken of. I'd give it just the same score as you. I was a little less impressed with some of the melodies, but overall this release has reminded me of the kind of post-rock I can really enjoy.

I think I can't complain. Yanqui U.X.O., IMO, was a brilliant statement. Slow riot really does the trick like nothing else I've ever listened to in my life. This album is a welcomed return, and a logical reintroduction to the sound they perfected.

if you were wondering what made GYBE go out of their cave, as a Montreal fan of them, it's obvious to me: watch?v=41YC0ASnfv4 events like this were happening 3-4 times a week for 5 months in Montreal and all over the province. to me this album has such a context, it translates the drive, the will, the anger of last spring. it just blends perfectly with my memories, this is probably woke up these tracks and gave them a purpose
