That's awesome, glad he found a positive outlet and all worked out. Happened to me a teeny bit like that when I was a kid (mid to late teens, in the 80s, parents were having problems with work and their marriage, yadda yadda, there were kids going through way worse, I'm sure, and I was only child. Long story short, as weird as it seems I discovered punk rock, (going to shows and later played in a band) and a very unique community, while rough and tumble around the edges, and reveled in pushing back towards what society wanted, they were a great group of people with giant hearts. The whole bad A$$ punker was more of wall, once in, they were very diverse welcoming crowd, It was the first time in my life, other than school soccer as a kid, that I felt I belonged, I mean it was scary how I knew immediately, like finding your old ball mitt and still fits perfectly.

Godsmack definitely is a hard band, but funnily enough, I got introduced to them by listening to their album The Other Side, which is all acoustic versions of their songs. Saw them in concert at a smallish venue, and after the concert, they passed around the microphone to allow audience members the opportunity to ask them questions. It was a whole vibe. I have a lot of respect for this group.

Sully was actually a drummer before he moved to singing for Godsmack and put the amazing Shannon Larkin in the drummer seat. (Shannon is downright insane on the drums and when he really lays it down, he feels it in his whole body and gets to flailin' around like a next-level human version of Animal.) XD There is SO much awesome music down the Godsmack rabbit hole. Been watching y'all for a while and LOVE the reactions - this one was definitely special and warmed my heart. Knowing how you LOVE a solid drum beat, you have GOT to check out the live drum battle video that pits Sully against Shannon. It's epic. Others not to be missed - "I Stand Alone" and "Serenity." You discovered a FANTASTIC band today!!! Squeee!!!

This is godsmack's 7th album and a turn from heavy metal to hard Rock I'll describe the sound as "shedding some of the bitterness, anger, and creeping darkness...what's left is a band that remains hungry and driven by hope" and the album showed the band as "reinvigorated, confident, and no less defiant than they were in 1998's. Debut album Godsmack it's a slight shift, but a highly enjoyable one that stirs the soul in unexpected ways."

I have 4 sons and my 2nd son before he was 2 would grab his dad's racquetball racket and play it like was a guitar. He didn't know what a guitar was at this point. We got him into guitar lessons when he was little and the rest of the boys as they showed interest. On his last day of grade school his teacher arranged to have him and his brothers' band play a concert there. His younger brother was in 4th grade and could barely be seen behind the drums and his older brother and the other 2 band members came from Jr high to play. I appreciated the teachers and the staff for allowing a hard rock show. Over the years music had been a large portion of lives. Do many concerts; theirs and numerous other artists, watching them performing in musicals and attending many Broadway touring shows as well. It really enriched our lives. They quit playing shows a few years back but they still play the drums and guitar. It's fun now to watch them share their love of music and performing to my granddaughter and her 2 baby brothers. She's 13 and has a guitar and attends concerts with her parents and uncles. The uncle that started it all is even having one of his original guitars refurbished to give to her this year for Christmas and my son has brought his drum set home from the studio rental space they had and is planning on teaching his sons. The older set not his performance set lol.

Voodoo by Godsmack is definitely my favorite. You have to hear that one. Also, heavy metal artists seem to have a reputation of being hard asses and stuff but I’ve been a metal fan my whole life and you will never find more kind genuine WONDERFUL people in any other genre! Most of these bands make songs with positive messages but because the style of music they play people automatically assume they’re evil or bad.

  • @theoneandonlyCatseye

I love "Voodoo"! It's such a cool song. It's really sad how people make so many assumptions about heavy metal genres. Even the stuff with dark imagery in metal, isn't what people assume it is. Dark imagery is usually used as a metaphor for deep subjects. Many metal genres can be shocking to people, but that's the point. They are supposed to be. Also, a lot of people don't get that some artists that are very dark are playing characters. They make art. Listening to the scarier stuff isn't any different than reading a horror novel or poem, or watching a film. A lot of time people only look at things at the surface level and just turn away from dark subject matter assuming that any people who make or listen to such music must be "evil". It doesn't help that the "satanic panic" of the late '80's and early '90's altered attitudes and promoted the idea that these types of genres are evil and that the only people that listen to them are deviants and dangerous criminals. A lot of people were falsely incarcerated for crimes because the type of music they listened to was used as evidence of their character. Such a shame people can't open their minds more. The angry stuff is also just as legitimate, because life is full of all emotions and they are all important to explore.

@@theoneandonlyCatseye Very well said! I totally agree. And not to mention people like Jonathan Davis for instance, he sings about real life trauma he’s gone through which is why people like me connected with him so much. Life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. So music shouldn’t be either. It’s unfortunate that some people see this style of music as evil. I raised my kids on this type of music even though I personally was only raised on Christian and country music until I reached junior high and found other styles. Lol

@@HealthyDisrespectforAuthority You are probably correct and it has always puzzled me. Why did the money go? I live in a small community, approximately 10,000 people. We still have Band, Shop, Foreign Language and the grade school kids have recess. You would think that a school system that size would have to cut programs left and right just to pay the bills. Yet it is the very small, around 350-500 people communities, that are the ones cutting and consolidating, at least here. Why are schools in larger communities suffering so?

Having been a musician for over 50 years, I consider playing/singing/performing music to be one of the greatest blessings of my life. I think music is one of the most powerful forces in the world; even animals connect with music being played to them. My sister retired from teaching music a few years ago and I'm pretty sure she feels the same way. I try to give back what music has given me. In two weeks, a couple good friends and I are putting on a benefit to raise money for Toys For Tots before Christmas. It will be 3 hours of acoustic guitar/vocals and I can't wait to bring joy to friends, family and strangers while at the same time raising money for kid's Christmas toys!

Godsmack has been my #1 since their first album. They are heavily influenced by Alice In Chains, and their name comes from an AIC song. For some more traditional Godsmack, try “Speak” or “1000 Horsepower”

AIC has a song called Godsmack, but that is not where the band got their name. One of the band members had a cold sore and Sully was teasing him unmercifully all day. The next day Sully showed up with a cold sore of his own and they told him he got Godsmacked. That's the story that Sully told last year on one of his live streams.

They are amazing together. I would also recommend the Foo Fighters performing Everlong live with Nandi Bushell (4k version). Nandi is an 11 year old drummer from the UK famous for KZread clips who had a virtual drum off with Foo Fighters Dave Grohl.

To “outsiders” looking in, heavy metal/hard rock and similar genres give off an evil vibe. People hear the noise, the album artwork and all the hype and believe it. Sometimes heavy metal bands remind of the WWE. The characters, the back story, the loudness, everything to portray a certain “bad” person. People know the WWE is a show, but they think it’s factual when a band does something. In reality, metal and hard rock bands and their fans are some of THE most caring people that you’d ever meet.

It's theater, and it's an art form. Art that paints with distorted guitars and emphatic rhythms portraying a message as affecting as any form, and I would argue more because it tends to unlocks deeper more primitive emotions

Great comparison. When I saw Metallica, there was a part in the show where James interacted with the crowd from the stage. He noticed kids in the audience and asked how old some of them were and dedicated one of the songs, I forget which one, to the youth.

To be honest, this music is not something I typically listen to, however, everything else about this video has touched my heart like almost nothing else I've seen in a music video. Seeing these young people react and respond to a language so universal, fills me with so much hope for the future. As you said Amber, I have never personally done anything musically (nor will I ever), but music has been a huge part of my life, almost since I was born. I got my appreciation of nearly every musical genre from my dear mother. Since I was born in the early 50's, I've had the good fortune of living through many eras of music, from before and after entering this world. It has been there for me during good times and the most difficult times of my life. Without it, I can honestly say I'm not certain I'd still be here today. Finding your channel at the time I did has also been such a blessing. You have both been a joy to watch and listen to. It's such a delight watching your faces light up when you hear the music and artists that so many of us have known and loved throughout the decades. SO much of the older music/singers you are reacting to have stood the test of time, and thanks to people like you, Amber and Jay, we know that new generations will continue to keep it alive and share for years and years to come. Thank you both for your love of music !

Godsmack has always been one of my favorite bands. Not only do they have many great songs, but these very songs touch the lives of so many people. This is a testament to, not only are they great musicians/songwriters {Sully Erna in particular}, but also great human beings. If you haven't seen it yet, you really need to watch their song "Under Your Scars"
